The most recent Japanese Media Create game charts were revealed on Christmas Day, and will have certainly brought festive cheer to Nintendo HQ. In the last full shopping week before the big day there were major successes for the company in terms of both hardware and software, with the 3DS dominant and the Wii U maintaining its strong run.
To begin with software, GungHo Online Entertainment's 3DS title Puzzle & Dragons Z maintains its number one position with a further 256,373 units, yet more sales of the portable's iteration to add to the title's phenomenal smartphone success. Pokémon X & Y follows in second place with impressive numbers, while the top 20 as a whole is dominated by 3DS software. There are a couple of Wii U positives, with Super Mario 3D World moving another 86,408 copies to come in fifth, while Wii Party U sneaks into the top 20; the results are below, with lifetime sales (physical retail only) in parenthesis.

20. [Wii U] Wii Party U (Nintendo, 10/31/13) – 23,972 (119,100)
In terms of hardware it's another excellent week for Nintendo. As would be expected from the software charts, the 3DS (both LL / XL and standard models) have seen impressive increases to be the dominant force once more. Perhaps more encouraging is the continuing growth in Wii U sales, with another notable leap seeing its weekly sales go into six figures — most likely for the first time since its launch over 12 months ago. More importantly it's the fourth consecutive week of upward momentum, boosting the userbase and — Nintendo will surely hope — further improving word-of-mouth and perceptions around the system
Results are below, with last week's sales in parenthesis.
3DS LL – 164,078 (130,710)
Wii U – 109,113 (74,903)
3DS – 68,522 (50,846)
PlayStation Vita – 50,087 (30,440)
PlayStation 3 – 24,573 (23,959)
PSP – 9,905 (6,475)
PlayStation Vita TV – 5,504 (5,506)
Wii – 1,711 (1,197)
Xbox 360 – 763 (536)
Those are just the results that Nintendo needed, also showing that Wii U bundles and value are leading to increased sales along with new releases over the past month; whether the numbers will help the system to its targets, we'll see, but they're showing positive trends. The 3DS, meanwhile, continues to set impressive standards in the Land of the Rising Sun.

Rather impressive for a company that's doomed. They're still doomed because, um, because, almighty genius Pachter has predicted it!
Gd news! Its lucky the rival consoles are not out yet, nintendo really needed this
About time this has showed up. Good for you Nintendo.
I can predict that the 10,000 Xbox 360 owners in Japan definitely won't be looking to upgrade to a Xbone anytime soon
This is really good hope it continues, made my day, I love my Wii U regardless but the more jumping in the better for us all I hope
Sorry for the question but why are the sales for ps4 and xbone excluded?
@Reynoldszahl
They aren't out in Japan yet.
@DarkToonLink Ahhhhhh Pachter..... one on the many people on the face of the Earth that should be obliterated.
@cookiex
thanks
Impressive sales bump for Wii U.
Mario is still going strong.
Go get that 1 million Luigi!
3DS:
I thought WIi U sales were meant to go down after last week...
So Nintendo basically beat it's November numbers in Japan alone? That's good. They still won't hit that 9 mil in march.
@DarkToonLink Don't ..mention that name
@readypembroke Yep.
@Goginho Sorry!
But but but the Wii U is the Dreamcast. The trolls told me so.
The Wii U is doomed because... reasons or something.
If the sales maintain this or even go up next week, then that starts to look like solid momentum....I know Christmas is celebrated by some in Japan, so it could just be the few people who do celebrate it over there. We will find out as the upcoming weeks tell all.
I'm really hopeful bringing Miiverse to 3DS will at least bring Wii U to the attention of that huge potential userbase. A great move
So, what we can say about it...? It started!! Lets the WAR begins!! Jajaja, no kidding now; just guessing that those are the numbers the Wii U must keep coming thru 2014!! And it seems by the software expected to come, it can be! Hopefully overseas the Wii U will shows similar or bigger numbers!
Good one Nintendo!!
The Wii moved 1711 units? How is that thing still selling?
