Simon's Quest and 64 are you're favorites??? That's pretty much the polar opposite of myself (and many Castlevania fans, I believe).

I'm aware of this fact. But I'm not a fan of the series, so it makes sense.
I hold that Castlevania I and III are highly overrated.

AVGN also hates Double Dragon III because it's too hard, but I never had any of the troubles he had during his review - except for not always being able to execute the spin-kick when you need it. Also he said the alternate characters were worthless when in fact they were quite powerful.

I now kinda regret my free download of Castlevania III yesterday since that looks too frustrating for me to bother with. I'll probably just play the early levels repeatedly.

guess what? even the early levels are friggin hard!! at least for a noob like me

I love castlevania II and the "horrible night" quote is something I'll never forget. still, some of his complaints are valid with certain parts being impossible to figure out. the nerd is hilarious though so he can get away with trashing a flawed classic.

I do think the game is great once you know what you're doing and the soundtrack is one of the best ever. Its also obviously where the later castelvania games took their influence from.

His reviews are for entertainment. Just trying to clear up some of the anger due to him "not liking a game".

@y2josh - Exactly. He exaggerates his hatred for games to be funny. He's admtted most of the games he trashes he actually loves.

He still brings up some good points about a game's flaws regardless of whether his reviews are for entertainment or serious.

I haven't gotten that far in Castlevania III yet but the issues he brings up will be quite frustrating for me.

Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.

I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!

AVGN made Castlevaina III look like a bad game, it's a good game, but hard!

Yeah, that's true. And I didn't think you were angry at the AVGN, some of replies sounded like people were upset cause he dissed a game they enjoyed. I, being an AVGN, had to stand up for him on this one

I've not played Castlevania III, but it looks very hard, fun and frustrating.

Gotta love the stiff controls of the 8-bit era

trust me Castlevania III is far far from unbeatable, once you know the way to get past the 2 real difficult stages in the game, and what item to use on what boss to kill them easily, the game really isn't that hard., oh and you can very easily avoid the pillars of fire that Dracula surrounds you with, if you aren't too close to him, the pillars are spread further apart..

I'm looking forward to what he says about and what reaction people have to his SCIV review.

He's pretty much spot on with those titles. Part 3 was good, but bogged down by a bunch of minor annoyances. Part 2? It always loaded correctly, which is the best thing I have to say about it.

You know, getting knocked back whenever an enemy strikes you (usually into a pit) was one of the shittiest design strategies around back in the 8 and 16 bit days.

That didn't bother me too much. The bit where you have to jump across different pillars only to end up on a screen where you don't seem to be able to jump up without hitting some kind of spiky chain that kills you instantly or fall was my downfall -- just couldn't figure out what do to there and tried different things again and again and again and again without success. So close to the end too...

I really hope Castlevania Adventure ReBirth comes out in NA today so I can skip buying the Japanese version for First Impressions!

His comments regarding the deathly stairs in CVIII are hilarious. As much as I love the game, it's damn frustrating just how treacherous the staircases are. Nothing is quite so endangering as a staircase, you're helpless.

castlevania 3 is evil but so much fun personally i always preferred part 2 for nes games it felt like more of an adventure game sadly it also wasn't as hard as 1 and 3, but best one out of retro games is part 4
the thing about avgn is that he isn't really a good 8 bit gamer being 8 bit gaming isn't for everyone and just because he grew up with the games doesn't make him good at them

I think the AVGN releases are on alternating Tuesdays from one of James' previous blog posts.

Am i the only one who thinks that Angry videogame nerd has gone a litle bit downhill. Last really execelent review was Dick Tracy. Tough, this Halloween episode was better than the one from last year.

He's become mainstream and he knows it. He's no longer that quirky guy reviewing bad games for a small select audience for his own amusement and ours, he's now doing it more because thats what we've come to expect from him.
