We all want 3DS, and we all know the games we want to see on the system, but what do our gaming counterparts in Japan want to play? If you said "Square Enix RPGs", you just scored five points.
Japanese site 4gamer surveyed over 20,000 gamers to find out which title – announced or otherwise – they were most excited about. Unsurprisingly, Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest occupied the top two slots, with Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D rounding out the podium positions.
The list also contains many of the usual suspects: Gundam, Shin Megami Tensai, Mario Kart and more. The highest-profile title not on the list? Masuhiro Sakurai's flagship Kid Icarus: Uprising, which is nowhere to be seen. After this long an absence, perhaps Japanese gamers have forgotten all about Pit.

Not much Love for StarFox in Japan
very surprised by zelda's absence
Not that shocked. The Japanese gaming industry is failing because of the gamers, not the developers. It's been clear for a while now that quality can't be measured by the consumer trends over there.
Considering its not really a new Kid Icarus like the first two it doesn't surprise me a but. My DS library is full of Third Party games myself. 3DS continues to bring on games like Etrian Odyssey, Super Robot Taisen, Retro Game Challenge then ill be sold on the system. Its not first party Nintendo that makes the DS great for me either, its the incredible third party support.
What's the fourth one? it doesn't seem to be translated
Shocked about kid Icarus but that's it. Japan's always been about the rpgs. Kid Icarus will sell millions here in the states and Europe so I don't think Nintendo is going to worry about that list to much.
The only Final Fantasy games on Nintendo systems that can keep my attention are IV and it's sequel. I want to see something like the Playstation era games, otherwise i'm not buying.
@slapshot: What do you mean not new like the first two?
The fourth one is Zelda no Densetsu: Toki no Ocarina.. or Ocarina of Time as it's commonly known to us.
@Cloudcult10 My Japanese isn't very good but that first word looks like Zelda. Probably Ocarina.
wikis
Yup. "ゼルダの伝説 時のオカリナ" = OoT
(hehe, Rawkus beat me to it!)
I am totally surprised by this chart
Final Fantasy is boring as heck, man!!
Those japanese gamers are boring. xP
The sure like RPG's down there, don't they.
Yay for Etrian Odyssey!
@JesusSaves. No one asked what you wanted.
@drdark I dont see anywhere that the Japanese gaming industry is failing. Care to provide a source to back that up?
I knew the Japanese would want a Dragon Quest for 3DS.
Blech on Final Fantasy.
Yup, that's right. Square Enix gives us the good stuff. ...
But I weeaaally want the Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles series for the 3DS.
Japan really wants Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest.
OMG BOMBSHELL!!!!!
Nothing to see here, move along...
Anyone who says they don't want a 3DS clearly hasn't used one yet
@Jesus: That only helps his point
Kingdom Hearts 3DS w00t
@23 Or doesn't listen to the wise words of Prosody (fine, James Newton).
Starfox 64 was a great game, shame the people in Japan don't feel the same way.
@iz... the new kid icarus is very different from the 2d NES and Gameboy games. Metroid Other M proves that change can be great and I'm sure that it will be as well, but until more of the game is shown it doesn't surprise me that its not on the list.
Man Japanese gamers are so spoiled I don't even think they know it. Every new Zelda that's come out there has sold worse than the last one compared to everywhere else in the world. They get all these great exclusive games and things like the Super Mario Advance 4 e-reader cards with levels that weren't available anywhere outside of the country (unless you're lucky to find a rom or have success printing off fan-made translated cards) and the e-reader fails before most of that stuff is released to us! I bet it would have sold millions had the e-reader been used for an RPG.
Sure I love rpg's like Final Fantasy, and am glad they finally broke through into the States in the early 90s or so, yet all Japanese gamers really ever care about most is RPGs! Of course that means Mother 3 does good there, but is nowhere to be found here because of too many "cutesy-weird Japanese graphics" like the kind you see in Ufouria and Do Re Mi Fantasy and Bio Miracle Bokkutte Upa that aren't hardcore enough for American audiences.
Japanese gamers have a weird gaming taste. No surprise here...
We need Richard Dawson of Family Feud (sorry but Les Dennis of Family Fortunes doesn't compare to Dawson in any way) to do this special round - "Name the most anticipated 3DS franchises". And if anyone says "Alligator", "Turkey" or "September" you're out!
Where's the Zelda love?
@Kevin:
The fourth game, the one written in all Japanese, seems to be OoT.
Good grief, Final Fantasy VII 3D anyone?
@JesusSaves You might be waiting a while, considering the DS is still more than $100 after close to 6 years......
As for the topic at hand, I'm shocked.
@34: Who are you?
@35
your probably right, there's been rumors about a remake.
And i would for sure buy FF7-3d Day One!
@JesusSaves: lol, and the DS has been out since '04... that's five years you'll be waiting for your $75 3DS, dude, and that's if it ever drops that low at all. the phat is still like $80 even for refurbished/pre-owned units. :3
RPGs are like are FPS's only I actually think are FPS's are WAY worse...Everyone says if you hate FPS's your not a gamer... and Blaehhh Bleahhhhh...At least you dont see comments from someone in japan yelling man you FPS Lovers have no taste in games, RPG's are the best no contest(Even though RPG's are actually better than FPS's IMHO)
and i love final fantasy
Final Fantasy VII remake CONFIRMED!!!!
@James Newton
Exactly. I had no interest in 3DS, but after seeing them in person at E3, the sheer technological beauty of it is undeniable.
wow, almost all of them are 3rd party! and almost all of them are RPGs too...
