Nintendo is up for another big holiday, both Wii and DS....
Its a fun time of year to enjoy gaming. Good for Nintendo they havce earned it. It is nice that one company does not throw away the plug and play console model in favor of the PC console model. And it is no surprise that company is Nintendo, and no surprise they are enjoying unheardof market success because of it.

it sounds impressive, but all it really means is that they've restored their sales to the levels they were at last year. (they were down by 50% before the price cut)
the cut isn't something to boost the wii's sales higher than before, it's something that's necessary to maintain the same level of sales as before. more proof that the wii has lost some steam in the face of competition and nintendo are going to have to release a new system soon to remain #1
I think releasing a new console would be a mistake, at least for the time being, people are still buying the wii and in large numbers, and that is with the current economic conditions being as they are, add to that both Microsoft and Sony have stated their console will last a lot longer than the standard 5 year cycle and Nintendo has no incentive to go with new hardware right now, they should be concentrating on the successes they have now, they even have a few peripherals yet to release so the wii has years of life yet IMO.

Yeah -
unless you are fair and thoughtful, and state that salkes momentum of Wii last year was out of this world and they have been the only console this gen to keep that pace....
We have seen sales spikes before, but this will not be as pronounced as the PS3 cut, this one will likely roll through Christmas and beyond - its the software baby!

Not to put a dampener on things, but do keep in mind that these are preliminary figures from none other than VGChartz. They're not exactly the most reliable source for data. Not that I don't believe that Wii sales have skyrocketed. I just think that VGChartz's numbers always need to be taken with a grain of salt.

does that change the fact that sales are still down by half this year? however well they did in 2008, that success didn't carry over into this 2009. it's still selling very well, better than the competition and it will continue to do so for the time being, but that doesn't change the fact that little by little sales are decreasing while sony's are climbing; this has been the best year for the PS3 so far. i think sony's motion wand is a silly rip off of the wii remote, but either way it doesn't help nintendo any to know that sony will have the wii remote available for their system soon as well. do you honestly think the PS3 poses no threat to the wii in the coming year or so? even considering that it's already been outselling the wii in japan?
microsoft and sony are invested too deep into their systems to make another one anytime soon; from what i've read they're probably just on the verge of finally making a profit. nintendo is the only company in a position to design a new system and it seems more likely than not that they'll do it in order to keep their lead over the competition. you have the rumors from developers that it already exists, the huge R&D budget, analyst after analyst saying it will happen, the partnership with IBM and AMD expiring in 2011...
you don't have to get defensive as if i'm attacking the wii, i love it and just bought one myself. i wouldn't have done that if i didn't think it had some life left in it. i'm just saying that being the most innovative and inspired console with (in my opinion) the funnest games doesn't guarantee that the wii will always sell the best.
@Topic - About time--Wii has been overpriced since day 1. I can't believe people were willing to pay $250 for this thing years after creation; especially when the other two consoles were so close in price. Yeah it has some fun games, but it's a mostly first-party/Sega system and the memory "solution" (that SD card joke) is an insult. The SD card memory transfer should have been in effect since launch and the Wii should've added a hard drive at some point and kept the price 250. I feel like Nintendo worked so much harder during the GC/early Wii days and now they're sitting back, enjoying the money printing. That's all well and good--I just hope Nintendo doesn't mind me playing PS3 considerably more often now.

I don't really think there's any surprise here. And the fun part is that Nintendo is still making money off each system, even after the price drop, which is unusual for a game console.

Wait, this hasn't been announced yet? I saw it on Amazon a couple days ago.

Mt response :
Why does the Wii need a hard drive again?
I have probably a dozen games on the system memory and another 10,000 blocks available on a $10 sd card. How convinent and affordable is that, really? I do not want to pay for a harddrive, am glad I am not saddled with one.
I am sure Nintendo does not mind you playing PS3- it is a free country afterall. I do not believe they design their products with any one perosn in mind. Suit your self..?
Check out my GC/Wii Nintendo published games topic on the retro board - were they really 'working harder' in the GC days???
I do nott hink Wiiw as overpriced at day one, or now. It came preloaded and packaged with software - why should consoels have to be sold at a massive loss to be 'fair priced' Foolishness. Sony and MS dug themselves into holes, good for them, but that is hardly the industry standard to see multiarmed companies blunder about for market share and profit in the game industry.
Nintendo has been named the best company in the world - not GAME company, company PERIOD. That is amazing for them as they are focused completely to just gaming. Your complaints seem odd to me.

I'm a 2D cowboy, so I have no reason to compare GCN and Wii titles much, both libraries being equally lacking for me. But I will add to the SD vs. Hard Drive conversation.
SD card works fine for me, too. I agree that the late addition of this solution is ridiculous though. How long could it possibly have taken to program this? They just automated something that users were already doing for convenience. It could have been and should have been available from the get-go. But no worries now. Water under the bridge. I have seven pages full of games on SD, and many pages left to go. SD cards are cheap. The only lasting impact of the lack of hard drives is that WiiWare file sizes are limited, but personally I don't see that this has caused a huge enough problem to justify the extra price of adding in a hard drive.
The funny thing is, I never play games off of the sd card anyway.
I mean, I play a game and get into it, so I want it on page one. It does not take long to shuffle the deck, as it were. It is nice for direct download, though. I am glad to have that SD backup for all wii files and saves. Also for picture channel, that is a nice little program as well.
