what about the painstaking work of setting up camera angles room by room to let you run by holding in one direction like a sidescroller, not to mention the D pad controls they managed to make work for a 3D world? if you guys want to continue this in the other m thread we can, i didn't want to start an argument about it here... ...i just thought after a few months it'd be safe to say something good about other m without having to go through an argument...
I'm pretty sure Sons of Liberty is not the 4th, that would be Guns of the Patriots.
Overall I would say Other M is a good game, and it certainly did do a few good things, namely with the controls. But as an overall game I think most people would say it's lacking, in story and in gameplay. Ambition does not make a game automatically great, it has to execute it well too. I believe the opposite of you, I found the loud minority to be the people praising the game.
After playing more DKCR I now definitely would pick it as Wii game of the year. The pure fun and amazement I've had while playing it definitely surpasses Galaxy 2, and every other Wii game this year I've played.
Edit: While I did enjoy Runner, for me it is probably the weakest Bit.Trip gameplay wise. Just the way it was built, if you've played maybe one level from each of the 3 areas, then you've pretty much played the whole game.
With the qualifier that there's a little over a month left in the year, right now my game of 2010 for the Wii and 2010 PERIOD is Donkey Kong Country Returns!

you must not have been around for g4's 2/5 sexist tirade or the flood of other hypercritical reviews. a lot of people (myself included) who liked the game defended it vehemently in response to those things, so without that incredibly negative reaction some people had you wouldn't have had all those positive defenses turning up. other m isn't my favorite metroid game and i have some small complaints myself, but i still think it was the most interesting game i played all year by far. just trying to give it some credit for that.

Send me the best you've got. Send me your strongest machines. The fight my brother fought, here, now, will end with me.

Metroid: Other M
“The revolution is not an apple that falls when it is ripe. You have to make it fall.” - "Some men are born mediocre, some men achieve mediocrity, and some men have mediocrity thrust upon them."
Best WiiWare game of 2010? Hmm... that's a hard one...
The Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney trilogy was quite a nice surprise for every adventure fan who has not played the series before. These games are worth to try out as they can get very exciting and involving. From a technical standpoint the ports could have been much better (not just mildly edited DS roms) but the low price more than makes up for it imo.
8/10 Phoenix Wright - Ace Attorney
8/10 Phoenix Wright - Ace Attorney: Justice For All
8/10 Phoenix Wright - Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations
Next one. This series started in 2009, but the final epsiode of Tales of Monkey Island (Chapter 5: Rise of the Pirate God) came out in 2010 - and I loved it. Each chapter was just 6~7 hours long, but audiovisuals, cinematics, puzzles, dialogue and humour made up for it. Another masterpiece for adventure fans, and a true-to-its-roots sequel all around. But the WiiWare episodes were overpriced compared to the PC version, and the ports were a little buggy. Still, it was absolutely enjoyable. I got all the chapters on day one, and have beaten them in the same Friday night and couldn't wait for the next one to be released.
9/10 Tales of Monkey Island - Chapter 5: Rise of the Pirate God
Nintendo put out two great racing games. A classic turned online: Excitebike World Challenge and the unique Art Style light trax. I've put more than 30 hours into each of them. They got everything a good racing game needs: tight controls, the sense of speed, and cool circuits.
9/10 Excitebike: World Challenge
9/10 Art Style: light trax
Other unique games have a special place in here for me too: The other Art Style game PENTA TENTACLES was pretty addictive, an amazing new arcade-like experience, and ayim (and yet it moves) with it's trippy LSD visuals and sounds and world-turning puzzling gameplay I couldn't put down. All in all, in the end PENTA TENTACLES needs more variety in stage design, and ayim was too short.
8/10 Art Style: PENTA TENTACLES
8/10 and yet it moves
Worth mentioning are Shinen's Jett Rocket and art of balance and Gaijin Games BIT.TRIP VOID and BIT.TRIP RUNNER (haven't played FATE yet). Jett Rocket does an amazing job showing off how 3D-platformers should look on WiiWare. It's also a good little exploring game and there's lots of underused potential. Come on, just one jetski stage? Just one snowboard stage? And art of balance is extremely addicting and fun, but ultimately too short (I need more levels!!) BIT.TRIP VOID and BIT.TRIP RUNNER I thought were much deeper and more fun than last years BEAT and CORE.
8/10 Jett Rocket
8/10 art of balance
7/10 BIT.TRIP VOID
8/10 BIT.TRIP RUNNER
Other games of 2010 worth mentioning: Happy Hammerin', Monsteca Corral, Toribash: Violence Perfected, Tomena Sanner and WarioWare DIY Showcase.
There's still a plethora of games I haven't played that are well-received or interesting so I won't pick a definite favourite for 2010.
I still need to add BIT.TRIP FATE, Blaster Master Overdrive, Castlevania The Adventure ReBirth, Cave Story, chick chick BOOM, Diner Dash, Dive: The Medes Islands Secret, Flowerworks: Follie's Adventure, Furry Legends, Gods vs Humans, HoopWorld: BasketBrawl, Hydroventure, Max & the Magic Marker, Mega Man 10, Military Madness: Nectaris, Overturn: Mecha Wars, Pearl Harbor Trilogy - 1941: Red Sun Rising, Rage of the Gladiator, Robox, Sonic The Hedgehog 4: Episode I, Snowpack Park, ThruSpace and Zombie Panic in Wonderland to my list of WiiWare games of 2010.
Those mechanics have already shown up in other games such as Metal Gear Solid: Sons of Liberty and Dino Crisis 3.
i don't recall those games playing out like a 2D sidescroller in 3D, letting you flip and bounce off of walls and run at supersonic speeds with ease. i think the way they managed to bring super metroid's gameplay into 3D without all the compromises the prime games had to make in terms of mobility was a really big achievement.
Except for shooting missiles right?
If you can look past the morph ball the similarities are easy to see. Other M doesn't play out like a 2D sidescroller, it's a fully 3D game. You just can't change your camera angle (except when you stop to shoot in first person view) same as in Metal Gear Solid and Dino Crisis 3. They all share auto-aiming too. I think what Other M achieved was putting the Metroid stamp on a familiar game. It still could have been game of the year if it was well written or held onto the exploration that Metroid was known for.
I'm pretty sure you are the only person who is going to compare Metal Gear Solid's gameplay with Metroid Other M. I've played both and still have no idea what you're talking about.

