This is the same as https://www.nintendolife.com/forums/wiiware/wiiware_essentials except this time, it's with VC games. Nintendo decides to preload every new Wii with 5000 pts. of Virtual Console software and in a stroke of genius they consult us, the readers of Nintendolife, to determine what "essential" games to include. So what are your recommendations? (Try to stay around 5000 pts.)
I recommend Star Parodier and DoReMi Fantasy: Milon's DokiDoki Adventure to every gamer, shmup/cute'em up fans, and/or platformer fans. They are that fantastic.
Donkey Kong Country 800pts Super Mario World 800pts Sonic The Hedgehog 800pts Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past 800pts Super Punch Out 800 pts Super Mario 64 1000pts
Exactly 5000pts and I think it shows good games from the more popular franchises. And because of that, fans are more likely to pick up the sequels and earlier releases.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1000) Casltevania X: Rondo of Blood (when it comes out) (900) Super Mario 64 (1000) Super Mario RPG (800) Ys: Books 1 & 2 (800) Super Mario Bros. 3 (500)

One thing about Mega Man 2: don't download it if you have a PAL Wii. Seriously, don't. I love MM2, but the PAL version is just unplayable because of the sound issues.
Other than that, I also recommend:
Mega Man 3 Super Mario 64 Super Metroid A Link to the Past Super Mario World Super Mario Bros. 3
It's like, I just love a cowboy
You know
I'm just like, I just, I know, it's bad
But I'm just like
Can I just like, hang off the back of your horse
And can you go a little faster?!
I'd recommend these as essentials: Sonic 2 Super Mario 64 Super Mario Bros 3 Street fighter Alpha 2 Legend of Zelda: A link to the Past Star Parodier
I'd like and wish to include more of a variety of genres (maybe a puzzle game in there) because that's what Nintendo would do, I think. But those are my essentials in a 5000 point limit anyway. The first five are popular games, but Star Parodier might be overlooked by Nintendo as it might be too niche for more mainstream tastes with it being an import title. Still, essential in my book nevertheless.
If I had to go by quality, accessibility, and variety of genre, the choice would be easy:
Super Mario World Super Mario Kart Super Metroid Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers A Link to the Past Paper Mario
However, it depends on what Nintendo's hypothetical goal is here. Are they using these "essentials" to market the Wii itself or rather the Wii Shop Channel? If it's just to sell the Wii, those are definitely good names to have on the box. But if it's to try to get people to log into the shop channel more, that's a tough one. You'd want a mix of lesser known games to encourage the consumer to look into all that's on offer at the shop channel, but they would have to be accessible games. For such a list, I would probably use:
Adventures of Lolo (NES - 500), Zombies Ate My Neighbors (SNES - 800), Gunstar Heroes (Genesis - 800), Fatal Fury 2 (Neo Geo - 900), New Adventure Island (TG16 - 600), Phantasy Star (Master System - 500), Shinobi (Arcade - 800).
Leaves 100 points left over, but it hits a large variety of platforms and genres, chosen from the highest ranking games on this site, so they should hopefully be quality games (haven't played them all myself) that should wet the appetite of any potential retro gamer, making him want to log on and find more.
Of course, in either deal, Nintendo better package in a classic controller or this exercise will be kind of difficult, haha.
I think those of you listing one or two games are missing the points. The idea is to list 5000 points worth of games that ought to be preloaded on a Wii in this hypothetical scenario, not just recommending one or two random games you happen to like.

I actually think the only must-have game on Virtual Console is Ocarina of Time. And maaaybe Super Metroid.
Fine and dandy, I'm not challenging your opinion there, but that's still not the point, I don't think...

Note that when he does say "essentials" it's in quotes for a reason -- not literal essentials. But the above quote is the important part. Ocarina of Time is not "around 5000 points."
I think it's more interesting this way than simply stating your favorite games. The idea is to try to pick out what would be the best 5000 points worth of VC games for a new Wii owner, not literal "must-haves," as that would just be another boring favorites list.
@Adam - at least you're not harsh and/or mean about it. Very well, here's a total of 5000 Wii Points:
Gate of Thunder (800 Wii Points) Star Parodier (900 Wii Points) Ys Book I & II (800 Wii Points) Mario Kart 64 (1000 Wii Points) Columns (800 Wii Points) Detana!! TwinBee (700 Wii Points)
I am shoot 'em up fan myself but I had to restrain myself to only include on on the list above. I think Nintendo would have don this by now if they thought it would genuinely attract new owners to the VC Wii shop and it would have been more like a 2000 point (two or three games) realistically. It might have only been Nintendo published games as well.
And like what was said above they would need to pack in a classic controller to play most of the games people are recommending (Can't see that ever happening). Still it is a nice hypothetical scenario. I hope the ambassador program has been successful in attracting more genuine interest in the Wii shop Channel, as a whole, with new owners repeatedly buying on the channel rather than just a one off purchase.
