Details for Nintendo's Download Update in North America have been announced, and as is now tradition the company has provided a teaser of titles coming soon. This week's reveals are arguably the best yet of these previews.
We have two iconic Castlevania titles coming to the Wii U Virtual Console in the next two weeks, both of which will be making their VC début; details are below.
- Castlevania: Dracula X — 2nd October
- Castlevania: Circle of the Moon — 9th October
Dracula X — known as Akumajou Dracula XX in Japan and Castlevania: Vampire's Kiss in Europe — is a SNES port of PC Engine release Castlevania: Rondo of Blood. Circle of the Moon was the first of a trilogy of titles on the Game Boy Advance, which was then followed up by a DS trilogy. We imagine a subsequent release of the other two GBA titles — at least — would keep Castlevania fans very happy.
So, are you excited about either of these releases? Let us know in the comments below.

Ooh, hope these come to Europe soon, along with the other GBA games.
Buying both of these, when they reach european shores
Schweet! Rondo of Blood is pretty much the best Castlevania! About time we got it on WiiU (sadly not the PCE version).
So what about EU!?!
Circle of the moon for me. I seem to have misplaced my physical and I have been wanting to play it for a while now.
Good news. I'm interested in both.
where the hell is the gamecube VC?
@liljmoore My guess is they're not coming.
Instant download
Sounds like they're prepping for Halloween. What other sort of Halloween-ish VC games you think should come?
This is good, but why Dracula X and not Rondo of Blood? RoB is the superior version, by far, and it's on the Wii Shop Channel . . .
New VC games! Excellent!
I definitely miss my Turbo-Grafx 16 games on the Wii U VC. This reminds me to go buy Lords of Thunder before it goes away. Man, that'll be sad when a majority of the Wii Shop games are no longer available...
But yay to GBA 'Vania games! Really enjoy the GamePad as a housebound portable.
If only they would put up Genesis games on the Wii U eshop. Then we could finally get Bloodlines....
I know I'm in the minority, but Bloodlines is my top 16-bit Castlevania.
CIRCLE OF THE MOON, baby! Dacula X feels like playing the consolation prize after being spoiled by Rondo Of Blood, so I'll probably skip it.
Sweet, I will get both.
@cbkummer: Because the Wii U doesn't have TG-16 games, yet anyway.
@LittleIrves you know you can transfer old wii vc games to wii u? Maybe not gamepad use, but still. I have almost 200 wiiware/vc games to go with my about 50 eshop wii u games.
I dont like circle of moon. Very dark and small sprites. Space jump..eerrrgh
Cool!
So excited for Circle of the Moon. My first Castlevania game. Here's to hoping for the other 2 GBA classics as well as Metroid: Zero Mission.
yay finally some more classic Castlevania Now give us the rest of the GBA and DS titles. Where is DS VC btw? We only got Brain Training so far...
I'll get both!
Buying both of course. They're both amazing... ESPECIALLY Dracula X!
@vonseux Look at it this way: Bigger screen.
DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME WITH DRACULA X, JUST GET THE PROPER COPY ON THE WII VIRTUAL CONSOLE!!! The Turbo Duo/PC Engine version is far superior!!!
@LittleIrves Lords of Thunder is so good!
I have the PC Engine version on the Wii VC, Japan already has PCE on Wii U VC, so I assume the west will eventually get it
Wonder when DS titles would be released, Aria of Sorrow was rated for Wii U VC
I haven't played Castlevania in a while. Time to change that...
I get tired of people saying Dracula X is Rondo port. I've spent countless hours over the last 20 years playing both games, and yes they basically tell the same story, but are far from being the same game.
The word “iconic” is thrown around so much…
Are we ever going to get Belmont's Revenge on 3DS Virtual Console?
Noo! I still have the trilogy of NES Castlevanias on my backlog! I need to hurry up and finish Mega Man 6 and start Castlevania I
I really hope we get Aria of Sorrow. It's the best on GBA. Then move on with DS castlevania titles. They are the best !
Two of my favourites. Even though they're unpopular, I really love both of these!
Also, to everyone who says that the SNEs Vampire's Kiss / Dracula XX is not worth it because Rondo of Blood exists....... why not play both? They're so different to each other they really should be considered separate games. ....it's like saying you don't want to play Kirby's Dreamland 3 because Kirby 64 exists.... like, why not both, for serious?
Yes yes yes amazing :~)
@BensonUii I could say the same regarding North America and the Pokemon Trading Card game.
They really need to get these games on 3DS. I know the Wii-U needs the sales more but games like Circle of the Moon should be on both. It's the only one I never played on GBA.
@cbkummer Because Konami has yet to give us TG/PC Engine games. Japan has them on their Wii U VC, so hopefully it's only a matter of time...
I just finished Circle of the Moon for the first time a few months ago. I loved it.