Right now it's Super Mario Galaxy 2 with Sin & Punishment as a close runner-up but DKCR could change this completely. As for WiiWare, it's Cave Story with Bit.Trip Runner also a close runner-up.
i think at this point a better question than what game was best was whether this year in general was nintendo's best (quality-wise, not sale-wise). i've never spent so much on games before!

i wasn't too clear on that either. i haven't played sons of liberty for a while so i figured maybe i was forgetting something.
After playing Epic Mickey, and starting my second playthrough (which is somehow even better than the first) I'm tempted to say that it very well could be my favorite Wii game of 2010. Other M and Galaxy 2 are close, but Epic Mickey's morality system, art direction, music and paint-thinner gameplay all come together in a truly special way. It's not a perfect game, by any means, but it's the only game I've played this year on any console that has really impacted me emotionally.

About the discussion of Metroid: Other M, doesn't it use an auto-targeting to create a 3D effect, i.e. there are enemies in the foreground and backround that you can shoot? If so that would make it a lot like Shadow Complex, which is a good thing, since that means they borrowed a progressive element from a game that parallels Super Metroid's greatness. Too bad they took the most awkward and persnickity element, since I recall it being difficult to aim at the right enemies, but Other M might've improved it.
My top games of 2010 are Super Mario Galaxy 2, Goldeneye 007, and Metroid: Other M. Black Ops is also a great wii game this year but not as good as the top 3. Despite this, Black Ops is the most addictive and time consuming (in a good way) game of the year thanks to it awesome multiplayer which is the best yet for the wii. Galaxy 2 is flawless, Goldeneye has the best local multiplayer, Other M had the best controls, and black ops is the most addictive. Buy them all!!!!!!!
