I've been gaming since the days of the single game Pong consoles. I've played RPG's about Final Fantasies, Breaths of Fire, Chrono Triggers, Lunas and Veys, but for some reason I had never played a Ys game. I have Ys (III?) for the Master System in my closet, but my MS is in storage (I found the cartridge sealed for 2.00 at a garage sale earlier last year).
Yesterday I got a points card for Tomeno Sanner and while waiting for the update, I decided to download Ys Books 1&2. Oh my god, this game is awesome! Yes, it's a bit easy since combat is just running into people and leveling up is easy but to me, that's the best part of RPG's. Usually, I don't like rock soundtracks since they really seem to date the games but this one is just great, it's not cheesy like the newer Sonic games and stands up today (maybe I'm biased since I love 80's hair metal). I also love being able to save at anytime.
Sorry I'm rambling, but it's not often I fimd a gem that I just totally overlooked. Now, I just need to go out and get my SMS and see what the cartridge version I have is like.
So, anyone else here have love for the series? (Oh and as for the pun in the title, I apologize and realize that it's pronounced "ease" )
I am the one you despise. I am he who says what you really deep down know but are affraid to admit. I am the Anti-Fanboy, the crusader of truth in a world built on your lies.
Is it any better than Secret of Mana? Because I have that game and it is really good! SoM is the only Action-RPG I've ever played. I was going to get Ys I&II last Christmas, but it was 800pts, and I thought it was 600. I ended up getting Shining Force.
I downloaded Ys Book I & II last year, and have beaten both games on it 100%. It's not better than Secret of Mana, but it's a good little action-RPG. I liked the last city. It was huge and felt epic with all the things you have to do there. Only the graphics really look 8-bit, since it's a 16-bit remake of two 8-bit games. I would get Ys Book III now when it's available on VC.
Ys Book I & II is a good two-in-one package. And definitely worth playing. Anime cutscenes and voice-acting FTW! Also, you can't go wrong with pushing enemies to slay them. :3
Hmm I better get it. I only played them briefly on the NES and they seemed good. Nothing can really beat Secret of Mana but I don't expect that anymore.
It is an awesome game, I had a lot of fun with it. Still waiting for the net two...

Wanderers from Ys: Ys III is decent, and takes the series in a different direction with a different gameplay, like Zelda II: The Adventure of Link did with the Zelda series. I played the SNES version of Ys III, and I might be one of the few people that likes it slightly more than Ys Book I & II, and I might be one of the few people that likes Zelda II more than Zelda I. As for Ys IV (both SFC and PC-Engine), I've still yet to experience those games.
I think I've replied "Ys Book I & II" on the Universal/VC recommendations thread at least a dozen times combined. Good choice, sir! (also, it's actually pronounced ees, or eece (as in fleece), but I'm sure you already know that, having played the game)
@StarBoy: I will nominate both Adam and myself for the Zelda II > Zelda I club.
Actually, I played both Ys Book I and II and Secret of Mana for the first time through the VC, and I enjoyed Ys much more. Secret of Mana got good later on in the game, but I just didn't really like it and I thought it was very overrated. Ys on the other hand was just as great as I thought it would be. I had been hearing since I was a kid how great it was, and it lived up to all of my expectations. If it wasn't for the VC I would have never played that game probably.

Minus the secret of mana comment (haven't played it) I agree with you all the way. It's a neat little download & I enjoyed every minute of Adol's adventures. It's so good that I bought it twice ... Well bought the VC TG16 & the DS versions anyway. The CD incuded in the DS version plus the fact it's an import that I probably would never see again sealed the deal.
Yeah I had the same feeling when I got Ys 1&2, that I can't believe I never played it before. I am still not too far in the game yet as im trying to finish some others up, but it is really a great experience. And yes the music is some of the best on the VC by far.
@cr00mz - the first half of Ys Book I & II [Ys I] can be beaten in about four-to-five hours at least; the second half [Ys II] takes much longer than that. I find the first half to be easier than the second half.
As for Ys Book I & II, I downloaded it the day it came on the VC. It was very great.
