The Wii U eShop is becoming a haven for indie developers, but it seems that not everyone is keen to join the party. According to Edge Online, Mojang’s Jens Bergensten has said that his company is unlikely to port its indie smash hit Minecraft to the Wii U.
Bergensten said:
Microsoft has an exclusivity deal for consoles. When it runs out we’ll consider Minecraft for PlayStation, but Wii U is very unlikely.
For those of you that don't know, Minecraft is a sandbox game where you can build literally anything out of blocks. It has become something of a sensation on PC, smartphones and Xbox Live Arcade, and has turned its creator Markus "Notch" Persson into an internet celebrity. It has sold over 20 million copies across all formats so far.
We personally think that the Wii U would be the perfect platform for Minecraft, thanks to the touchscreen display on the GamePad. It's a shame that Mojang isn't at least open to the idea of porting the game, but perhaps that will change with time? Maybe Dan Adelman can send them a bunch of flowers, or something?

The problem is that Mojang signed a form stating Microsoft would be the sole provider of Minecraft for consoles. This is one of the reasons I prefer Nintendo over Microsoft.
I used to play Minecraft but I don't really care anymore, especially since I bought it on Xbox a while ago
@hyperstar96
Easy. They don't want to adapt gamepad play into it.
Great.Now Microsoft is the problem.This needs to stop now.
Personally? I would not buy Minecraft on Wii U as I already got my fill with the alpha on PC, but the game lends itself brilliantly to the WIi U with the gamepad, and potentially sharing creations and maps through MiiVerse.
I would love it on the Wii U and it could be one of the main reasons for me to get a Wii U. But from Microsofts standpoint of the contract was a genius move, still being a jerk but genius nonetheless.
What the junk! Minecraft on the Wii U will be perfect. With a little bit of flaws. Also lolz at the picture because it has some chunks not loaded.
Sounds like they just don't like Nintendo or the Wii U or something.
At least, that's how I see it.
I already have it on PC, so I'd most likely pass anyways.
@Hyperstar96
PS3 being far more popular than WiiU may have something to do with it.
A bit of a shame because as far as consoles go, Wii U would be the best fit for the game.
If I really want to play though, I can just do so on my laptop, so no big deal.
I wouldn't but put yes, incase they see just the poll for some reason and for some incredibly bad business move that motivates them to port it.
I don't know what weird reality that would work in but shhhh.
That's too bad, Minecraft would be a perfect fit for Wii U, all inventory management and whatnot could be done on the GamePad. I wonder why it's unlikely...? That was pretty vague.
I wonder if it has been really considered at ALL. It's such an obvious match and it would be a big success on the eShop which is where all the success on the Wii U seems to be lately.
Hopefully, thousands of Wii U fans screaming will change minds.
To be honest, I think Minecraft on consoles is one of the most redundant things ever. The PC version gets updated far more easily, has more features such as more blocks and mechanics, easily modded and has tonnes of fan-made multiplayer modes and expansions. Not to even mention just about every computer made after 2009 can run it. Console versions miss out on just about all of these features, and it confuses me why the Xbox version did so well.
I wouldn't want to release a game on a platform where games aren't tied to accounts either...
@speedyExpertist No, they're lazy douchebags
Oh c'mon, Minecraft would be epic on Wii U. Fast access to inventory and crafting on the gamepad, motion control for tools, and playing it on the gamepad, sort of portable.
@bulby1994 Heck, my 2007 model iMac runs Minecraft perfectly.
Also, it's not like Mojang has millions of dollars in the bank to take some risks with, right?
The Eshop doesn't charge developers to update if I remember correctly. And the main reason I don't care for Minecraft on PC is because it is a headache to control.
If they end up skipping Minecraft on Wii U I will be one sad panda. There is no way that Wii U can't run this games
I wonder if he means the Playstation 4?
The journalist who did the interview should have asked why they would only consider a PS3 version and leave a WiiU version at "unlikely"
Just bad journalism
"Love can't build a bridge?" Well, he said no to a 3DS so it appears there's no love between Mojang and Nintendo. Plus it would cost more to adapt to gamepad, and if they didn't millions of fans would complain. The easy business route is typically the best.
I'd buy it if I could continue my PC saves.
I probably wouldn't buy it on Wii U even if it did come out, seeing how delayed the Xbox version was in terms of getting patches. You could pick up the PC version for around 6$ more and you get mods.
