I LOVE Super Mario 64. Ever since I played it when I was a kid,it was and will always be one of my favorite games of all time. I think it is one of the greatest video games of all time.
LOVE LOVE LOVE ! It may not be as good as Super Mario Galaxy, or even Sunshine, but I still agree with the fact that it's a game which will remain legendary throughout gaming history
Currently playing: Wii + GC - House of the dead: overkill, Guitar hero world tour, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Mario Galaxy, Eternal darkness: sanitys requiem DS - Final fantasy 4, Rhythm paradise, Pokemon platinum, GTA:CTW. VC + WiiWare - Icarian, Lostwinds, Zelda: Maj..
It was great then. A bit dated now. I still like it, but I could surely live without it. Fair warning, I am about to sound like an old fart. A few areas that I was disappointed in:
No 2-player mode (how hard would this have been?).
Mario shines best in linear levels, which the game had few of. Bowser's levels were and still are awesome though.
Power-ups don't belong on timers, and you should be able to carry them over to other levels.
The hub castle is a lot of fun, but it gets old eventually. I wish they'd implement an optional level quick-start menu in future games for when you want to pick up and play for just a few minutes.
The camera was innovative for its time, but far from perfect. Galaxy fortunately corrected this.
I was never into 3d platform games. I got it on the ds and hated it. Too frustrating to control. Then I tried Galaxy which single handedly made me reevaluate my opinion of 3d platformers. I downloaded Mario 64 on the vc and now love it.

they were originally gona have 2 player but they got rid of it
You could hang-out and play around without time-up limit. I love that in front of Peach's Castle.
Flying around in 3D realized environment.
Mesmerized with wimsical and eerily fun music.
Select, skip, hinted surprise Course Levels.
Addition of speaking and any kind of dialogue other than 'your Princess is in another castle.'
Nintendo 64 console and controller experience.
Ending music.
Super Mario 64 may have been my first Virtual Console download.
Wall-jumps, back-flips, hand-stands, long-jump, ground-pound, crotch, crawling, Red/Blue coins, Power Stars and diving, side-jump, second-jump, triple-jump, sliding, punching, kicking and so on even now familiar and common and even expected for a Mario game...
I think it was a better concept than it was a game.
The good stuff: The music was top notch, and, unlike Adam, I thought the wide-open areas with multiple paths toward multiple goals were great. It really set the bar high for future Mario 3D games, and, fortunately, each 3D game did manage to get a little better.
The bad stuff: The controls are imprecise, the camera is AWFUL (I'd argue that the camera is the main villain of the game, since it's responsible for more deaths than Bowser ever could be), and Mario won't shut up.
Wasn't fussed about the two-player mode, really. I'm not a fan of games that alternate turns (they bore me), and I can't see any way they could have had the game work with two players simultaneously.
Still in the top five Mario games ever for me, but Galaxy took the title Best 3D Mario. Still, SM64 is an absolute classic and is one of the games any video game fan (especially Nintendo fans, so get on it!) should play. It's so much fun to just explore the castle, discovering hidden secrets and playing levels. Sure, it had it's problems (awful camera and somewhat loose controls), but I won't fault it for those, since it was a relatively early 3D game and 3D games still have these problems.
So yes, that's a vote for loving Super Mario 64!

There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.
Super Mario 64 was revolutionary and still a lot of fun to play in many aspects. I don't think it is as fun as Super Mario Galaxy but it is definitely better than Sunshine.
I got an N64 a couple years ago which came with it. I love it. The DS version is so annoying. I wish they'd release an analog stick attachment for the DS.

My cousin had it on N64 and man that was a blast to play. When I got my Wii I downloaded it. For 10 bucks on the VC you cannot go wrong with it. I would say to this day it is at least in 2009 a 9.5 out of 10
