Best LGBTQ+ Switch Games

Spiritfarer (Switch eShop)

Spiritfarer is a delicate, sleepy game about ferrying souls through the underworld to their final destination, whenever they're ready. Its tale of care and community will resonate with anyone under the LGBTQ+ umbrella, and some of its characters are explicitly under that umbrella themselves.

It shouldn't be upsetting to help an already-dead person to pass on into an unknown afterlife, and yet, every single character you help through that final door leaves their mark in some way.

Bugsnax (Switch eShop)

LGBTQ+ representation in Bugsnax is more low-key than a lot of the games on this list, but in some ways that makes it even more special — the inclusion of non-binary and gay characters as part of the cast is natural and normal. Several people on the development team also fall under the LGBTQ+ umbrella, too!

Steven Universe: Save the Light (Switch eShop)

Steven Universe is a Cartoon Network show that's about the Crystal Gems, a team of evil-fighting badasses, alongside their half-human friend and sidekick, Steven Universe. However, the show quickly became known for its portrayals of LGBTQ+ relationships and identities, helped along by its non-binary and bisexual creator, Rebecca Sugar. Save The Light takes those themes and makes an action-RPG out of them, including an intersex/non-binary playable character.

Life is Strange: True Colors (Switch eShop)

Alex Chen, the lead character of the Life is Strange spin-off, True Colors, is a bisexual Asian-American woman who can decide to date men or women throughout the course of the game. mxmtoon, who provides Alex's singing voice, is also bisexual.

Murder By Numbers (Switch eShop)

Murder By Numbers is steeped in gay culture, with campness and drag at its heart. Murder By Numbers' director, Ed Fear, told Gayming Mag that he wanted to portray "positive depictions of femme gay men in media – characters that were unapologetically camp and effeminate" as a gay man himself, and many of the characters are based on himself and his friends.

I Was A Teenage Exocolonist (Switch eShop)

I Was a Teenage Exocolonist is a deckbuilding time-loop RPG that puts inclusivity at its core, with customizable pronouns for the player character that appears on a slider, and romancing possibilities that let you pursue relationships with whomever you take a fancy to (this also extends to more complex polyamorous situations, as well).

The cast of NPCs includes five trans and nonbinary characters. As developer Sarah Northway told us in our interview, "There is political strife in Exocolonist, but never over gender or race."

Desta: The Memories Between (Switch eShop)

Coming from ustwo, the developer of Monument Valley and Alba: A Wildlife Adventure, this game sees Desta engaging in some dreamscape dodgeball in order to deal with their relationship issues, with themes of gender identity and self-reflection.

In fact, things can get pretty heavy here as the game also touches on parental loss and mental health issues as Desta explores their memories, so don't go in expecting just a quick round of turn-based dodgeball!

Heart of the Woods (Switch eShop)

Heart of the Woods is a romantic visual novel that follows Maddie and Tara, two best friends who go to investigate a haunted village, only to discover that the ghost is a really cute girl named Abigail. Will Maddie be able to save Abigail from the curse? You'll have to play to find out.

Date Everything! (Switch eShop)

We're putting Date Everything! on list list because it's so dang likeable, even with its launch-period bugs and issues.

A text-heavy dating sim that lets you romance inanimate objects in and around your home, it's full of witty dialogue beautifully delivered by a who's who of gaming and Hollywood voice talent, excellent artwork and character design, and wonderfully considered content warning system, and an inclusive cast and attitude.

Some of its relationships feel underexplored (which is perhaps inevitable given the 100 potential dateables available), and narrative inconsistencies can distract from the stellar quality of the delivery, but Sassy Chaps' diverse game is jam-packed with charm.

Chicory: A Colorful Tale (Switch eShop)

Much like Wandersong — director Greg Lobanov's previous game — Chicory comes from a place of LGBTQ+ acceptance, with at least one non-binary character and a lesbian relationship in the game. The player character is presented as genderless, too, and you can pick whatever name you like for them (although it tends to be based on your favourite food).
