Topic: Will 2011 be the last good year for Wii?

Every home Nintendo system has typically lasted about 5 years. Then the game releases start slowing down because they are gearing up for the next big system. Since the Wii came out in 2006 we are getting about a year away from the 5 year mark. Is the Wii about dead or do you think it will last longer than usual? I wonder why Sony systems keep kicking well after the next system but Nintendo's don't.
I think they are still making PS2 games are they not?

This year wasn't too bad for Nintendo.

We Did get a New, Mario, Metroid,Kirby, and Donkey Kong game.

That alot in one year.
and next Year we're getting The 3DS and a New Zelda, So theres more to come.

For you, the day LordJumpMad graced your threads, was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday.

The Wii has been a big success, so they might not be as quick to abandon it when they can still milk the system for more game sales, kind of how they milked the NES and GB for so long. I suppose it's possible there won't be as many Wii games to look forward to after 2011 though.

What? Is someone expecting Wii 2 end of next year?

@th14: Possibly. I suspect "Wii 2" will be announced at e3 in 2011 or 2012

Wow, I love Nintendo but still haven't bought a Wii, so will probably do that in January for a bargain, cause I just have to play some of the games for Wii before the successor comes out.

It's a little too early to decide this. Just remember the end of last year. Aside from Super Mario Galaxy 2 and a few others (MHTri TvsC), the beginning of this year was good, but not great, but come E3 and all the sudden we're are having one of the best years for the system. So you might as well just wait and see.

Nintendo has no intention of releasing a new system any time soon. Ninty only makes new consoles when the one they have stops selling, and that hasn't happened quite yet. We still got a while before things go to the pits, and besides, the last 5 years have been pretty good for the PS2 for the niche crowd. Even if things did slow down, chances are we'll still see some of the best games come out on the system.

The Wii has been by far the best selling Nintendo system since the SNES. The only reason N64 and the GC didnt last as long was because they couldnt compete with Sony and MS at the time. Nintendo with the Wii has found something that works mainly the motion technology. It that wasnt the case why did Sony just come out with the Move and MS with the Kinetic. I do believe that the Wii has at least a few more years left in it. Untill Sony and MS announce a new system Nintendo probably wont. Besides they have the 3DS coming next year so all their time and energy are into that now.

My thoughts exactly.

Besides, unless the "trade in Wii to get Wii 2 a lot cheaper" thing comes true, there is pretty much no chance I, or a lot of other people (especially people who remember how much all three current gen consoles sucked until about 2 years ago) would get it anytime soon.

The next system will announced at E3 next year, I bet you anything, and they'll try really hard to make the holidays but won't and come out in March.
At which point Wii sales will have fallen substantially as well at DS/DSi/DSiXL.
3DS will be a big seller but not the amount Nintendo is hoping for (they'll be hoping for DS and Wii level sales) because competition in the mobile smartphone market, specifically with the announcement of the same screen tech going in some Android phones (possibly Iphone) Holiday 2011 or early 2012.

Also Sony will announce the PSP2 at E3 2011 and release holiday 2011. It won't have sales similar to the 3DS but it will be profitable.
They will also announce the PSP Phone and release it early 2011 at see it being quite successful.

Nintendo, Sony, Apple and Android phone makers will ALL be rolling around in money by the end of 2011.

And if I'm wrong at any of this....Meh. lol!

I remember Nintendo wanting to roll with the Wii for a loooong time, even match up the PS2's lifespan.

Last E3 was a total (and very pleasant) surprise, so who knows what this years will deliver. Also, instead of Wii 2, I could see Nintendo releasing some sort of system add-on, similar with the N64 expansion pack.

I hope there isn't a successor to the wii anytime soon. There are still loads of GC, wii, vc and wiiware games I need to get and there aree still many upcoming games to look forward to on the wii.

There are great Wii games coming, or I least they are, anyways, the wii succesor will not come soon, the 3DS is coming, and the Wii still have a long life.

all 3 consoles are looking to stretch this generation a bit. that's why we've seen the recent launch of Move and Kinect. Microsoft even officially stated this at this year's CES.

The Wii is phenomenal, and will still be in production in 2016. We might not see a successor until maybe 2020, but rather a redesigned Wii.

The Wii2 (not a new system, but a redesign) would have the following features:

The ability to transfer accounts from the Wii1.
The ability to transfer all downloads, data, etc from the Wii1 (thus formatting the Wii1)
Updates to account for the Rumble Pak, Memory Pak, and any other peripherals*. The vibration will only be available through the GameCube controller
Twice as much storage space
The ability to move the weather, news, and Mii channels to the SD card.

*These updates will be applied to previously downloaded games upon transfer from the Wii1 (e.g. when Star Fox 64 is transfered to the Wii2, it will be updated to account for the vibration function).

hmmmmmm. id say no. but i hope that a new nintendo home console is released before 2016 (maybe 2014 or 2015 no sooner though). the tech is already getting a bit weak. heck the system was weak compared to other systems when it was released. lets get a powerful system AND innovation next time. i think nintendo might do this because they have been doing a lot more things for hardcore gamers as opposed to casual gamers recently, and hopefuly will follow this trend into the next system and its games.

I doubt this Wii will last til 2016. "Wii 3" will be out by then. Zelda isn't a good indicator of the system lasting longer because Twilight Princess was the final game to be released on the GCN. Nintendo is going to be up against the wall in '11, but like mentioned above, Zelda is coming out and so is that Mario sports game.