The 3DS dominance is like a bowl of soup... warm, comforting, letting you know everything is going to be alright.
We all know the PS4 will sell very well in Japan upon release, but I'm curious as to how the Xbone will do. Will the western media crush it like it has Nintendo? or will its NA/Euro sales give it a pass and barely a word is said?
I wish we got software like Japan does here in NA.
YAY!
Awesome. Cannot wait to see the holiday sales numbers for the US, and what I predict will be a very strong showing for Nintendo.
This is better news. If they get similar sales in the other two main regions for this period, they'll stand a chance of keeping their slender lead in worldwide sales til the bombs drop in Spring. The best part is that Nintendo will start supporting it properly now that it is growing in Japan. There was stage where I thought Nintendo would only give us a few rush job games to keep us happy til the next console.
I don't know what the Sony zealot, EA apologist, Nintendo-hating, mainstream gaming media are going to say if Wii U keeps selling but I am sure they'll just keep putting pointless troll pieces on.
hope it is the same all over... i need some more support for the wii u:D
Let me put this into perspective: the Wii U is about to outsell the 360 in Japan. That means the 360 is terrible
@ajcismo They will make an infinite number of excuses for any console but Nintendo but most of the main sites are so heavily biased towards Sony that it won't be long before they start trying to kill the Xbox. I've seen both consoles in stock every time I have been to my local shops but it is noticeable from the posters that PS4 is "back in stock" and Xbox1 is "in store now".
One friend of mine has an Xbox One, and another has a PS4. The Xbox One has the worst menu system ever, and the Kinect is worse than ever, because you need to use it if you don't want to spend 5 minutes trying to start a game. The PS4 seems to he pretty good, and Need For Speed Rivals on PS4 looks better than Dead Rising 3 on Xbox One, but probably because DR3 was initially going to be for 360 and Rivals has a PC version to get high quality graphics from.
Japan is the place where the ds got a good run going and never looked back. if the wii u can pick up steam in japan and then create a good run over here in north america then the wii u will be in good shape. people are very hard on nintendo but if your hardware is selling no matter where then its a good thing. lets hope the wii u can get that same success here in the u.s.
@DarkwingLz I thought it already passed the 360 there many months ago
Yeah Nintendo for life
@element187 Haha nice one.
Let's hope it keeps up.
@DarkToonLink
Lol Pachter is the biggest douche ever.
Numbers versus last year should be added to this weekly report, b/c they are meaningful.
3DS is down quite a lot over last year and is looking to finish ~700K lower in sale this year than last despite Pokemon and Monster Hunter 4. I'm concerned for the future : (.
@cyrus_zuo I don't think you need to worry about the 3DS. Worldwide sales are right around 40 million and in Japan alone 14 million plus (!!!!!!) have been sold. So I think the 3DS is gonna be in good shape for the future.
YAAAAAY!
How can a company selling more than 200,000 of portable consoles and more than 100,000 home consoles, together with tons of software that costs so much a piece, only in one country, in one week, be doomed. That sounds like the healthiest business in the world.
Nice week for Nintendo!
Is Namco Bandi a second party for Sony or something? Why are most of their titles PS3 exclusive???
@dumedum because people will hate on a succesful business
From what I've been told, next week is the key week in Japan. New Year's day is when the "festive" sales really begin as that's when all the kids get their money to spend. To me that makes this even more impressive. 3DS sales are just insanity. They're getting multiple devices per person with all those cool bundles and color choices. That has to be the case, right? It's nuts.
@DarkToonLink-Pretty funny-bet Patcher might be losing sleep over his doomed reputation
I got a ps3 for chistmas. Now there is nothing stopping me from getting a wii u when I have the money!
@Yorumi: I do realize that of course there is limit to how many people would purchase a system. I also realize that the 3DS is on a slower selling trajectory in Japan than the DS was. Clearly there are more people who could buy a 3DS, but they are not buying it.
I also realize the Software sales trajectory for the 3DS is MUCH less than it was for the DS. I worry about the long-term success of Nintendo, b/c I love what they do. I recognize that due to the software released this year the sales results should be MUCH better and I worry what happens next year when Nintendo doesn't have the 2 biggest brands in Japan releasing for its platform.
