The CPU's aren't a problem because once you practice with them long enough, you can easily predict their actions and beat them. What is hard, is the "Challenges", like beating the boss's on Hard, Very Hard, or Intense. This is where you have to practice and predict boss's many times to where you don't take damage or very little in order to win.
I think lv. 7-9 CPU's are fairly difficult, but any character below lv.6 is a practically a punching bag.
If you think New Super Mario Bros. Wii is hard, try Super Mario Bros. 3.

I think they're much harder than Melee's, and WAY harder than the original. In both the original and Melee, I used to be able to take on a team of 3 level 9s at the same time. A lot of the difficulty might be because every character in Brawl seems to be more sluggish and less polished than in Melee, which is the main reason I don't like Brawl as much.
I found the CPUs in Brawl much harder than Melee's. I had played Melee the day before I got Brawl and found that out the hard way. The first time I was playing with my main (Luigi) against a Level 9 CPU I got pulverized.

CPUs i dont fight very often, but the enemies in subspace emmisary get really hard on intense! Intense adventure is pretty difficult all round, but on easy it is just a pushover. Enemies get killed in like one blow.

There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.
They don't seem to get any smarter, just hit harder. Level 1-4 is a huge joke and if you can't handle 3 of them at any level, you should return the game; 5-7 hit a bit harder and you'll find it a bit more difficult to keep on the ground as they'll keep you in the air from hits, but you should be able to take them out with some due practice. 8-9 are the hardest of the bunch, but not as hard as some of the good people I've played against. They just hit harder than the 5-7s and definitely will give you a good fight if you don't get some real practice, but once you figure out how to get rid of them (they're fairly stupid and most of the time won't pick up items or block) 9 becomes as much as a joke as 1.
