Originally we were told SEGA's Game Gear would reach Europe in mid-March, but after a minor delay the portable is coming to the continent this Thursday. The GG games aren't the only Virtual Console goodness as Wii gets a long-awaited 8-bit blaster too.
3DS Virtual Console
Sonic the Hedgehog: Triple Trouble (Game Gear, SEGA, £4.50/€5) — Sonic's first Virtual Console appearance on 3DS is this 8-bit exclusive, introducing Nack the Weasel for the first time. It's not a bad little game, as our Sonic the Hedgehog: Triple Trouble review explains.
Shinobi (Game Gear, SEGA, £3.60/€4) — Joe Musashi's back for more ninja action, this time with a twist: there are multiple ninja to control, each with their own skills. Our Shinobi review has more.
Dragon Crystal (Game Gear, SEGA, £2.70/€3) — A difficult roguelike made more enjoyable by the Virtual Console's save point systems, it might not have aged brilliantly but if you're after a stern challenge it's not bad for £2.70. Our Dragon Crystal review explains.
Virtual Console
Mega Man 5 (NES, Capcom, 500pts) — At last, the Blue Bomber returns to Virtual Console with this typically enjoyable side-scrolling blaster. Read through our Mega Man 5 review while you're waiting for Thursday.
DSiWare
Hints Hunter (CIRCLE Entertainment, 200pts) — Our Hints Hunter review starts by comparing the game to a book of carpet samples, which probably explains everything you need to know.
Will you be picking up some GG goodness this week?

Wow, it sure took Hints Hunter some time to reach Europe.
Nothing special again, where is VVVVVV or mutant mudds? will have to get space blobs for vita instead!
No Ace Mathician Yet?
And now with MM5 out the way, Capcom can FINALLY get round to thinking about MM6 and the already rated MMX2. :3
@squashiejoshie Hugo just released the first trailer, doubt we'll see the game released just yet
GAME GEAR GAMES YESSSSSS HOOOOOO MY GAWD
Was hoping for demo again but looks like this week is a bit different.
Nothing for me despite Game Gear's welcome debut. Mutant Mudds? V?
I've not played it but at £2.70, its still better than some of the GB games for £2.70
Anytime Mega Man is in the mix it is a good week!
I though Cave Story was promised for March :C
umm.. no.. if i wanted to play game gear games i would have gotten a game gear some 20 years ago. i am not among the target audience for the 3ds.. i thought i was because i see myself as a gamer.. but obviously, nintendo is not for me. overpriced abandonware seems to be all we will get. why there ist not EVERY single retail game in the eshop for download is completely beyond me. the 3ds had SO much promise but they pi$$ed it all away. this is no good sign for the upcoming wii u. allthumbsdown
Mega Man 5...Finally!
No mudds, vvvvvv, and STILL no cave story. Love me my 3ds right now, this would be a great time for those games.
@JimJam707
Well, with CS3D out, I don't honestly know if they're ever going to release it here :S
As for me, I'm just dying waiting for VVVVV and Mutant Mudds. I don't think I can wait longer ç.ç
Also, just to finish staying IT, I think I'll pass on the GG games... Or maybe I'll get the roguelike, will see in the next days!
Mutant Mudds has a Q2 release date in Europe - stop whining.
Definitely going to try out some Sonic goodness on Thursday
Glad you guys finally got MM5! I personally like 3 best, but 5 is also good.
@Angelic_Lapras_King: MM titles left for both(Wii/3DS) VCs are:
MM 6(Nes)
2/3/4/5(Gameboy)
MM 7/X2/X3/Soccer(SNes) (Edit: There is also Mega Man & Bass, but I don't think Capcom will translate an originally SNes game that they already gave us as a Gameboy Advance title. Esp. since the SNes game was never released here in the States anyway.)
@Ryno: Agreed!
Yes, MM5 is finally here! I've been anxiously looking forward to this ever since it was released in the US last year, and have been saving an extra 500 points on my Wii Shop for ages just for this game, so Thursday can't come soon enough! Now I just hope the eventual MM6 & X2 will not have a year long delay between their US and EU releases.
