@Odnetnin
I had problems with wall jumping too. If i remeber correctly you should jump towards the wall and just as you hit the wall press jump button again. I could be wrong. Was a longtime since I played it.

I'm stuck at the creepy thing that grabs you and smacks you with his tail.... any help?

I've made a huge mistake.

What's the speed booster?

I think that's where you hold the B button on the classic controller to run faster.

Here's a cool map!

Wooton, if it's a boss. Here's a hint: Grappling beam.

Regarding maps, there are lots of Metroid maps out there. Kind of defeats the purpose though, I think.

No, there is nothing special about the monster heads. You can't kill them or interact with them in any useful way.

There may be a guide explaining the wall jump somewhere out there on "the internet,"

Believe me, I did my best to research the move. Many walkthroughs just said "wall jump up the shaft and then blah blah blah...", but the ones that did try to explain how to walljump didn't really help me. It's got to be a matter of timing, which can't really be conveyed via text. It'd be kind of like explaining how to beat a certain boxer in Punch-Out. You can say, "Dodge this, hit him when he does that..." but it still takes effort on the part of the player to figure out the exact timing for those moves. Youtube videos helped show me what a successful jump looked like, but didn't really help me as I couldn't see what buttons were being pressed, or when.

Bottom line: whatever is required for a successful wall jump is something I'm not particularly good at doing.

I did try to learn (I promise!) but I was totally unsuccessful. I eventually made it up the shaft as a fluke, but I'd be no more equipped to do it again than I was the first time.

I'll reboot the game when I get a chance and see if I can tell you guys where I am...but to be honest, I've forgotten even what little of the map I had memorized, so if I ever do play it again, I'd probably be better off starting from the beginning.

Yea, what Pix linked to is more of what I meant, not a text walk through, which would understandably be unhelpful. This tutorial suggests pressing both buttons at the same time. I'm pretty sure Samus sticks in that poised-to-jump position for a moment after pressing the direction, so I'd suggest delaying the jump press slightly to make sure you don't bumble it.

Edit: Oh wait, yea, there's that one place in Maridia (see the underwater part of the tutorial -- is that where you are?) where you have to wall jump (or bomb jump, but that's harder), but that's actually the easiest place to do it because the walls are so close and completely smooth, not to mention pretty short.

Super Metroid is brilliant. They should release another side-scroller in the Metroid series for DS. Other M is only partially a 2D game.

From what I've heard / seen, Other M was intended to be mostly 2D with some 3D sections, but the side-scrolling segments were scrapped and now it's supposed to be 3D with a 2D feel. If I've been misled, I'll be very happy in two and a half weeks (not that I won't be anyway -- new Metroid!)

So far so good but I never played it when it was released originally - it's a new game to me. I'm currently trying to finish it (along with Prime 3) before September. How long would you say it takes to beat this game? Is it possible in a day?

The thing about doing the wall-jumps is timing them. Timing is key.

To each their own

Adam

It's possible in a very short amount of time if you know where you're going. If you want to beat it by Other M's release, you need to either devote a weekend to it or use a guide. If you have the time, I'd recommend playing through it without a guide, just asking for help when you get terribly stuck.

I just bought Super Metroid and it is addicting as hell, I cannot put the controller down. Its not as good as the Prime Trilogy but is still great. This game and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past are some of the funnest games I have played, even compared to brand new games of today.
@ madgear. You can speedrun the game in hour but that is like the world record. On your first play through it will take you quite a while, probably a couple of weeks if you pace yourself. I bought it 7 days ago and have played it for 9 hours and I am about halfway. This game will deserve multiple playthroughs!!!

@Chicken: There are some YouTube tutorials on how to wall jump.

Oh God.

Thank you for that link...but man does that seem scarily difficult.

Ah well. I already own the thing, and this might just be my key to making more progress, so...thank you.

I don't know if this adds any more perspective, but if you'd like to narrate wall-jumping in your head as you do it, just use a rhythm of "jump-touch-turn-jump-touch-turn-jump."
I like to wall-jump in the corner at the beginning of the very first fight against Ridley.

You guys are making me want to go through this again, for the fourth time this year. Adam, I challenge you to a race!
since I missed out on the Zelda II race
