For those that aren't aware, the game's been officially announced as of today. You can read all about it here: www.wiiloveit.com/news/july-15-09/supermonkeyballstepandrollannouncedforwii
I'm really excited about this. I did know about it even before the trademark was filed though.
I used to love Monkey Ball 1 and 2. They were fun and addicting and had great multiplayer. In fact me and my friends still play it together. However after Adventure the series really went downhill in almost every way. The most notable thing that went bad was the controls. So I have no idea what Sega is thinking of doing with the series on the balance board. In fact Punch out!!'s balance board compatibility didn't work and that was a Nintendo made game. I at least think Sega should have made the game using the Wii Motion Plus because that would have worked out better. If this game doesn't work well I think Sega should move the Monkey Ball series to the Xbox or PS3 because the first 2 games worked great with analog control.
The first Monkey Ball was certainly the best of the series, by a long shot. Monkey Ball 2 had some interesting stages for 1 player, but no simultaneous competition mode, which was a huge let down for multiplayer. I actually found the DS touch-based game to be very good as well, so different ways of controlling aren't really the problem, it's just laziness in some of the recent entries in the series.
The balance board controls will be interesting... there is a prototype of sorts in Wii Fit already, where you roll the little balls into holes on small courses, and that works well from a functionality standpoint but has a very high difficulty for basic movement, compared to the general ease of Monkey Ball navigation. I don't see why you'd suggest moving to other systems either way, though--they could have an option for nunchuck control and that would certainly solve your uneasiness about the controls, without needing to switch consoles.

I loved all of them. Monkey Ball 2 was amazing and Banana Blitz was great and still is. The amount of innovation and work they put into it isn't appreciated enough, if you ask me. I'm really looking forward to this.
I still enjoy the Monkey Ball games for some quick pick up and play action, but with this type of game precision controls are very important or the whole game is spoilt, so it is important they concentrate on making the balance board control work well otherwise they are wasting their time. I don't have a balance board and don't intend on getting one so probably won't pick this up anyway but i would still like to hear the game has been made well and the balance board can actually be implemented well for use in a actual game