Wow, Japan REALLY likes dragons and puzzle games, haha. This is really awesome, Wii U desserve it. Hope the post-holiday sales don't go down pretty dramatically and it can stay in decent numbers until DKCTF and from there, all is gun' be good with Mario Kart 8 and beyond.
YEAHHHHH!!!
BUT I THOUGHT WII U WAS DOOMED BECAUSE MARKETING "EXPERTS" NOTICED A TREND OF LOW INITIAL SALES AND INTERPRETED IT AS DEFINITIVE FACT THAT WOULD GOVERN THE WII U'S ENTIRE LIFECYCLE, AND BECAUSE THE FLAWED IDEOLOGY CALLED TECHNOLOGICAL DETERMINISM DICTATES THAT ONLY SPECS MATTER.
Necessary caps.
YAY!!!!!!!!
Is Japan the 2nd largest territory for the gaming industry? Next to the U.S.
My inner negativity won't stop nagging me that this is Japan, sales will still continue to be modest to crap in the US =( Though my optimistic side hopes I'm wrong...
Many people I know got a Wii U recently, or are looking into getting one.
Let's hope Wii U gets that 3DS-like boost it deserves! And the quality first- and original third-party exclusives support like Wii, DS and 3DS got! These are my 2 favourite systems ever, nostalgia aside.
@Zhenya They surely aren't a second party to Sony, seeing as they've released a couple games on Nintendo consoles recently (Tekken) and they've been neck-deep in Super Smash Bros development with Sakurai. They are just releasing a lot for Sony because it's the dominant console at the moment.
@Jayvir
Adding to that, most of the NB games in that top 20 are licensed games.
@cyrus_zuo Comparing the DS and 3DS is pointless. Of course the 3DS is selling slower than the DS, considering the target audience for each system. The DS was a hyper-casual system, so many casuals bought it like they did the Wii, and aren't returning. The 3DS on the other hand is a system primarily targeted at core, dedicated gamers like the GBA (also hits a slightly older audience that the GBA didn't really hit). With that target audience, the 3DS sales are extremely impressive.
@cookiex Man I love that GIF.
Anyway, I just hope the upward trend continues. Judging by the network issues yesterday(I couldn't buy my Fire Emblem DLC ) The story might be similar in the US. Hopefully.
@LUIGITORNADO they might already have. Sony and Microsoft are spending a lot of money to blast them we won't have real numbers until February
@IxnayontheCK
I'm thinking that they've done pretty well in North America too, going by the Nintendo Network crashing due to the increased traffic. It was also interesting that when my son went to buy a Wii U it was sold out in a lot of stores, all they had was PS3s and PS4s in stock. That could be because they carried fewer Wii Us to begin with, but either way it looks quite positive.
Let's see who reports on this though. 4 weeks running and I haven't seen one article except for Nintendo fansites. Oh, they were REAL QUICK to post the negative numbers, but the minute Wii U starts leading the pack, they suddenly stop caring about reporting Wii U sales.
Anyone in this very site knew that the 3DS models would have no issue selling in any part of the world whatsoever. :B
Those Wii U sales, though! YES! The system's finally picked up steam. It'd better keep going that way!
Wow PS Vita TV, I can feel your pain. That is the only new console up there that doesn't seem too successful. Hopefully it ends up like the PSP Go and PSX (not the PS1) so Sony could start focusing on PS Vita and PS4 instead.
Lets hope Sega/Konami/Capcom/Namco Bandai etc. are watching. Could do with some good third-party games.
I hope this means more sales in other places too will go up, I want more Third Party support (exclusives etc), because I'm honestly getting sick of the repetition of Second and First party games. I can only enjoy Zelda, Mario and Pokemon for so long before they start to get stale.
In other news, no WiiU games in the UK Xmas top 40 at all. Best 3ds game at #26 (AC:New Leaf), Wii's Let's dance makes it to #4 though.
