Review Adventures of Lolo (3DS eShop / NES)
Bubbles and puzzles and DEATH
The fine folks over at HAL Laboratory have an affinity for protagonists who could double as pretty decent basketballs, and the often-forgotten NES puzzler Adventures of Lolo features our first example of a blob hero. Unlike the platforming cuteness of the Kirby series, arguably HAL's most famous creation, Lolo has a...
Review Adventures of Lolo (Wii U eShop / NES)
YOLO, Lolo
HAL Laboratory's 1989 puzzler Adventures of Lolo falls into the same category as titles like Mach Rider and Clu Clu Land: C-list NES classics that are often overlooked today but provide an arcade-like fun experience for those searching out Nintendo's "deep cuts" from the '80s. Adventures of Lolo is probably best remembered these days as...
Review Adventures of Lolo (Wii Virtual Console / NES)
Run Lolo Run
Before HAL labs created our favourite pink puffball named Kirby there was a blue blob by the name of Lolo. In 1989 when Adventures of Lolo was first released it got modest attention due to the quality of the game but as a brand never really made it big. However Lolo has been known to surface as a bad guy in some of the Kirby games so...

About The Game
This was the first game in the Eggerland puzzle series to be released in North America.
After the love of his life, Lala, is kidnapped by the Great Devil and taken to his haunted castle, our hero Lolo sets out to rescue her. The journey is perilous, as the Great Devil's fortress is guarded by a massive army. But Lolo has a few tricks up his sleeve, including a Magic Shot that turns enemies into eggs and an Emerald Framer that shields him from attacks. Combining clever environmental puzzles with tricky enemies and an engaging style, Adventures of Lolo is a true classic!

This game is bloody brilliant. It certain rivals Solomon's Key as one of the best puzzlers on this console. The tune is especially annoyingly catchy, much like Bubble Bobble.
So looking forward to this.
Wonderful! Adventures of Lolo rivals even Dr. Mario, Tetris, Solomon's Key, and Fire 'n Ice (a prequel from in terms of Solomon's Key, A.K.A. Solomon's Key 2 or Solomon's Key 0 depending on your views) addictiveness!
One of the better puzzler series for the NES, but harder to get into than for example Solomon's key do to the unique game mechanics. This will last you a long time and it's highly recommended.
hard puzzles and crackable passwords
this looks like a fun little puzzler.
This game is finally out in Europe! So so glad about this, and I'm most certainly more ecstatic about this week's VC selection (Lolo and Balloon Fight) than I was for any of Sega's offerings last week. Top stuff. This game's an instant download for me and I can't wait to spend my weekend on this.
Am very impressed with this so far =] Just downloaded it and am a newcomer to the game, but it's addictive! It's already getting really tricky too..
I played Adventures of Lolo with the Super Game Boy on my SNES and it was very hard later on, but I managed to get through all of the stages.
It's an addictive puzzle game, but it's unique gameplay style is not for everyone. I would say, it's for puzzle-freaks only!
I absolutely love this game to death. But is it not going to come to the US? Is it a Europe-only release? Because if so, shame on Nintendo.
Wolfman, it should do, it was released in America.
And yay, I completed this yesterday ^_^ Feels like such an achievement! Now bring on Lolo 2 and 3! (And, err, 1 for the USA =P)
I played this recently without knowing what to do or anything. Needless to say I kept having to suicide and restart the level. Its an enjoyable game and one I am sad to have missed out on when I first had my NES.
What is this game like. The screenshots look a little like an old game for the NES called Kickle Cubicle which was made by Irem.
It's not quite what I expected, and I probably would have been better off saving my points. It's alright, but I doubt I'll see it through to the end.
How far are you Mendez? Keep at it, it does pick up at around about floor 3-4. Then it's puzzle heaven from then onwards!
Lolo 2 and Lolo 3 are even better...the whole series is awesome!! I hope they all come out on the VC.
I think I'm probably on around the 10th-15th puzzle. It was alright I suppose but I just failed to see what the fuss was about..
Only that? Keep going, it's not that taxing there. It does get a lot more challenging and fun a tiny bit after where you are.
But then again, it just may not be your cup of tea. As a huge puzzle fan, it's a gem I'm glad I've discovered, but it isn't necessarily for everyone.
Daz is right again on this one. Lolo is a classic, 2-D puzzler in which each level requires you to evade enemies in order to secure hearts, open a treasure chest, and leave the room. The level design here is quite impressive. Lolo is long and challenging and well worth the 500 Wii points.
This game was one of my favorite games for NES when I was a kid, along with Super Mario Bros 3 and Kirby's Adventure. In fact, I still love this game. I can honestly tell you that this is an awesome game that is just as good as Dr. Mario and Yoshi's Cookie. If you liked either of those two >_> Anyways, please download and enjoi.
I've been waiting for this one. Although I can't justify giving it 5 stars, really, because it was surpassed in just about every way by both of its sequels (which of course I hope also come to the VC!). Still, it's quite a good game and a good introduction to the series - and the music is catchy too!
I remember renting this when I was a kid. When I finally finished it I felt really smart. Those pink and grey medusas scared the hell out of me! IMO, the puzzle aspect of Lolo is more enjoyable than Solomon's Key (which I consider more of an action game) since you're not rushed by a timer. The superb level design is constructed like a Sudoku or Picross puzzle.
I absolutely love it, though not as much as some others. This is my favorite puzzle game though!
i seen rumor that there is an expert mode, or some way you can change the skill level, i just recently beat it and i would prefer a more challenging run this time...... is there such a cheat to change the level of difficulty?
Adventures of Lolo games are a part of Eggerland series, in case you guys didn't knew. I believe the series was pretty popular in Japan, because there's 10 different games released over there, the last one being in 2000.
