Sega of Japan's "Project Ringo" has finally been revealed in this week's Famitsu magazine. To the surprise of very few here at Nintendo Life, it's an all-new Puyo Puyo game!
Imaginately titled Puyo Puyo 7, the latest entry in Sega's classic falling-block puzzler series appears quite similar to previous Puyo games, with the majority of the basic rules remaining intact. As always, though, there's a new scoring mechanic to play with; the new "Transformation" mode allows you to build up energy by countering enemy attacks and then use that energy to either enlarge or shrink your character (and their Puyos), adding another level of strategy.
Puyo Puyo 7 is set for release on the DS on July 30 in Japan and will feature both local and online multiplayer, as well as support for download play. Versions for PSP and Wii will follow at some point during the latter half of the year. The Puyo series hasn't seen an international release since Puyo Pop Fever in 2004 so it's hard to speculate on whether the new title is likely to leave Japan, but one would imagine that a new Puyo game wouldn't warrant so much hype unless a worldwide release was on the cards.
The official Project Ringo site will be providing a full reveal on April 3, so until then, stay tuned to NintendoLife!

Cool, I've always wanted to play this series.
Puyo Puyo? IS THAT ALL? At least there's an online mdoe, but it seemed like it was going to be something much more...
That's cool I guess. There are already a few Puyo games on the Virtual Console already, if I remember correctly.
First of all, awesome avatar, Olimar. Did you draw that?
But about Puyo, that's really great news. I hope the planned Wii version is for WiiWare. Any word on that? Some will disagree, but I just don't think of a falling block game as worth retail price. I was just about to download Mean Bean Machine, too, so I'm glad I checked this site first.
Yes, I drew it. It's part of this larger image: http://fc10.deviantart.com/fs42/i/2009/062/f/0/Olimar_on_a_leaf_by_Olimar91.jpg
And thanks =)
But it can't be number 7 if there have been 8 games in the main series line...
They're probably not counting Puyo Puyo! 15th Anniversary.
According to Wikipedia the prject ringo site has shown it was Puyo Puyo since March 24th...I guess now that the famitsu scans are out everyone has gone "Ah, I see" about it. I hope to see some videos and other goods when the site opens for real.
All I can say is can this one please come outside of Japan even though I'm not a fan of the art style used since Sonic Team developed the games...well the N-Gage/GBA and Cellphone game was technically the first Sonic Team Puyo Puyo game but I have a feeling they grabbed an incomplete game when buying the rights off Compile.
I cannot imagine this would be a disc release unless it's gonna be Puzzle Quest stylee.
According to the website it seems it is going to be a disc release, there is a pricetag of 5000 yen or something. For 1000 wiipoints i would have bought it.... Shame... Got me all hyped up for nothing sega is shaping p though...
The only glimmer of hope is I remember Puyo Puyo fever being a smilar price but when Puyo Pop fever came out in Europe it was £20...I have a feeling that even at that price it was hard to sell (and did best on Gamecube which probably explains why that was the only console release to hit North America) which kind of meant they stopped bothering.
Of course the £20 came at a price. No Japanese voices (the manual even describes the option ).
Anyway the site for Puyo Puyo 7 is open now and it has a song which isn't quite as catchy as the Let's Tap tune...it looks similar to Puyo Puyo fever only Fever mode now uses either the giant or mini puyos (the characters also change appearance based on which).
