Thought I'd buy one of these since I've started playing more and more wii and the battery's get used like there's no tomorrow.. But I dunno, got a few problems.

Why does the console have to be on when charging? Can I charge it through my computers USB instead without harming the wiimotes?
And why won't it charge when the wrist straps are on, doesn't fit with them. Or did I just buy a bad charger stand? It's the one from Gametech.

I have the Nyko charger and the console doesn't need to be on whilst charging.
It has no USB cable just a normal plug.
I pull the strap underneath the wiimote so it hangs out the front, when I place it on the charger.

They seem similar apart from having to have the Wii on, that sucks dude.

Oh, the Nyko has nice grippy bits on the battery cover too, which I have grown quite fond of.

I don't have this one from Gametech, but I have a similair one.

  • The controller has to be on (or on stand bye (yellow light)). The Wii only gives power in those two modes so it wil only charge then.
  • Mine also got a USB cable so I have connected mine to my laptop. Whenever my laptop is on, I can charge it.
  • When the wriststraps are on, the controllers can't connect to the charger so you have to take them off.

Personally, I would go with Nyko Charger.

That is a far more effiective product, I recommend selling your Gametech charger in favor of the Nyko.

on the larger topic of charger discussion, we bought a Nyko charger back when we first bought our Wii, and it finally died (the battery packs both stopped charging properly/would absolutely not hold a charge anymore no matter what we tried) this past May or so... we got about two years' worth of use out of it, i'd say, since we got the thing back in mid '07. anyone else have any idea how long these chargers are supposed to last? I haven't bothered buying a new one yet because we had a giant pack of AAs laying around that had barely been touched, but if there's a charger set that'll last longer than two years, i'd like to hear about it. :3

also, with the Nyko charger, you can have the wrist-strap attached, you just have to make sure it's positioned right when you set the wiimote back on the charger so that the contacts are all touching properly.

Eeek, I didn't know that. I've had my Nyko charger for 2 years too, but then I use four wii-motes so I guess the battery life is being extended. Still not good to hear that they will give in eventually.

I was looking into buying a Wiimote charging dock about a year ago, but had heard a few story's about them not working or even frying peoples Wiimotes, I also checked some customer reviews for various docks and from all the units I checked there were at least a few bad reviews. Because of this I decided to go the traditional route and bought myself a normal battery charger a few pairs of rechargeable batteries so I can charge some whilst using the others. I haven't had any problems with this method and also I wasn't keen on having a different back piece instead of the original battery cover so this was the best option for me.

I just use rechargable batteries, because I can use them for something else besides the Wii if I need too. Better value in my opinion.

Yeah, i thing it was my charger that killed one of my Wiimotes, so I'll just use rechargable batteries in the future.

I use the Psyclone Esentialls 2 wiimote recharger. I like it a lot.

I have some cheap unknown brand for 15 bucks. It loads pretty fast (and I just realise that I don't have to remove the straps), but I do notice that they empty pretty fast. An hours of five playtime and that's it. But I normally don't play that long in a row and my laptop is always on so it can load up pretty quick.

@sak904 I have some really powerful rechargable batteries, I doubt that those chargers can beat them.

Mine were cheap ones from Netto (for US peeps Netto is a very cheap but cheerful supermarket in the UK, they claim it means 'Scandinavian for Value' but im not too sure if that is a literal translation) Anyway I have used them for about 1 year now and still get around 10 hours life from them, as I mentioned I have a spare set I have charged ready to use as soon as the one's in my Wiimote die, and I alternate like that.

Netto in swedish is "net" in english. Example: the company's net proceeds (profit, result) after tax.

About batteries.. just go for maximum mAh (milliAmpereHours). Best I´ve seen for R6 batteries is 3000mAh. I have 2600mAh batteres, they last loooong. I have seen some sad excuses for batteries in those charging docks. Beware. Some even sums up the batteries mAh wich is not true. It only gets as good as the worst.

Damn, I thought I could trust the women on the advert, she did have blonde hair, a viking helmet and horn.

I imagine it's just a motto, kind of like how Foster's is "Australian for beer."
As for me, I just bought a 36-pack of Rayovacs and they've lasted me over 2 years already.

Hey Faxanduman, stop putting words into my mouth, I've never bought Rayovacs, I don't even know what they are

Ye, it is just a motto, another case of sarcasm not purveying well over the interweb

Very strange, I could have sworn I put the Rayovac comment underneath my other comment.
Rayovacs are generic batteries - they're just as good as name-brand batteries but they are dirt cheap (and you usually get "12 more free!" when you buy a 24(36)-pack).

I got an Energizer Induction charger for my wiimotes. It seems to work great, and while it takes a while to charge, the batteries have been lasting awhile after each charge. I would recommend it for sure.
