I find it a bit hard, but I haven't played it long enough to know yet though to say.

Multiplayer is pretty fun, you sort of compete to make your void bigger than your friends but eventually shrink either by hitting white bits or by pressing A. The drawbacks to multiplayer include the B button, which produces sound that can really mess with the rhythm. As far as I’m concerned, if someone gets a challenge bit it will only affect them, especially in 1-3 where your direction gets reversed at the worst possible time!

Ray, I haven't had time to test the multiplayer yet...if one player fails, the level ends, right? The others don't get to keep playing, do they?

Also, are the scores separate this time around?

Why do you want to get your Void bigger? Do you get more points by staying large longer?

Yeah if one fails everyone fails, but it’s quite funny though since you don’t want to be the one that gets the challenge bit and go though 20 or so white bits on accident.
@Adam: Yeah you get more points the longer you are bigger (assuming you don't miss the black bits).

This is a game that should have a demo, instead of five older games (three of which I already have.) I want to try it but money is tight... If there was a demo, you guys wouldn't have to answer so many questions!

Is it just me, or is there a really strong Bit Boy vibe coming from the second boss? I'm surprised it didn't take them much longer to develop this game given the influence.

That boss did indeed take 50 times more work to develop than the entirety of any previous Bit Trip game.

I beat the game last night. I think it is the easiest of all of them (the checkpoints make it much easier to get through), although the last level is a big increase in challenge over the first two levels. I thought all the bosses in the game were great, whereas I really only liked the first boss in Beat and the first two bosses in Core.

Got it. Played it. It's good. I think while you will be able to beat the levels easier, the high scores is where the replay here will come. The game's style is entirely mixed in with the menus, and that alone makes it superior art-wise over the previous two. The music is on par with the series, though I feel that nothing has surpassed Core Level 3's music yet. This one feels more relaxed than the previous two, and at the same time, the game puts you on edge as a result.

The game has gotten higher reviews from both IGN and Gamespot, probably due to the control aspects. Still complaints about online leaderboards, which I feel would have probably forced the game to a higher price.

Anyways, I lost to the final boss, doing something stupid, and I sucked hard enough score-wise that I only had one credit which I had used earlier. So, I'll get back to that soon enough. Enjoyed it thus far, but I like Core better. I think the Bit.Trip series in general is the type of series whose difficulties and enjoyment depends on the player. Some who played pong-style games will like Beat, those who like digital hand-eye coordination and music games will go to Core, and those into more free-moving games with a bit more SHMUP gameplay will like Void. All of the games are good; the player will determine which is better for them.

Adam

Online leaderboards, whoopty do. That sort of thing is a lot of time, money, and effort for small teams just to please the top few fans while the rest couldn't care less how low on the rankings they are. IGN seems obsessed with the concept for some reason.

Does anyone know if there is an advantage to keeping your void large? It's easier to just shrink it all the time, but there doesn't seem to be any penalty for this. Can anyone confirm?

I'm not that narcissistic. I like the "I am only a man" line. It prevents unnecessary confusion. I'm sure people confuse me with some supernatural entity beyond man's power to comprehend all the time.

This game would not function at all with pointer controls. The speed of the Void doesn't nearly match the speed with which one would flick the cursor around, and as the void grows larger it slows down, which is something that pointer controls wouldn't be able to do. (Not without feeling completely broken, at least, thereby defeating the purpose of pointer control at all.)

Pointer control simply wouldn't suit the game that they've made. Could it potentially suit a different Bit Trip game? One that was designed around it? Yes, definitely.

But not this one. The control stick is a perfect fit.

I'm generally not a fan of games that require the control stick, but this is definitely one of those exceptions. I'd have loved to see D-pad support, myself, with speed increasingly gradually as you hold in one direction, but I'm more than satisfied with this.

Anyway, I just finished the game. The last boss is not necessarily hard (unless you accidentally run into the boss itself, as I did a couple times), but it's still really cool and inventive, as Bit Trip bosses always are. I love how they use the bosses to take one genre or game and completely recreate it within their own game's concepts and structure. If they ever release a Bit Trip compilation disc, I'd buy all the games again if they include a boss rush mode.

The last cut scene is pretty neat, too, following the credits. Sort of hints at what is to come with the second half of the series, it seems. All I have to say is, I am ready.
