We haven't heard much about Fire Emblem on 3DS for the past few months, but Nikkei (via Andriasang) report the game will kick off the system's add-on DLC service in early 2012.
Now called Fire Emblem: Awakening, the game will release in Japan on 19th April, with a new "free map" system letting you explore the world with a little less restraint.
The Nintendo Direct online press conference held earlier today in Japan didn't mention the potential DLC, but Nikkei has unrivalled history in getting Nintendo things right.

Sounds neat! If Fire Emblem marks the start of the 3DS' DLC service here in the States, as well, it looks like it may be a while before we're able to purchase add-on content...
AAAHHHHH!!! This Fire Emblem 3DS game has got me FREAKING OUT MAN! I had no idea I loved the turn-based RPG genre. I always felt it would be boring or something!!! I feel like such an idiot!! All of the RPG's I've missed!!
It all started one day I was bored. I had like $50 to spend so I said "hmmm... I'ma try something new." Went to gamestop and bought 2 games of that genre for the DS (but I played them on the 3DS). I got Golden Sun: Dark Dawn and Final Fantasy: the 4 heros of light. So I pop in Golden Sun...according to my 3DS I played the game for about 9hrs (not kidding it looked to be around 8hrs and 45 min.) This genre is so...so...I CANT EVEN EXPLAIN IT! I am in love with this genre! I seriously feel that I can't stress enough how freakin incredible this genre is! I played the hell out of those games!
Now Fire Emblem comes out for ambassador's... this time according to my 3DS I played the game for about 13hrs and a half. I am so tremendously hooked on this game that it's literally hard to not play it. I have like 3 dreams a night about the game. I hate when this happens. Now I want to buy every Fire Emblem game ever made! If this games doesn't get localized...sniff I'll cry
Thanks to the ambassador program, I am now a Fire Emblem fan. Can't wait for FE3DS!
Are those real DLC or just locked in card like Solatorobo,Dragon Quest 9 etc?
@belmont It's going to be paid DLC so one would imagine it's a proper download, but we're not quite sure of the details yet
Yeah, this isn't Spotpass content but true add-on content, so I'm hoping that means more elaborate downloads in the future. I'd hate to have to pay for furniture in the next Animal Crossing.
i cant wait for this game! Fire emblem is one of my favorite series
BOOO!!! for paid DLC, not Fire Emblem.
Wasn't Nintendo against DLC for their own games?
As much as I don't like games getting released while DLC for them are either ready or almost completed, the thought of having more Fire Emblem just makes me happier!
I'm sure none of us want any "to access this side quest, you must purchase it from the Nintendo e-shop." moments.
DLC .... For only 2 payments of 9.99 you can get yourself a bundle of weapons, weapons include
Rapier
Silver lance
Silver sword
Silver axe
Brave lance
Brave sword
Brave axe....
but wait theres more, Buy it now and get the exclusive magic tomb, Excalibur
yeah ill pass on DLC lol
Free map? You mean like Fire Emblem Sacred Stones? Just because they ignore a feature for two games doesn't mean it's new.
These graphics are ugly, too. I miss the spritework.
@Zephren: Once the weapons break, you can make another payment for replacements!
DLC, you say? Well then, prehaps we will see this game stateside after all.
@brandonbwii
You'd "love to have to pay"? What? You don't like it being free?
@uel to be more realistic i think weapons will be 50 cents each. or better yet i think they should have DLC side quests. that would be awesome.
Nintendo of America was against Paid DLC not Nintendo in general.
Would love to see some more DLC for Mario Kart 7 ( more tracks from older MK games )
Great, I can't wait to pay for characters that will get pemenatley killed off, and expect me to repurchase them...
I'm excited for this new 3DS Fire Emblem. I don't like DLC though.
Nintendo said they were going to do DLC right.
To me that means no stupid DLC such as replacement weapons, Armour, clothing or virtual currency... or paying for the game and then you have to pay just to be able to play the rest of it.
Also I hope they mean that the DLC will add to the game rather than what should have been in the game.
I'm looking at you App Store!
@Zephren
@GigaFlanMan
Remember when Nintendo said that they didn't like the idea of DLC that made games easier (e.g. DLC for most facebook games, DLC for many ios games)?
If they stick to what they say, which they usually do, we won't be seeing any CheetLC in Fire Emblem.
As long as they don't take content from the original game and resell it as DLC like many companies do today, I'd be fine with it.
Yeah! I have faith in you, Nintendo. Don't let us down .
i hope this gets a NA release!