You can read more about the series from here: http://home.houston.rr.com/cbfinch/eggerland/
Here's wishing for a Eggerland comeback...
The first time I played this game was when I was just a kid, and at that time the puzzles, they seem to be too hard. A decade later and -5 buckazoids, I see the game as an introduction to the the World of Lolo games. The first puzzles are easy and you get familliar with the mechanics of gameplay. Things really start to spice up from the 5th floor where the puzzles are not as easy as they seem to be. Just wait you get to the 10-5 floor, the "ultimate puzzle room"! LOL.
"The Adventures of LOLO? Man you've better saved the receipt!" Quote from Anybody remember that?
Gah, I didn't watch what it was from, but I've heard of that...
Either way, couldn't they have actually picked a bad game for that line?
I loved this game. I finally beat it a few weeks ago after having downloaded it. That was gratifying...I can't wait until Adventures of Lolo 2 comes out so that I can do it again.
I remember seeing this series in Nintendo Power. Sadly, I never got to play it back in the day.
The style of puzzle solving is really unique. Even the graphics are still charming (vintage pixel art!!!).
OMG! Kickle Cubicle! I remember that! It was an awesome game and also must have the best mascot name in the entire NES library.
LOVE IT! I love this game and will be picking up the sequels as they come, great for anyone who likes to think.
Clever, basic game!
Bought it for the wife, Cant stand it myself but she loves it.
Im no good at puzzle games, I get her to do the puzzles in other games too
The only problem I have with this game is that it sort of feels a bit repetitive. It's definitely a brainbender, for sure. I would suggest Lolo 2 or 3 over this one (especially 3) - 2 because it is even more difficult, and 3 because it is far longer and has more to the gameplay.
i got 1000 points left so i think im gonna download this one, then when i finish lolo 2
wow this game is awesome! im at 6-something and some of those puzzles are real headscratchers!
I love this game! How many levels are on each floor though? I haven't been keeping track and am on floor 5. When I am done though, Lolo 2 is next on my list
I finished it in one night. Still the best spent points yet. I've got too many "difficult in the wrong way" games like Sonic (damn Marble Zone) and Star Tropics ("don't despair, mike, just replay the whole dungeon a few more times"). Lolo has a few annoying puzzles with fast moving creatures (where you've figured out HOW to do it, but keep making "finger errors") but it's 90% gold.
I agree with the comment above me, this game is difficult in a good way, where its challenging and you need your brain. ninja gaiden II, and zelda ALTTP are way unfairly hard.
No, this game isn't challenging. The other games in the series are. This one just introduces you to the concept. You can breeze through this one in no time. Floor 10 here is roughly the same difficulty as floor 3 or so in Lolo 2.
Phantom: 5 rooms per floor for 10 floors, making a total of 50 rooms in all.
It was one of the best puzzle games, similar to Kickle Cubicle. Trivia: You get to fight against Lolo and Lala in Kirby's Dreamland. Shame they were on opposite sides then!
Anyone have the music still stuck in your head?
I agree with the 4* rating you game it (that what I put in mine) it's a great game but it's feel really old like Solomon's Key it's not a bad things but since I didn't play it when it first came out I don't have the retro memory that came with it that make it a little less enjoyable to me...
I'm a puzzler fan and I played Lolo as a kid, so it's no great surprise that I (still) love the game today. It's an action puzzle game--much like Solomon's Key or Chip's Challenge--rather than a logic puzzle game (Sudoku, Kakuro, Picross) or Tetris-like (Dr. Mario, Planet Puzzle League, Meteos). Because of this, timing is an important part of many puzzles, although Lolo lacks the timer-of-death element that Solomon's Key features. I give the game 4/5 with respect to its quality and playability in the context of today. It's a very short game and the music--while catchy--gets repetitive very, very quickly. Sometimes a stage will seem harder than it should be for where it's placed in the game. Overall, though, it's a gem of a puzzler and any puzzle fan owes it to him- or herself to give it a try.
I love this game this is one of those games my mom played and beat before I did.
I live 8 hours from my family now and my mom wants a wii just because of this game.
wonderful
my friend has this game for vc its pretty fun but gets old quick ive never played the second but i imagine its the same just different puzzles
Very challenging game.
This seems like an interesting little puzzler, but it doesn't really interrest me much, so I don't think I'll get it.
This is the best puzzle game you can get. This and Toki Tori.
Really challenging, but worth it if you like ripping you hair out! =]
I played this one my NES. I was never a big fan of the series. Very generic
Excellent game, though I'm not much of a fan of the puzzle genre. Good timing, because my old NES is not compatible with my TV anymore
Can't wait for #3 to come out!
I was never a big fan of this game until I bought it at a pawn shop on clearance a few years ago. Turns out I loved it. The sequel is even better for those who are enjoying this game.
Would anybody be interested in seeing "Adventures of Lolo 4" on Wiiware once the third game gets released? I think I would. But make sure it has modern graphics.
Ah, so THIS is what lolo is. I saw "$00pah NiN10Doh!" on Newgrounds and this guy appeared twice randomly, and now I know where he's from. Whoa...must I check it out...? I guess.
i saw the irate gamer mention this game during one of his reviews so i decided to check this game out and it looks awesome
Just completed. A fantastic puzzle game, with some superbly evil level designs over the last 3 floors. Everything is completely fair and logical, though, it just takes some patience. This and Solomon's Key (which only just pips Lolo for my affections) are by far my favourite NES downloads.
Is this where they got LoLoLo in kirby from?
I can wholeheartedly recommend this little gem.
The music is repetitive and gameplay restricted, but it successfully pulls off some clever and challenging puzzles.