But you can't extrapolate from single markets. If the delta between Japan and UK charts is any indication it'll be a train wreck overall, but who knows?
IMO Wii U has nowhere to go but up, the bundles are a deal and on top of that 2014 is what the Wii Us launch should have looked like, Mario Kart, SSB, Donkey Kong, Beyonetta, maybe that Zelda Dynasty Warriors game! The line up looks fantastic and it's going to be hard for people not to have one especially when you have the games that already came out Super Mario 3D World, WWHD, Monster Hunter, New Super Mario Bros U, and Nintendoland! I feel 2014 will see the Wii U pull a 3DS and skyrocket can't wait to see what Ninty has up their sleeves for this years E3
@MadAdam81
Well to be fair to the Xbox1, Dead Rising3 has waaaay more going on than a Need For Speed game ever will. On topic though, good news for the WiiU. Hopefully the trend continues so those that can't afford (or even want) another system can perhaps get more of their needs met in one place. Plus it's an awesome & unique system that deserves to do better.
great this is good news and next year it will go up even more with smash bros, mario kart 8, x, bayonetta 2, it will grow oh yeah hyrule warriors and the new zelda there going to show and maybe metriod if they have sense to make it and show at least a teaser.
Great news! Now all Nintendo needs to do, to make (me) happy, is get Treasure and Platinum Games as 2nd parties or buy them up and let them make the games they make best, and go ham with the Games, just get the best content that takes advantage of everything the Wii U offers!
I bought a Wii U on the word of Bayonetta 2, so I am excited to finally get a copy in my hands. Preordered one since Feb 2013.
Great news! How come vgchartz has nor updated their figures in almost 3 weeks? I really want to know the YTD numbers!!! My guess would be around 5 million.
@Fazermint Not to take away from your sarcasm, but the a*holes you were looking for are business analysts, not marketing experts...
(I'm a sales & marketing specialist myself and we don't do predictions)
No offense, just saying...
@MadAdam81 what a strange comparison to make: a zombie slasher vs a racing game, @gameboy1975 definitely has a point there; more going on on-screen can and sometimes will take away from the graphics. Let's make a more realistic and fairer comparison: Need for Speed Rivals looks just as good on Xbox One as it does on PS4. The menu can also be navigated just fine if you were already used to the not that much different Xbox 360 version, so I don't get the hate for that either.
On topic: good for you Nintendo! Hope this upwards sales line continues on well into the new year and beyond.
And @everyone: hope you had a nice couple of Christmas days, I certainly did.
It seems like WiiU sold what like 300K units it Japan alone in December? The US sales are going to be higher than that so if WiiU actually did over 1 mil for the month worldwide then that is its best month since NOV/DEC of 2012. Remember everyone was selling they will tank hard once ps4/xb1 is launched but even in the face of great sales for those 2 new systems the WiiU is having a great month...................just forget about XB1 in japan....ps4 will do crazy numbers in Feb when it gets released, but two generations of XB have failed hard in Japan and nothing is going to change....It really looks like Nintendo has improved the situation in Jap and USA but are still really struggling to move WiiU's in EU/UK........
I really hope Nintendo sold way more in Europe and the US, because there's no way they're hitting their sales targets if sales aren't astronomically high.
Way to go, Wii U! This is super great because it means Japanese developers will have tangible reason to start putting out more Wii U games.
And of course, 3DS is a beast, but everyone knows that already.
Luigi's Mansion coming for that 1mil, 3DS dominating the software chart, and the top three selling consoles are Nintendo. "Doomed" indeed.
Let's hope the NA numbers look just as promising.
Nice to see Xbox a failure in Japan.
I think you see another boost in momentum once Smash Bros. and MarioKart are released (you have to figure one of the two is going to be the holiday smash hit next year)
the thing about the modern era of gaming is that companies need to accept that lots of people wait a long time to finally buy their console. you can't release mario kart, mario world, zelda, metroid, and monster hunter and pokemon all at launch that would just be a very spiky business plan
The cat suit is also a reason for thousands of sales. I really think at the end of the day the cat suit, if advertised enough by Nintendo, could be responsible for hundreds of thousands of wiiu sales.