Also interested in Dragon Crystal and Sonic Triple Trouble. I don't care if they've aged, as I have a high retro-tolerance: for me, getting to know these old games is a valuable experience! Never owned a Game Gear back in the day, so I'm also interested in seeing how these games play out compared to the Gameboy titles.
@Myx Dude, take a chill pill, calm down, and inhale and exhale for a few minutes. Nobody said you have to buy this "abandonware", but some of us actually enjoy having an easy access to old games without having to hunt down a gazillion different consoles and games on eBay. The eShop might not have retail games yet, but IMO it still offers some pretty good original content even for those who aren't interested in the VC games. But whatever, I know you're just gonna whine anyway, as your post seems incredibly trollish. U mad, bro?
Meh, not interested...
why there ist not EVERY single retail game in the eshop for download is completely beyond me.
Thats actually a bad thing. Nintendo don't do sales so every retail game would be full price years later and you can't sell them if you don't want them anymore.
@Ryno All too true my friend.
Mega Man V for me on Thursday, still chewing over whether or not Sonic and Shinobi will be worthy purchases yet...
@James I recently did an interview with Hugo and he said that the release is 'Super Near', So it shouldn't actually be long now...

I'll probably get Sonic: Triple trouble at some point. Also, it may not be a game I'm interested in but wasn't the MD version of Super street fighter II with online supposed to come out this month?
Triple Trouble and Shinobi for me~
Wow Mega Man 5 only 500 Points, certainly gonna pick that game up! It never came out over here in Europe. I hope it is in 60 Hz, because Mega Man always suffers badly from the Pal conversion...
Don't know which GG Game I should get...
Just Shinobi for me this week. Happy with that.
I recommend Dragon Crystal. So far it is the only Game Gear game I bought, but it is very good.
People will always find something to complain about won't cha'?
NOA QUICK release some new game gear games on the eshop before europe catchs up to us....see the joke in this?
See a lot of calls for Mutant Mudds on here, and whilst I agree...what about Sakura Samurai, am I the only European gamer interested in this gem?
Wait...how much is Sonic Triple Trouble in Down Under Dollars? I need to know how much to keep till Friday.
I would so much rather have games like mega man 5 on the 3ds.
I'm going to download Mega Man 5!
Finally a really good week again. still waiting for all that 3DSware though...
If you dont like the system you purchased then just sell the bloody thing ( like when I gave my PS3 the boot ) dont post on forums with winge stories like a masqueraded harlequin because nobody cares..
All 3 Game Gear games plus a Mega Man 5 with fries please...
No 'new' games this week means I don't have to review anything and can chill out and enjoy Game Gear games on a decent screen. Good enough for me!
You still have Dr. Mario to review from last week.
Oh... Finally, in the last week of the month they managed to release the game gear games in europe too. It´s nice that game gear is now in the 3ds VC too, but... I really hate this waiting and waiting for some title that I´d like to download. Also, there is no guarantee that they will rerelease all their games on their systems, if we take a look at Nintendo´s history with rereleasing older games..whis is another thing that makes me dislike Nintendo
Well, as you should know by now, some are impossible to release and some would be very expensive to release. It is impossible to have Rare's own games on the Virtual Console outside of the Donkey Kong games. And licensed games are very expensive to obtain the license again, especially for a relatively obscure service like the Virtual Console.
I will download Megaman 5 when it's available!
You are right that some games are hard to release because of those hindrances, but I think there isn´t any real effort by Nintendo to even try to make the VC library be as complete as possible. They are just trying to attract mostly new (and young) gamers but people that are trying to have a somewhat complete library by the VC service feel cheated.. Other companies are to blame too, but if Nintendo is so obviously benefit-orientated, it is kind of hard to ask other companies to be more generous in this regard. And of course that´s only my opinion.
And also I find it strange that you call the VC service obscure.. I mean it´s the first time since apr. 20 years or so that customers are able to buy the old GB and other systems games (I´m not talking about used games market, obviously). The main reason I bought my 3ds in the first place was mostly just because of the VC service! Never before has it been possible to buy your favourite old Nintendo (and other) games onto your handheld console and play them anytime you want. No cartridge changing anymore. I just cannot accept how this can even remotely be termed as an "obscure service".
I say its obscure in that many Wii owners don't really use the Shop at all, using the Wii only to play retail games with some owners being unaware the VC even exists.
