Maybe next time, Mario

New Super Mario Bros. 2 hit UK stores last Friday, and today's all-format chart shows the plumber's latest platforming adventure making its debut at number two. While we may instinctively wonder why it didn't make it to number one, that placing actually matches the performance of the original New Super Mario Bros on DS. It was beaten out by Sleeping Dogs, for the record, a multi-platform open-world action title from Square Enix.

Three other Nintendo-exclusive titles made it into the top 20. With the Olympics now over, Mario & Sonic at the London Olympic Games dropped out of the medals to fifth, while 3DS evergreen titles Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land came in 14th and 18th respectively. Just two more titles exclusive to Nintendo systems made the overall top 40, with the irrepressible Moshi Monsters: Moshling Zoo on DS at number 22, while Mario Kart Wii scraps over the line in 38th place.

Not a terrible week for Nintendo system's games in the charts, though Mario's repeated boasts of being number one when reaching those flagpoles is, in this case at least, not quite on the money.
