New Super Mario Bros. 2 hit UK stores last Friday, and today's all-format chart shows the plumber's latest platforming adventure making its debut at number two. While we may instinctively wonder why it didn't make it to number one, that placing actually matches the performance of the original New Super Mario Bros on DS. It was beaten out by Sleeping Dogs, for the record, a multi-platform open-world action title from Square Enix.
Three other Nintendo-exclusive titles made it into the top 20. With the Olympics now over, Mario & Sonic at the London Olympic Games dropped out of the medals to fifth, while 3DS evergreen titles Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land came in 14th and 18th respectively. Just two more titles exclusive to Nintendo systems made the overall top 40, with the irrepressible Moshi Monsters: Moshling Zoo on DS at number 22, while Mario Kart Wii scraps over the line in 38th place.
Not a terrible week for Nintendo system's games in the charts, though Mario's repeated boasts of being number one when reaching those flagpoles is, in this case at least, not quite on the money.

Well its good to see Mario is selling well as usual...
they should call metroid
super mario and the legend of mario(zelda)
Hardly surprising, people love Mario. Especially 2D.
so basically it managed to climb to number two in the charts in just two shopping days? Not bad
Can someone please tell me why this Moshi Monsters game is in the top charts all the time?
@Firejonie Yeah, i'm a bit concerned about that too..
Well mario needs to give other games a chance to sell well every now and then.
It's also worth bearing in mind that Mario really has legs. What I mean to say is that the games have legs in terms of sales, not the character...although that's not to say that the character himself doesn't have legs, because he does. He uses them to jump...
OK, perhaps a better way of putting it is that Mario usually has a long tail. The games that is, not the character...
@PixelatedPixie
Although sometimes Mario does indeed have a tail.
@PixelatedPixie
I think I follow you lol!
@Pikachupwnage
Damn it!
Last Friday, as in a couple of days ago? Or last Friday, as in over a week ago? (sorry, I'm not keeping up with UK release dates)
Never mind, both NSMB2 and Sleeping Dogs came out on the 17th of August, I believe Mario will sell better over time than Sleeping Dogs however.
It's number one in the Netherlands. The entire top three of the Dutch charts are 3DS games.
Not bad considering the game isn't multi-platform,like Sleeping Dogs.
Does this number include the digital downloads? If not, I wonder how that might change things up.
Nintendo milked New Super Mario Bros and only got number two. Haha
I bought both Sleeping Dogs and New Super Mario Bros 2 on Friday. I'm glad Sleeping Dogs reached the top spot since it's a new IP not only that it helped that it's a multi-platform title. Both games are great and NSMB2 is bound to stay in the top 10 for a long while
Mario probably came out way AFTER the game that beat it, otherwise, it would have easily taken the #1 spot.
@grumblegrumble
No. Sleeping Dogs came out the same month just 5 days before it, so no Sleeping Dogs gave it a run for it's money.
My dad is getting it for me for my birthday...already beat the first one!!!
Does this take into account NSMB 2's digital downloads?
If not I can see Nintendo having increased problems getting their games into the top 10 in the future.
