The games I really thought were great so far were: Super Mario Galaxy Kirby's Epic Yarn DKC Returns TvsC Sonic Colors Everything else was only disappointing due to over hype(Goldeneye), mediocre(MH Tri), or just bad in general(Metroid: Other M and Red Steel 2)

Okay guys I made the poll. If a person listed a bunch of games with no clear indication on which was best, I just put them all on the list. Anyway, the rankings so far are like this:
First place goes tooo... Super Mario Galaxy 2!!! (16 votes) Is this any real surprise? This finely crafted Nintendo masterpiece takes the cake for true ingenuity and genius game design.
Second place goes tooo... Monster Hunter Tri!!! (9 votes) The online multiplayer smash hit from Capcom really clicked with a lot of NL users. Its beautifully crafted monsters created some truly awe-inspiring moments.
Third place goes tooo... Donkey Kong Country Returns!!! (7 votes) Despite this game being new to the market, a lot of users have already loved it. Its colorful new graphics mixed with tried and true gameplay that dates back to the SNES gets it the 3rd place prize.
The entire list of votes is as follows: 1. Super Mario Galaxy 2 = 16 votes 2. Monster Hunter Tri = 9 3. Donkey Kong Country Returns = 7 4. Metroid: Other M = 5 5. Goldeneye 007 = 4 Tatsunoko vs Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars = 4 Kirby's Epic Yarn = 4 8. Sin and Punishment: Star Successor = 3 9. Bit. Trip. Runner = 2 Samurai Warriors 3 = 2 Cave Story = 2 Sonic Colors = 2 13. Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit = 1 No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle = 1 Endless Ocean 2: Blue World = 1 Trackmania = 1 Red Steel 2 = 1 Sonic 4: Episode 1 = 1 Megaman 10 = 1 Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit = 1
But its not over yet! You can still vote and I'll update the poll every once in a while! Also, you can vote for Epic Mickey as soon as it comes out (whenever that is)

It's like, I just love a cowboy
You know
I'm just like, I just, I know, it's bad
But I'm just like
Can I just like, hang off the back of your horse
And can you go a little faster?!
Those mechanics have already shown up in other games such as Metal Gear Solid: Sons of Liberty and Dino Crisis 3.
i don't recall those games playing out like a 2D sidescroller in 3D, letting you flip and bounce off of walls and run at supersonic speeds with ease. i think the way they managed to bring super metroid's gameplay into 3D without all the compromises the prime games had to make in terms of mobility was a really big achievement.
I don't recall those games featuring as ham-fisted of a story and as terrible a script as Other M however. I'm also pretty sure they weren't generally regarded as disappointments(at least Metal Gear).
My vote probably has to go to DKCR, with Galaxy 2 close behind. Donkey Kong has really pleasantly surprised me in his newest outing.

...you do realize that you're talking about metal gear 4 there, right? the game with maybe the most long winded and overwrought story in the history of gaming? that's beside the point, since the story has nothing to do with the gameplay i was talking about.
whether it's a disappointment depends on who you ask; most people really liked the game. it's an extremely vocal minority that really made it seem like it didn't do so well. you obviously don't like it, fine, but that doesn't mean it's impossible for it to have accomplished anything. i thought it was unlike anything i'd ever played before and i'm certain you'll see games building off of it in the future. i can't think of any other game this year or this gen in general besides mario galaxy that had so many ambitious ideas in it.

Except for shooting missiles right?
If you can look past the morph ball the similarities are easy to see. Other M doesn't play out like a 2D sidescroller, it's a fully 3D game. You just can't change your camera angle (except when you stop to shoot in first person view) same as in Metal Gear Solid and Dino Crisis 3. They all share auto-aiming too. I think what Other M achieved was putting the Metroid stamp on a familiar game. It still could have been game of the year if it was well written or held onto the exploration that Metroid was known for.
what about the painstaking work of setting up camera angles room by room to let you run by holding in one direction like a sidescroller, not to mention the D pad controls they managed to make work for a 3D world? if you guys want to continue this in the other m thread we can, i didn't want to start an argument about it here... ...i just thought after a few months it'd be safe to say something good about other m without having to go through an argument...

@romulux: I'm with you, man. Other M gets a lot of undeserved hate. The fake digitized warehouse/lush environments were quite cool, and I loved the sneak-attack bosses that just appeared.. made the action feel more organic, less like a scripted "boss battle" with title card and everything. Poor voice-over wasn't a big deal for me. Even the pixel-hunting was something of a refreshing surprise. It's great to see risks taken in such a revered franchise. Game of the Year? Not sure. But Top 3, easy. (With Galaxy 2 and as-yet-unplayed mascot platformer in the mix...)
