In last week's Media Create chart results for Japan, Yokai Watch stormed the charts with 1.3 million sales. A combination of the growing popularity of Level-5's franchise and the decision to release two versions helped it surpass the lifetime sales of its predecessor in just one week.
As expected, Yokai Watch 2 remains comfortably on top in its second week, surging past one and a half million retail sales. New titles on 3DS, Vita and PS3 take up the next three places, while Mario Kart 8 plugs away in fifth place with nearly 15,000 more sales. The top 20 is below with lifetime sales in brackets.
1. [3DS] Yokai Watch 2: Ganso / Honke – 331,946 (1,648,653)
2. [PSV] Oreshika: Tainted Bloodblines – 93,775 (New)
3. [PS3] Atelier Shallie: Alchemists of the Dusk Sea – 43,744 (New)
4. [3DS] Gundam Try Age SP – 21,524 (New)
5. [Wii U] Mario Kart 8 – 14,992 (542,358)
6. [3DS] Yokai Watch – 12,790 (1,208,077)
7. [PSV] Freedom Wars – 9,761 (262,427)
8. [3DS] Taiko Drum Master: Don and Katsu’s Space-Time Great Adventure – 9,258 (101,478)
9. [3DS] Pokemon Art Academy – 5,714 (69,636)
10. [PS3] Watch Dogs – 5,628 (59,585)
11. [PS3] Grand Theft Auto V Low Price Version – 5,090 (23,659)
12. [3DS] Pokemon X / Y – 4,925 (4,106,912)
13. [PS4] Murdered: Soul Suspect – 4,467 (New)
14. [PS4] FIFA 14 – 4,094 (67,541)
15. [3DS] Monster Hunter 4 – 3,905 (3,311,605)
16. [PS4] Watch Dogs – 3,455 (85,832)
17. [3DS] Happe-chan Minna de Odekake! Wakuwaku Hoppe Land!! – 3,433 (New)
18. [3DS] Pro Evolution Soccer 2014: Aoki Samurai no Chousen – 2,996 (70,108)
19. [PSV] Persona 4 Golden – 2,929 (304,785)
20. [Wii U] Wii Sports Club – 2,898 (New)
Hardware results see all platforms — oddly with the exception of the Vita TV — drop sales. The 3DS LL / XL had a major dip after its Yokai Watch 2 launch boost, while another fresh release on Vita can't prevent it from dropping down and staying behind Nintendo's portable. The Wii U remains the top selling console, but nevertheless with disappointing sales figures; the results are below with last week's sales in brackets.
3DS LL – 31,192 (55,531)
PlayStation Vita – 27,352 (38,907)
Wii U – 8,209 (8,658)
PlayStation 3 – 7,389 (7,763)
PlayStation 4 – 6,456 (7,150)
3DS – 6,185 (6,425)
PlayStation Vita TV – 2,249 (1,803)
PSP – 556 (779)
Xbox 360 – 129 (140)
Another week of double lattes all around for the Level 5 team, while the 3DS LL retains its top spot in the hardware charts. As for the Wii U and its home console rivals, the busier release schedule of August / Fall can't come soon enough.

Wow, good job!
All consoles are DOOMMED (in Japan). Yokai Watch is going to get an eshop release in NA at this point, right? You gotta figured they can make a little money porting it over here.
Well, at least the X360 is starting to pick up some steam... **runs away**
Very good 3DS and Vita numbers!
The Wii U isn't doing THAT bad in Japan. Hyrule Warriors, Fatal Frame U, and others haven't even released yet.
HW should give Wii U a boost. Of course Destiny will be giving the other 2 new consoles a boost as well. Well only 1 in Japan.
@Blast
It's doing slightly better than the PS4 (which has no games yet) but the Wii-U should be doing A LOT better since it has the better software lineup and is coming off the release of MK8
Perhaps Nintendo should consider getting Level 5 to do a Yokai Watch on Wii U and/or a Yokai Watch Edition 3DS?
Summertime sales are always low because not too many games come out around this time. The 3 biggest times of the year are Holiday Season, February/March, and late Spring.
Come on Nintendo.....where's Metroid for 3DS????? heck where's Advance Wars?????? That can boost sales a lot!!!!!!!
Isn't MH4G coming out next sales week? Isn't that worth a mention considering it'll top the charts by a million.
Can someone explain to me what yokai watch is and how there is already a sequel to it when the first game is still in the top 10? I feel like I am so out of the loop.
"Grand Theft Auto V Low Price Version"
Well, at least that's descriptive.
Damn yokai watch 2 is freaking unstoppable.
I get the feeling that only when I cave in and download Yokai Watch will an international release be announced. I'm betting, like, the next day
The 3DS is beating everyhing to death, and the Vita is doing pretty good too. The home consoles can't even be consistently above 10,000 units a week. It is a sad sight, and it makes me wonder how the Xbox One will do over in Japan.
@eaglebob345 I would be shocked if Microsoft even bothers with the Xbox One in Japan. The Xbox and the 360 both flopped in Japan, and there is no intrest in the Xbox brand over there.
Given the poor sales of home consoles in Japan, Microsoft would be better served selling their consoles in the West and elsewhere. If the PS4 and Wii U are struggling to make an impact, then the Xbox One will be DOA in that market.
Yokai Watch 2 could be the first game to sell 2 million units this year in Japan. Which, if you think about it in relation to YW, is crazy. If the first game had done such huge numbers, it wouldn't be that impressive. But YW2 has opened doors for Level-5 to turn the series into the next Pokemon / MH.
Not every year something like that comes along, that's for sure.
@Caryslan Yeah, I know they shouldn't even bother, but I believe it launches in Japan this year, though I could be wrong.