Who plays Minecraft on consoles to begin with ? i mean, the game runs on any PC from the last 10 years, at least ! and its WAY chepear on PC than consoles, not to mention that it gets A LOT more updates and its all about mods
@SkywardLink98 "The easy business route is typically the best" Nice Ockam's Razer refenrece
Good. I hate Minecraft, but that's my terrible opinion.
I don't get it. The WiiU is the only home console that has self-publish content for indies on eshop. If they don't embrace iniciatives like this, I don't get this market anymore. Also, the WiiU gamepad would be the perfect tool for crafting and exploring the world. They might have already a new contract with sony, that's the only resonable reason.
"Wii U is unlikely even though when Microsoft contract runs out we'll put it in PlayStation and (probably) other consoles minus the WiiU." Any reason why the WiiU version is unlikely Berg? Even thought Im not much a Minecraft guy. There has to be a legitimate reason besides the fact it's unlikely. Shady practices like this annoys me.
Well, this stinks. I just got the iOS verson of Minecraft (and I also have the PC version) and I was wondering if there were any plans on taking MC to Wii U or (more preferably) 3DS. This just kinda stomped on that idea for the Wii U, then.
I've got it on my 360, and while it's great, the Wii U would probably run it better. The Xbox's RAM constraints makes the worlds way smaller than PC, and most annoyingly, we're getting a scaled down version of the End now. The Wii U would at least have a full End, and potentially be capable of using the SSD for virtual memory for infinite worlds. Now we'll never know. I do know about the contract, but even when it expires? That stinks. Also, if Mojang reads this, can they get 4J to bug fix the 360 Edition? I like it, but it still has issues. Ghasts spawn several times faster than you can kill them (literally), some creepers on rare occasion have double health (those also survive their explosions, what's with that?), my save data has issues, etc.
Edit: Oh, and mooshrooms seem to despawn outside of mushroom biomes after a few minutes, making them impossible to farm.
i would play this to death on wiiu. so tiny on my phone.
@FarukoSH Wrong. It costs less on Xbox. But the Xbox, despite having promise at first, is staring to seem scaled down from PC. Nowhere near the degree phones are, but still. It's the Xbox 360, come on.
lol glad it isnt then i wouldnt play it and glad there not bring it xD already enough with those miiverse comments about having this on wii u -.-
Meh...game is a bit overrated anyways.
Shrugs The game is ideal on PC anyway.
It seems like there have been quite a few companies pulling away from the Wii U lately. It'll be interesting to see what these same people do once the great first-party games actually come out on the system.
No thanks I want to see new games on the Wii U not year old ports.
If I'm going to play Minecraft, I'm going to play it on PC.
I can only imagine Minecraft on the Wii U. It'd be amazing!
Something else that people don't think much about is Minecraft, but on the 3DS! I'm pretty sure it'd work on the 3DS like a charm. So I say that if it eventually IS ported to the Wii U, that it should be ported to the 3DS as well.
Imagine, with the GamePad, you could have a map, and the items menu, all on that screen. The 3DS could do the same thing, but on it's bottom screen, and on both consoles you could select your items with the stylus.
Since playing it here on my PC, I've honestly thought that Minecraft would be a WONDER of a game on any of Nintendo's consoles. Even including the Wii.
Hoping it eventually does happen! :B
Any bets that it'll end up on OUYA and SteamBox.
I owned it on 360 first, but after playing it on PC, I find trying to play it on a controller extremely awkward. So I'm not interested tbh.
It would be good if they integrated cross-platform play with PC, otherwise I see no reason why they would even bother. Well besides another game-of-the-year award, because apparently you can win that multiple years in a row.
I never saw the point in the 360 one personally.
Why telling the truth that it's coming to wii u? if they sad it would the Wii u owners will wait for the arrival for Wii u... and the ps3 and xbox will sell zero... =P just optimist...
@Bob-t-Gmaestro You know Nintendo started all this exclusivity contract stuff back in the 8-bit days? It's the one of the big reasons they've struggled with 3rd parties ever since, because they didn't even pay for it, they just threatened companies they had to make them exclusive or they would refuse to allow them on their consoles.
Well, i'd be more concerned that neither Witcher 3 or the recently announced Thief 'reboot' are coming to the Wii U in 2014. Both have been announced for PC, PS4 and other next-gen consoles (i.e. Xbox). Looks like UbiSoft are the only publisher committed to multiplatform releases and that could disappear unless sales pick up by the year's end.
This game should really be experienced on a PC if you have one but is there a good reason not to release it on the WiiU? I would get it even though I already have it on the PC just because it would be cool to use the game pad controller.
