I don't think so. When you get down to it, it's very similiar to the 360, which had already been on the market for a year. It's fairly impressive hardware, but it's really just more of the same with prettier graphics. Sony had completely dominated for 2 straight generations. I think it was time for them to get knocked off their high horse and get a little reality check.

Sales vs quality games, the PS3 is underrated.

@jumpmad. without shigeru and nintendo, we wouldn`t probably be discussing video games at all.
if what i`ve read is true, the video games crash of the 80's nearly killed it for everybody, if it wasn`t for the NES i don`t know where we would all be (probably going out, socialising and/or getting some exersise).
anyways, nintendo have always had pretty good consoles regardless of how powerfull they may be. i just wish that 3rd party support was be a whole lot better.

Not entirely true. Sega's master system was released only 7 months after the NES in the US and had been out since 85' in Japan. It's lack of success was mostly due to Nintendo's video game monopoly that ultimately had to be broken in the courts and at least in the 90's, Sega had some success We'd still have games, it would have just gone another route. Plus, I lived through the crash and there was never a time we didn't have games.

The Wii may be the most successful Nintendo console but I don't really care that much about Wii (besides Virtual Console of course) compared to other Nintendo consoles. I have bought every Nintendo system since Gameboy and SNES (owning only two console mady by Nintendo's competitors: PS2 and Xbox360). Nintendo has great success thanks to Wii sales but I would have preferred a powerful HD-console made by Nintendo over a Gamecube 1.5 with motion controls anytime. So I hardly use my Wii for retail games (playing Virtual Console for most of the time) since I have a Xbox 360. The Wii just doesn't hold the same fascination for me like SNES or Nintendo64 did. Maybe Nintendo will convince me in the next generation but I will definitely stay multiplatform in the future.

@jumpmad Actually you are forgetting one big thing that really caused the NES to break through. See, Nintendo wanted Atari to distribute it in America and by that time the Atari name was almost worthless. Atari turned them down in favor of releasing their own Atari 7800. If Atari had released the NES under the Atari banner, chances are it would've sold, but been forgotten because they would've F'd it up somehow like the owners at the time had a habit of doing.

So really, the rejection by and simply not being an Atari product is what saved the industry in the long run.

I am the one you despise. I am he who says what you really deep down know but are affraid to admit. I am the Anti-Fanboy, the crusader of truth in a world built on your lies.