I had the PC Engine version of Rondo of Blood on the Wii Virtual Console. It was really good. The music was fantastic.
Circle of the Moon!? Classic Now I get to do some beastly transforms once more!
Yay to both, but still want rondo to make the collection complete. Hell I would buy the N64 games (which I quite like) I just love castlevania a bit too much.
@Discostew Zombies (ate my neighbours) would be perfect for Halloween. I have it on my Wii VC, but would upgrade anyway.
@Caryslan I like Bloodlines better than the SNES ones. Rondo is 8 bit. (I prefer X68000 though (16 bit) but only have the PS1 version that isn't as good).
Circle of the Moon was my first Castlevania. I ended up with it sort of by accident but sure am glad that I did.
£250 for a Wii u to play old retro games on seems expensive. Why not dig out all the old Wii's and Nintendo let us play these games on the Wii.
@vonseux
Neither of those will be a problem playing it on a TV, or even a GamePad for that matter.
Never played those two. Is either better or on par with Symphony of the Night?
Better download Rondo of Blood of Turbografx in Wii Mode. I have it years ago and is perfect.
PCE games are in Japan on WiiU...I keep hoping that means that TG-16 games will make their way to the US.
...maybe it's only a dream, but it's a good dream .
Should've been Bloodlines instead of Dracula X.
Oh. I didn't know the Genesis is being supported. I was under the impression that no Genesis games were coming any time soon.
you know, ive been here for almost what, 5 years? when i say a game is coming to vc i know what im talking about. when someone askes me: "source?" im telling you i AM the source. thats all im able to say about that subject.
https://www.nintendolife.com/forums/wii_u_virtual_console/castlevania_dracula_x?start=20#reply-27
once again, "i told you"
Hmm a GBA Castlevania game might just be what it takes to get me into the series!
Whoa! Awesome! I'll probably purchase both of these games. I love Dracula X!
I could see myself buying a GBA Castlevania game. I've always been interested in games with darker themes and monsters of the night.
@Steamboat_Willie
im going to answer yer question with a question.
i never really ask questions so that gives me time to give answers.
everyone on here has so many questions that they dont take the time to help anyone else out because they have 30 of them they need answers to themselves. who are the two biggest companies that have basically been going back to back fighting for customers on virtual console releases for a long time now? these two companies both have sought after games that are costly to some folks to get on ebay. both of these companies know this, and are aware of each others downloads. you tell me how much longer you think its going to be until demons crest arrives, dont answer that question for me because i know that answer already. as much as people like to analyze things on here, yet no one can come up with any answers. i shall stimulate yer brain!
Already own circle of the moon. I'm definetly getting dracula x. One reason the cart is $200 alone. Then when I finish it will buy rondo of blood so I can witness the difference.
@Caryslan Bloodlines is my favorite 16 bit Castlevania as well. I really wish Genesis games were on Wii U VC! As for the two games announced, I will be getting both Dracula X and Circle of the Moon.
YES buying BOTH day one
In my honest opinion, Circle of the Moon is by far the superior outing.
Dracula X might as well not have been made by Konami.
The LEAST Castlevania game, with wooden animation, sparse environments and the most recycled themes and enemies.
Super IV is still the best ever made.
And yes, I include Symphony of the Night (highly overrated, in my opinion).
Circle of the Moon is great stuff, glad that's coming.
So, hopefully this forbodes a Belmont as Smash dlc?
@liljmoore I'm sure they'll get it out after they finally release N64 and DS games on VC. They promised N64 games way back in January 2013... So I expect GCN titles to hit WiiU VC sometime in 2017.
When will they come to scotland , also where is snes shadowrun get that on wii u.
Circle of the Moon! Yes! Finally a replacement for my old cart that doesn't have working saves anymore.
Hopefully:
10/16 Harmony of Dissonance
10/23 Aria of Sorrow
10/30 Castlevania Legends
@liljmoore probably in the same place they were when the Wii U launched... Not in development.
@Discostew Like @Steamboat_Willie mentioned above, Demon's Crest could be coming. Capcom announced it already, we just don't know when, but it would indeed make a good release for Halloween, or close to it anyway.
@ogo79 nice, now when can we expect Mother 3 for the eshop
Never played any GBA Castlevania games so very excited about this. Don't know whether to double-dip with Dracula X or not...already have Rondo of Blood for PCE...
Definitely getting Dracula X. I have Circle of the Moon on GBA, but I might cave and play it on a big screen. It's one of the greatest Castlevanias. In my top 3. I really wish they would release at least one of the N64 Vanias. I have no means to play them!
Dracula X is different to Rondo of Blood. No double dipping involved.
And it will be good to play Circle of the Moon on a large screen that is backlit. It was hard to see on the very first GBA.
Played all those... I'm good, but GREAT for anyone that hasn't played those already