Not the kind of game that interests me though it would be nice to have Mojangs support as it looks like it would do well on WiiU...
I think that Minecraft would work really well on the Wii u using the gamepad to craft.
@Fillytase The gamepad seems the perfect kind of controller for the game.
If it was anything like the xbox version then nope, I wouldn't buy it. I have the superior PC version, so why would I need another console port?,
I don't like minecraft at all, but at first I thought this article was at a game called "Doesn't look like minecraft" and it would be coming anytime soon on Wii U eShop!
What a catch 22. No triple-A software comes to the Wii U because the user install base isn't high, and the user install base isn't high because no triple-A software comes to the Wii U. So frustrating to own a Wii U and deal with these developers' comments...
@dizzy_boy It's been confirmed for Ouya I believe.
Great news! Minecraft sucks
Could NL dig a bit and find out why? Without a reason, it just seems like it's a "up-yours" to WiiU owners!
@Bliquid - Very true!
WiiU eshop is far from an indie haven right now...
Wow, I didn't realize that developers HAD to give a reason for their decisions. Who knew? Perhaps he just doesn't like the Wii U? Is that so wrong?
@LordLzGlad It's not wrong, but it can't hurt to ask. We're not DEMANDING it, but as he has the right to dislike it, we equally have the right to ask why, even if he doesn't want to answer. No need to make it aggressive!
My kids play the free version on my 7" tab and the free version on our very old PC so I don't see how the Wii U wouldn't be perfect for this. My only guess for "why not" would be limited resources. No matter how much money the guy has I still think it's a small development team, and to be quite honest I'ld program for the 90 million PS3 install base before the 5 million Wii U install base. That's an easy choice.

One less casual game on the Wii U. Fine by me.
Minecraft does take an unusually large amount of processing power for the type of game it is, but even so, I don't understand why anyone would get the game for anything other then PC. There are so many advantages to playing the PC version over any other version (bar possibly mobile for mobile's sake) that you'd be doing yourself a huge disservice by playing it on any other platform.
My PC already isn't able to run it, so we've got just 1 laptop with the game. We have always been hoping for a Wii release, or maybe a 3DS release or even DS or DSi, but it's a shame it isn't coming to Wii U. It seems like a perfect combination.
I have the PC version, which is quite ahead of the console version, so though disappointing I don't mind much.
@JuanitoShet Wii & 3DS can't run Minecraft. Wii might run Pocket Edition (might have to be retail due to size limits) & 3DS definitely should be able to. Not PC though.
too bad. but thats the status quo of 3rd party attitude towards ninty.
also ms dedicated a dev team to port minecraft. i doubt ninty will do the same. everybody love ps4 thats why its a given it will go there.
Seriously? They'd consider a console that is on it's way out over a console that's fresh and new? I know ChaosAngel said that they wouldn't have to develop for the Game Pad, but think of the possibilities they would have with it! You could have your inventory there at any given time, you could use your crafting there, and you could have a more detailed map. I think Bergensten is underestimating Nintendo.
So...they don't like money?
On a side note: when the heck did so many Nintendo complainers infiltrate Nintendo Life? I swear, it's like a plague - this is one place I'd expect to CELEBRATE Nintendo fandom, not feel compelled to defend it against naysayers...
@CharbroiledEwok I've wondered the same thing. Then I realised that sad, lonely people need a place to hang out, too.
Good, minecraft sucks
ehh im not worry about it
I would buy it and it would be amazing, but the PC version will always be the definitive version rather than any of the console versions.
Hey guys.. they are taking a page fro mm capcom.. ya know.. it makes too much sense so dont put it there... these guys are a joke..
I'm gonna be honest and say that Mojang have always been Douchebags and they get a crapton of undeserved praise by making one game that everyone I know can't stand to play unless it has mods up the ass.
2nd best dev of all time, right?
@Hyperstar96 Minecraft was not on Ps3. It was on Xbox 360.
Other than that, I am really not looking forward to it. Because I have it on my iPhone and I spend my time on there a lot.
Microsoft ruins everything! Its like Mojang hates Nintendo!
@Chrysanthemum Did it
@teagandonnelly Yay!
ok heres my views i think it should come to wii u and all the consoles i personaly have a wii u and i would love to see it come to this console i think it would be a big hit if it came also i belive that are putting this idea down xbox or ps players and they just everything before us because they think there console is superior sure maybe nintendo should have waited abit long to put it out there to get us more stuff but it dosent matter as long as we get what everbody gets
WiiUでも出してほしいです!!!!!