I agree - the cat suit is a system seller!
Really pleased about the success of PazudoraZ (Puzzle and Dragons). I am one of those sales as I had it for Christmas. Have been playing it almost solidly since Christmas morning. I LOVE it!
IT'S ALIVE! ALIIIIIIIIIVE!!!!!!!
@JaxonH
so your saying the gaming media just has it out for wii u? lol! really dude?
@URAmk2
Generally speaking, I'm saying exactly that.
Information you might want to read up on:
http://nintendoenthusiast.com/article/why-is-negative-wii-u-news-so-popular/
@URAmk2
Fanboys always think that about their chosen team. Same as supporters of sports teams, political parties, celebrities etc. Fact is, negative news is popular full stop. Look at the avalanche of bad press MS got this year with the XB1 launch or back in the day with RROD. Sony got it with the PSN Hack, Vita, and the PS3 launch etc.
Everyone else being biased is a nice easy excuse.
@electrolite77
IF you want to come out and accuse me of being a fanboy simply for stating the obvious, direct your comment to me please.
As you just stated, even MS has endured ALOT of heat from the press, and they have. And you don't have to be a fanboy to see it. Ok, same for the Wii U. You don't have to be a fanboy to see that negative Wii U articles are popular, and positive Wii U articles are all but a relic nowadays, unless you're on a Nintendo site. Please use a little more thought before insinuating I'm a fanboy, because you really don't have a clue.
Stating the obvious with an article to support the facts does not make one a fanatic. Ridiculing others by thowing insults like "fanboy" around over a rational statement does.
@JaxonH
I wasn't addressing it at you, rather it was a general comment. However, seeing you've taken it extremely personally I checked back and the last time I noticed posts of yours you did in fact come across as fairly zealous in your defence of Nintendo.
On another tip, there was a spate of positive Wii U articles published at the start of the Christmas shopping season in e.g. Edge, Eurogamer, Gizmodo, n4g, TIME etc. Articles about it selling badly are, well, true. The article you linked to is from a Nintendo-orientated site and likely to see it from a very one-sided point-of-view.
@electrolite77
You weren't addressing it to me, no, but seeing as I was addressing that very issue with another member, it came off as talking about me right in front of me (which is what I believe you intended to do). If I proclaimed "Morons always reply to my posts" immediately after you responded to me, you'd take it that I'm calling you a moron. And then I tell you "well that wasn't directed at you, but since you..."
And I've defended Nintendo quite a bit lately. Why? Because there's ALOT of unfair accusations and irrational hate toward the company. When I hear bs, I call it. I hate it when anti-fans just blindly bash Nintendo.
And yes, you're right, there were quite a few positive articles, but most of them were non-gaming sites and. N4G is user submitted. There's always a positive article or two, it just doesn't get any hits (wonder why?) When you're on the receiving end of all the hate, you notice it alot more.
If you'd like to prove me wrong, please link the articles from other non-Nintendo gaming sites reporting on the Wii U's recent 4 week spree on the Japanese charts. I haven't found a single one.
Go Nintendo! The violins of sadness and dissapointment are fading and the triumphant notes of the trumpets of success are now blaring loud and clear!
Take that, Michael Pachter.
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=eFuZHE9kiyc
@aaronsullivan Yeah seriously, I'm actually a huge fan of all these colored 3DS' so many different people have so many different colors or designs. To be honest if I was in Japan I'd be broke, I'd have bought all the Pokemon and One Piece 3DS' xD
Wa! 3DS dominating everything in Japan.
It is natural that Japanese like Nintendo more than PS and especially Xbox. When I had my PS2 all they have are 3D shooting games, 3D adventure games... Asians like games that are interesting and "cute". Mature games do not necessarily appeal to Asian gamers. If you compare movies you will notice that Japan movies are less bloody than in American movies.
Also, Sushi outsold turkey this Xmas in Japan. Yay Sushi World Domination by April 2014. Them turkeys don't stand a chance.
