Topic: WiiWare Top List

I'm so glad to see that Dr. Mario Online Rx is still on the list. It's an awesome game and since I've been doing the Dutch list, I have never seen it on there.

It's the oldest WiiWare game on the Top 20. Shows how Nintendo can do Evergreen titles well in the US. I would get it, myself, but I might prefer another puzzler <shrug>

There are 4 games that are over a year running on the WiiWare Top 20 in the US. 2 are Nintendos, one is Tetris, and the other is WoG. I should note, though, that My Aquarium technically counts. So...one fourth of the US Top 20 is games that are over a year (if not close to 1.5 years) old.

Two new games, the return of My Pokémon Ranch and Bit. Trip Void which came out two weeks ago.

• Tetris Party (17 last week)
• Bomberman Blast (20 last week)

Castlevania's climb to the top comes to a sudden halt. Pokémon Rumble wants the top spot back and climbs from 4 to 2. No other big climbers to speak of. Two spots won by TV Show King 2 (11 to 9) and Rabbids Lab (16 to 14).

There are some big droppers though. Excitebike is the biggest with five spots from 14 to 19. Other notable droppers are Tales of Monkey Island Chapter 5 with three spots from 10 to 13 and of course Castlevania: The Adventure Rebirth (as mentioned earlier).

Strike-Outs (3 weeks of no appearance on Top 20):
Happy Hammerin (Agenda/Gamebridge): While the game appeared to have some sort of cute factor tied into the game, the gameplay did not appear to be something for most gamers. Use the pointer and use hammer motions at the same time? Seems rather hard to do for accuracy, from what I see.The game got mixed reviews, and combined with its release at the same week as Mega Man 10, and you have a game sent to die. Maybe next time.

Drop-outs (Fell out of the Top 20 this week):
Pub Darts (Big Blue Bubble): Pub Darts was a first game of its kind on WiiWare, and it did well as a result. It stayed on the top 20 for 9 Weeks before being knocked down, and for a few obvious reasons. While it was seen as a very poor title by reviewers, gamers purchased it in order to have that Dart fix. When JV Games' much superior title Dart Rage came out, though, it stole its sales quickly. With nothing to fall back on, Pub Darts simply faded away.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Justice for All (Capcom): I think it should be no surprise that this game left the Top 20 quickly by now. While it started off better than its predecessor, it dropped just as quickly if not faster from the Top 20 rankings. Seriously, it came out a week after the original dropped from the Top 20. For one, the game was a port of a port, in a way. Secondly, people who really really wanted PW probably already got it, so it was not a huge sales booster. Finally, those that are new to the series were either turned off by the first game or haven't finished the first, yet. So, the sales are close but lessor than the prequel.

Compared to Last Year:
This past year saw the release of one of WiiWare's most memorable titles: Bit.Trip Beat. The game is very much neck-and-neck with this week's release of Rage of the Gladiator, though the other difference is the inclusion of one more title this year (but if IGN's capsule review can be believed, it is horrid!). So, despite RotG's somewhat higher scores to BTB, I think last year wins because of the lack of a poor-game stain. So...a tie? Thoughts?

Three new games this week. Muscle Mars takes the number four spot which is a big surprise (I guess we dutch are more weird then I thought). We also see the return of Onslaught and Max & The Magic Marker.

This spells the end for:

Biggest climber is Family Slot Car Racing with six spots from 16 to 10.

Dracula: Undead Awakening (Chillingo): I tell you, IPhone games seem to be appearing in the oddest places now...or rather, they keep appearing in WiiWare! Here we see an overhead shooter where you shoot zombies until you die. That's the gist of it. For 1000 points. It got okay reviews and the like, but this month seems crammed with more interesting titles. An IPhone port at a higher-than-necessary price point certainly is not the best thing to come out around innovating big titles.:

Drop-Outs (Games that appeared on the Top 20 and then feel off)
Castlevania: The Adventure Rebirth (M2/Konami) 13 Weeks: Castlevania is definitely a series to follow, filled with lots of action and awesome soundtracks and environments. The Rebirth series is also a series to follow, complete with old-style graphics with that old-school gameplay that has been missing these past few game generations. Castlevania is the third Rebirth title, and while it did not perform as well as Contra Rebirth on the charts, many see it as the best Rebirth title thus far. It did very well for itself, but I think it could have done better had it come out for Halloween. The slew of new hardcore titles and Dracula X eventually felled this demon.

Bloons (Ninja Kiwi/Hands-On Mobile) 6 Weeks: An IPhone port that has meh controls and comprises of mostly "guess and check" gameplay mechanics. I assure you, the game's price point did it wonders, combined with the aesthetic. The game did well enough, but it has been hovering at the bottom of the Top 20 for a good portion of that time, so its sales are probably not as good as they may appear. Seriously, this should have been a DSiWare title. Is it?

Compared to Last Year:
Hudson released a 500 point puzzle game Pop'Em Drop'Em Same Game a Year ago. If I have to compare it with Cave Story, I'm not sure what sanity I've lost. Both games are recommended, but there's no comparison. This Year was better.

Three new games. Art of Balance is the highest newcomer at number 7 (great game, I bought it too). Diner Dash, which also came out last week, enters at 16 and Tales of Monkey Island Chapter 5 re-enters the list at 19 (after leaving last week).

My Zoo (Hudson) 17 Weeks: My Aquarium is perhaps Hudson's most sold WiiWare title to date, and seeing that, they decided to cash in on the sales with a semi-sequel involving more animals and more caring for the animals. Whereas My Aquarium is pretty much an aquarium with some simulation mixed in, My Zoo is more animal simulation with "watch the animals" sprinkled in. It was given a higher score on NintendoLife as a result of the more game-y experience, but IGN gave it a worse one, calling it out on poor design choices for a title. In the end, the game's larger price tag, DLC animals, and non-fish-oriented game experience probably combined to cause an end to this game's run on the Top 20. I'm sure it did well enough, though.

Compared to Last Year:
Bonsai Barber was the big game this week a year ago, and with WarioWare DIY Showcase and Diner Dash in cahoots, it is hard for me to say. What do you think?

Three new games this week. Zombie Panic in wonderland, which came out last week, is the highest newcomer at number 11. I bought it too and I'm glad to see it doing well. We see the return of TV Show King and LostWinds: Winter of the Melodias.

We have a partially new top 3. Family Mini Golf climbs five spots to number 2 and Uno re-enters the top 3 from number 4. Family Mini Golf is our biggest climber and so is My Pokémon Ranch with five spots from 11 to 6. The biggest dropper is Mega Man 10 and Muscle Mars, both with five spots.

I say than this week came with a very good recovery for World of Goo, for it climbed 6 spots; on the other hand, Cave Story has lost so much spaces in the las two weeks, even when the critics speak highly about it.
