This has likely been discussed in the past, and for that I appologize. But with some of my all time favorite games being released somewhat recently, I can't help but wonder the fate of Yoshi's Island for SNES. Was there anything that prevented this game from ever being released on the VC?

It uses the FX Chip.
Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.
I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!
Last I heard there might be legal issues regarding emulation of the Super FX chip (because it was made by a 3rd party company), which is why we haven't seen any Super FX games on the Virtual Console.
At this point, the Game Boy Advance version of Yoshi's Island has more chances of seeing a virtual re-release, as it doesn't use any special chips.
we've never heard anything about the FX chip straight from Nintendo, though. It's still speculation.

That reminds me, does anyone know if the VC release of The Legend of Zelda is the GBA version? The text at the beginning is from the Classic NES Series instead of the original.
If you're really craving some Yoshi Island action, go find a copy of the GBA port. And I think I heard it might resurface as a 3D Classic.
That's what I'm thinking, kinda sucks the Wii has issues with the chip...there's like...no way around it huh? Would love to play that game on the big screen again, lol.

Keep it PG-13-ish.
1. If unofficial emulators on computers can emulate Super FX games then Nintendo can do it as well. See GBA version of Yoshi's Island. 2. If the Super FX chip was a license, who cares? The SNES needed the chip, but the GBA, PC and Wii do not. 3. I can't say why there are no FX games yet, probably just coincidence. 4. I'm trying to complete the sequel, Yoshi's Island DS, 100% right now. (I'm up to the 4th world with 100/100 in every stage so far.) Try completing this one, it's great!
I know we're not supposed to discuss that stuff in depth or anything, but when all is said in done, the Wii can run these games just fine. Haven't actually done the above, but I've seen numerous videos and reports from people that have been able to run Yoshi's Island and other FX games. There could be minor graphical glitches in obscure points of the game, but nothing major to the point where a multi-million dollar company with trained employees can't fix it in a few lazy afternoons. I never got what this Super FX chip rumor was about.
I don't think there's any debate about the Wii's ability to run Super FX games. The problem is that the FX chip was developed by Argonaut Games and not Nintendo. So the rumor is that there is some sort of legal conflict there, or maybe Nintendo doesn't see the advantage in jumping through a hoop or 2 in order to release Yoshi's Island and Star Fox.

That would make considerably more sense than having technical issues; but the game itself is still a Nintendo published game and I'm just a bit put off by that explanation.
I don't see where the conflict would be, though. Yoshi's Island was re-released on the GBA and it's not like the Wii even uses Super FX chip, so what's the deal...? The only explanation I can think of is that they don't want to pay royalties to Argonaut Games or something.
