Review scores for the most part are pretty pointless, even when comparing between different sites as they all tend to use different rubrics. Also, the definitions of the scores are open to interpretation by the reviewer. Two reviewers could say virtually the same thing about a game but give it different final scores because they interpret the rubric differently. The best way to find out if a game is worth the money is to read the text of the review.
Totally agree with you there, but how many gamers (those that don't frequent a variety of gaming sites and research games) out there actually read the review, sadly many just look at the score and that's it.
I stopped caring about what some idiot, who really has know idea what a game is, thinks. I've seen reviews that were all praise for the game, everything was great, but maybe they didn't like the music, so the game got scored a 6/10..... So not liking the music justifies taking 4 points off a game that you just got done saying was perfect in every other aspect?
I also got tired of these morons bashing a sequel because it's "more of the same" then bash a game because "it's too different from the original" Do you want it to be different or the same? make up your mind.
Also don't say a game is bad because it has no Wii motion controls, then bash a game because it has Wii motion controls.
When reviewing a retro game, STOP COMPARING IT TO CURRENT TITLES!!!!!!! This one just drives me insane, no NES game is going to play like any game made today, so don't compare Super Mario Bros to Super Mario Galaxy, & rate your score on that. Rate the game on if the game itself is fun, not if it's as fun as something else.
& finally, graphics do not make a game!!!!! I don't know how many games I've played that have had the best graphics at the time, & the game was horrible. & then played a game with bad graphics, but the game was some of the most fun I ever had. Stop giving & taking away points for graphics, the main thing you should be reviewing is if the game is fun, not if it looks pretty, cause after you get over the graphics, if the game is not fun, you just have pretty garbage.
Flandre Scarlet, she's cute, she's colorful, she can blow up entire cities, she's also a vampire. Start running sparklepants.
-PunchOut!! (One of the best titles this generation)
I wholeheartedly agree. Finally, another believer! (It was probably marked down for being a remake with little in the way of new content, I presume.)
So there are Punch-Out fans here! Yeah Punch-Out Wii is one of the best games of this generation, but because it's on Wii it gets overlooked.
That's sad but true, I also think many people didn't understand Punchout!! they expected it to be a straight fighting game like street fighter or fight night, so they never really gave it a chance. At least we love it though.

And it is because of that that Nintendo plugged its motion controls in a SNES and Nintendo current games are the SNES ones, err... ...wait, SNES died in favour of better graphics, N64 died in favour of better graphics and even NGC died too and the resulting console was aiming to have also better graphics.
gameplay, graphics, music, sounds and controls make a game. Just image your "perfect world" with quite enjoyable games, all with black and white wireframed graphics.

I think you're taking him a little too literally. I think the point that he was trying to make was that while it's important for a game to look half-decent, it can still be a good game without top-notch graphics.
I for one don't judge my game purchases, or the quality of games, on reviews BUT many gamers out there do. The thing that concerns me is that Wii games (regardless of how good they are) seem to be really harshly reviewed (marked down for minor flaws that would be passed on other systems). This reinforces the misconception that instead of the selection of 9/10 scoring titles the Wii actually has, its instead a "kiddie" console having only 7/8/9 scoring games available. This may not seem too bad for those of us who actually know how good the selection of games is BUT like I said earlier many rely on word of mouth, IGN and metacritic to decide their game purchases AND low scores on these means that many gamers (both core and casual) overlook excellent Wii titles and spread untruth that the Wii has no games. This in turn means many 3rd party and some 1st party titles aren't as profitable as they should be and in the worst case scenario less are made and we all suffer.
Titles that should have scored higher:
-PunchOut!! (One of the best titles this generation) -Dead Space Extraction (should not have been marked down just because of its genre) -Fifa 10 (Should have been scored as a stand alone title not a continuation of the FIFA series)
these are just a few off the top of my head.
Rant over, discuss
so, essentially your point is 'I rarely agree with reviewers?'

Lol, what? No, my point is that reviewers unfairly harsh reviews, reinforce the wrong idea that there are no good Wii games, when in fact if Wii games were reviewed more accurately more people (e.g. those who rely heavily on game scores for purchases whether this be due to lack of time, money or internet prowess) would realise how good a software catalogue the Wii actually has.

What? There's only a few Punch-Out!! fans? Well, you can count me on the list of people that love that game.
I'm sure there are plenty of Punchout!! fans but because the game was released early in the year many people seem to have forgotten it, we're just glad it still has a place in gamers hearts as they can be a fickle lot you know, lol

Hellz yeah! Love me some Punchout!! Its one of my main reasons for owning a Wii (anything that came before or afterwards was/is just icing on the cake lol) I love it because its reminds me exactly why I love Nintendo, great graphics, fun simple gameplay, an awesome sense of humour, and can be "pick up and play" or really deep if you want it to be! A true masterpiece IMO! Great to see a likeminded gamer!
Funny you should say we're like-minded, because I couldn't have said the above better myself. I should point out I had never played a Punch-Out!! game before I experienced the one for Wii, but I can say I was instantly "hooked". (Lame pun, I know.) I prefer the classic control style, though. I also have Doc Louis's Punch-Out!! and something awesome I will be sure to let you know of when I make a topic about it.

Just saying 'yes' would have been sufficient.
Why say one word when you can say ten, lol

I would call most sites that make fair reviews for the Wii. Of course we have exceptions such as Game Informers sometimes (I know Modern Warfare: Reflex isn't as good as the HD counterpartners, but it doesn't deserve just a 6.5).

Yeah, I guess your right. Independent sites seem to do a good job, although I wish reviewers would a mark a title based on art direction rather that graphical prowess, because I think this is where many Wii games lose marks although there are many titles I think should score 8/9 for visuals compared to what else is available for the Wii, I no we all know the Wii can do better but there are a lot of good looking Wii games out there.

Seems to be nothing more than a fanboy BAWWW thread, moving along.
Wow, that was a pretty ignorant statement to make, although this is the internet so we shouldn't be surprised. In fact this thread was designed to stimulate a mature discussion, whether the point I made in the beginning was right or wrong doesn't matter, it was to be debated over. Sadly the idea of a mature debate seems to be over your head and if you thought this thread was unnecessary why post?

i think some of you guys are starting to purposely try to find errors with wii reviewers just to give excuses for its low grades ... dont kill me
I think some people will use it as an excuse, but when a game that clearly deserves more than it receives is marked down for no good reason, and is as a result put into the "not good enough to buy" category (for the gamers I mentioned earlier) don't we (those who may have enjoyed the game and may be looking forward to a sequel or continuation of a franchise) have the right to complain a little?

Well its all a matter of opinion, i like some games that reviewers hate, but its just our taste in games and how much we care about gameplay/graphics. no ones wrong, they just have different likes and dislikes

GameInformer is particularly bad about reviewing Nintendo games fairly...I'm still mad about the 5.5 they game Mario Super Sluggers, not to mention the 6 for Chibi Robo or the 7 for Metroid Prime Trilogy (a score that makes NO sense WHATSOEVER, given that they actually DID give Prime 3 a 10). I frequently see DS and Wii games get about two points higher on NLife than in most multisystem publications, and I tend to find it's because the games really are that good, not because we inflate scores. All NLife does is NOT try to compare Nintendo games with games on other consoles...which ALL reviewers should be doing.