What? They don't want Paper Mario? (Shudders)
@JesusSaves: I'm talking retail. If you want to take your chances with it, great, but i don't trust eBay for big-ticket items as far as I can kick it, and I don't recommend it either. 'grats on getting lucky, I guess.
Hehe 3ds sucks
@JesusSaves: why "hope it fails miserably"? if you don't want to play a game in 3D on it, all you have to do is leave the slider in the 'off' position. it's still got a more powerful processor under the hood, and it'll be able to play all the sweet games they've got listed as upcoming for it. :3
@JesusSaves
So you're saying that you don't want the 3DS because of the 3D? If you ask me, that's a stupid reason not to buy a console. Like dragon said, you could turn off the 3D, but even so, look at the all the great games that the 3DS is offering so far. You're saying that you're not interested in any of them?
RPGs and Robots...
this is why I wouldn't want to be a gamer in Japan.
@JesusSaves
My point exactly
the Japaneses are just afraid of flying
@JesusSaves: @3 It's not Nintendo's fault for the overhypment, it's overhyped because it's so cool, lol. It's not "gimmicky", it's the next step in portable gaming, and you can turn it off if you want, how is that gimmicky? You said it yourself, the systems that fail, didn't fail because the hardware was too good, it failed because it didn't have good games.
The first party titles aren't ALL remakes, maybe 50% are, but thats only because of the 3D, and they are trying to please the fans, but who cares about 1st party titles when there are so much good 3rd party titles already announced!
We see the 3DS line up so far, and almost every developer is developing or will develop for it. I mean, the thing hasn't even come OUT yet, and there are so much developers, imagine when it comes out?
@2: And downloadable content is bad how? Everyone is doing it, not just nintendo.
@1: Nintendo, and Microsoft, and Sony... You yourself said it again: "the 1st party launch titles are pretty much all remakes. I don't need another copy of Starfox 64 however great its graphics may be."
That doesn't sound like casual games to me. Nintendo might be making casual games, but they aren't leaving their fans out in the cold either. Microsoft with Kinect, and Sony with Move is doing the same thing, lol.
All we have here is a troll who is too poor to afford a 3DS when it first comes out. Hence the "I'll buy it when it comes under $75" and the "I use eBay". Move along people, move along.
@JesusSaves: don't mean to butt into this argument but so far i can see that your not that much of a nintendo fan yet your on a nintendo fan site...How is that working out in your twisted world?
@JesusSaves: if all you're gonna do is crap on everything you see, why bother sticking around here, of all places? the hype is only gonna keep on snowballing -- especially on a Nintendo-based site -- and the 3DS is clearly something you despise. :3
Now the real shocker to me is Wheres SSF4 on the list??
also for people complaning about wheres Paper Mario.... ITS ON THERE CHECK AGAIN
@JesusSaves: again, if you don't like it here, you're more than welcome to leave. i get the feeling you're not gonna be a happy camper if you stick around for much longer, with all the hype building around here :3
3DS Rules who wouldnt like it, if you like DS youll love 3DS, you know you can turn the 3D off right???
@Jesus
Nothing wrong with being a little synical about approaching anything. Sometimes it`s makes it that much better when you Do go in with doubts and such. As far as pricing goes, if you can find one for that price, more power to ya. lol Back on topic: Looking forward to Kid Icarus ,Mario Kart, RE and far too many to list here. Hoping to buy this on day 1. Wish they`d make a Prowrestling. A sequal to that`s Waaaaaaaay overdue !
What's the point on this post? Sadly the Japanese hasn't been translated, sounds to me that Japan is getting tired of Nintendo recyclying old games? I could be right, The 3DS will be a huge seller.
Where are my five points?
Im disappointed, wheres Monster Hunter on the list =(
JesusSaves is just a troll, and the number one rule concerning a troll is "don't feed the troll". So if you don't like what the troll says, then don't respond to the troll.
(Yep, I contradicted myself)
Before I get started I just wanted to Point out the Block of Text Next to the Comment Box. It says and I quote "and be Nice to One Another" Try to get along guys, Everyone has there own view and have the Right to say it.
Personally I can hardly wait for the 3DS. I skipped the DSi because it felt like a filler and I knew something like the 3DS would come along to Blow it out of the Water. I mean it has all of the DSi's features plus 3D Games, 3D Camera, Prospect of 3D Movies, better Download Content, Analog Slide Pad.... Shall I go on?
One thing that I desperately want is Super Smash Bros for the 3DS. I've known that SSB is heavy on the Hardware so now that a Handheld with the Power to do it is here I want my Portable SmashBros. Think about it. How great would it be to Pull out your 3DS and Play a Quick Match while waiting on the Train or in Line. Multi-Player Would really open up with it being able to communicate via WiFi. What would be awesome is if you could play online against people with SSBB on their Wiis. Imagine being away somewhere but still be able to hook-up with your friend on his Wii while you played him with your 3DS. That would be great. I've calmed myself by playing this Homebrew version some guy made but it's in 2D 16 bit and most of the wanted Features are not available and the Gameplay isn't great either. My inner Brawler wants some Real SSB on the DS.
@DjinnFighter, etc.: Zelda is on the list. It's written in Japanese as the fourth entry. Ocarina of Time.
@Otaku: I heard from video game writers on 1up.com that Japanese gamers prefer to play cooperative games rather than competitive ones. That's part of the reason why Dragon Quest IX is so popular in Japan. Even games such as Monster Hunter have a cooperative twist.
No matter where you go in Japan, they're playing the same things, so that they can just go up to the person next to them for help. It's the whole different demographic of living in a small country. They're spoiled, I tell you!
@everyone arguing with the son of God: Calm down.
