IGN recently ran an article detailing new features on Guitar Hero 5. You may remember that GH: WT was the FIRST game to allow access to the SD card and allow DLC for their retail release. The developers (Vicarious Visions) shunned conventional wisdom and blew the lid off of SD connectivity, paving the way for Nintendo to allow SD access for all downloadable content. Now, they may have done it again...
IGN: Now… I don't want to get this one wrong, but there's something going on with Friend Codes this time around, right? Or should I say "not" going on with friend codes?
Karthik: Yes. No in-game Friend Codes!
For GH5, we've implemented support for your global Wii Friend Codes. If you've got friends in your Wii address book, they'll automatically be added to your friends list in game, so you can easily connect up with them in online multiplayer games. It's much easier to maintain a single list of friends on your Wii that you only have to enter once and use that address book directly in-game for invites, etc.
That's right ladies and gents. Vicarious Visions has eliminated FC's. How did they do this? Is Nintendo lightening up? When will other developers take notice?
Ea online has no friend codes whatsoever. And that's been around for time.
Yeah, EA did circumvent Friend Codes, but they added their own layer of control similar to friend codes, in the EA Nation network. GH5 will automatically populate your friends list based off of your Wii console's friends. That means as long as you have identified someone via your Wii number, that's ALL it takes. Its the closest thing to Xbox's grade-A online mode.
Sounds like GH5 is doing that Wii Music did where the game has a "share" setting that flags your system as Wii Music and then does the same for friends. Very cool.
@AURainman: I don't understand what you mean, I can add friends using EA online with out the need for a friend code OR there Wii code. And with Mario Kart and Conduit you can make friends just using your existing collection of Wii #'s. How is this new and cool?
Off topic but... The only way Guitar Hero would ever be new and cool would be if they released Accordion Hero. Imagine your friends pumping that instrument and have both hands of fingers flying over the buttons. I want it now.
I don't think that this one instance will "kill" friend codes any more than Wii Music did, or EA did, but it at least makes the exception more common, and will hopefully elevate that to being the rule next gen.
I'm in support of codes to protect gamers, if that's the game Nintendo wants to play. I don't personally want them, but I respect their choice. There's no reason, though, for each game to have its own code when everybody already has a console number that can be used universally. Let gamers exchange console numbers and only console numbers, and then set up a block list or something in the settings of the main menu. Easy.
@Chicken Brutus I believe poeple are automatically blocked if they are not in your friends list so you don't have to worry about it if somebody you don't like adds you

Oh, you're right. But somebody mentioned once that Nintendo's intention with multiple FCs was to prevent certain players from joining you when they're not welcome. The example used was that big brother might add somebody's Smash Bros. FC, but then that person who was added could get into little sister's Animal Crossing village and run amok.
If they want to prevent this, they can just set up a security page to block certain FCs from being recognized by certain games. I respect their concern, but currently the system seems more like a punishment than a safeguard.
@AURainman: I don't understand what you mean, I can add friends using EA online ...
Let me stop you right there. USING EA ONLINE. You must manage ANOTHER friend's list. That's the problem. One friends list per game is not easy. It is cumbersome and outdated.

Wouldn't it be easier if you could just stop at the Wii number? Having to add Tiger10 ID-Machu may be slightly easier than FCs, but its still a layer of complexity that is totally unnecessary.
I didn't know Wii Music had any feature of the sort, because I never played that game. IF Wii Music truly broke down FC walls, then why hasn't Nintendo lightened up on the FC restriction?
Nope, still don't understand. How is entering some-ones name in game, which automatically sends out an invite, which the recipient can then accept or block, cumbersome? I think EA's model is excellent and wish they all worked like that. I'm not being awkward for the sake of it though it may have come across that way, I seem to have a little troll festering inside me today for some reason, ug. It might have something to do with my complete disregard for the Guitar Hero series, so just ignore me. One universal code ftw!
