Somebody's awfully tetchy today... no need to shout, I'm just making a point. The last few Mario Party games haven't been very good, bar the sole DS installment, so the way I see it, Wii Party is the natural replacement for Mario Party. Granted, we could well see one on the 3DS if Nintendo wants to try it out on a new platform, but I think that franchise is done and dusted now.
Did you read the Iwata Asks article on Wii Party? Much to my surprise, it was created by exactly the same people who have been running the Mario Party series all along. They are no longer with Hudson it seems, perhaps instead having been split off into a separate development company owned by Nintendo, but it's the same crew nonetheless.
In other words, Wii Party really is the next iteration of the Mario Party franchise, but Nintendo saw flagging interest in Mario Party and decided that the Miis would be a better fit for the wider family audience. Who knows what will come next, but certainly these guys haven't been working on another Mario Party yet, as they just finished this game.

Speaking as a former Mario Party enthusiast (own 1-6), the more recent ones have been less creative and actually re-used older mini-games (stares at MP7). I understand that Nintendo is marketing more towards the "Casual" market, but the Wii market is already flooded with shovel-ware, and the convenience of WiiWare makes the gap THAT much smaller. The series has lost its original N64 charm, and its not like they can flood the market (already flooded), releasing one every year, like they did in the GCN years. I for one, have lost nearly all hope in the series and see it as nothing more than a money-making pet of Nintendo.
I'd also like to add that Mario Party 6 was the greatest of the post-N64 releases, and perhaps my favorite entry overall.
@shinesprite - I had the same reaction to MP7 at first, but came to enjoy it with the right group of friends playing along. MP8, on the other hand, was generally pretty disappointing even with fun-loving groups of players.

#4 was my favorite. never was attracted by the capsule/candy system. Thought they were running out of Ideas when they kept adding boards that were more like modes. Still fun mind you.
I played every MarioParty game there is. but not 9 or the DS one.
