the insane lack of direction is initially off-putting

a lot of people complain about that, but don't stick with it long enough to adapt to it. there's usually some clue as to where to go next, but there's absolutely no hand holding about it. if you're not checking every inch of the screen then you're in for hours of wandering around aimlessly, but when you're paying attention the exploration is never cheap. seeing a crab scurry out of the wall lets you know there's a tunnel there, getting dropped in a lake after getting the gravity suit lets you know that you should explore underwater areas now, ect.

my favorite hint is the broken glass tube you see while trying to get into maridia which, aside from being broken, is identical to a tube you came through earlier... message being that they're destructible. i wish i could wipe my memory and figure it all out again.

of all the tricky skills to master in video games, wall jumping is my favorite by far. it makes you feel so powerful to be able to reach any spot in the game, whether you're supposed to be able to or not. it's so awesome that a lot of other games had to work it in afterward, most notably mario. anyway, the trick is to press away from the wall you're on first, then jump. it's definitely worth practicing until you get it.

by the way, is this where you're stuck?

That was awesome indeed. In Metroid Prime there is also such tube, with a missile expansion beneath it. Not only was it predictable that it was breakable by the knowledge of the previous game, it also had cracks in it...

@romulux: Amen!

@90's+Gamer: Actually, if you're referring to the destructible (via power bomb) tube in Magmoor Caverns, then it wasn't a missile expansion under there, but a charge combo (the Ice Spreader, I believe)...

That's the one, yes! Thanks for the reminder, haha.

That, THAT part...is one of the most annoying parts ever in a game!!!

That part is totally useless untill you have the jump-ball upgrade which you can use, when the top is reached.

you can just morph while in midair to get in there

Haha, typical Metroid-logic, thanks.

@romulux: One of the more frustrating expansions to get, another being the one in Maridia where you have to use the same technique, only if you fail you fall into the "quick"sand instead of down a long, vertical shaft...

This was the only bit of poor game design in the whole game. I remember when I first played this getting stuck here, which wouldn't have been so bad if they hadn't had a save point down there. Once you save, you have to either master the wall jump or start over. I started over.

The Maridia tube was another thing that had me stuck for ages. However, you can't just restart for that because you don't know what it is you're missing. You know, I don't think I ever solved that puzzle; I think I had to use a gaming mag or strategy guide to figure that one out.

Oh, yeah, I remember being stuck at the wall-jump part at one time. But, eventually, I got used to it. I did like those creatures that hummed the Metroid theme the moment you entered the room.

I bomb jumped all the way up to the top( FAIL AT Wall jump) and after like 10 minutes of struggling FINALLY got to the top! If I remember correctly I got a missile expansion . Hope other M will be able to revive some of those memories!

Yea, the wall jump really required text explanation. At the very least, they could have not put that darn save point down there. I got stuck there, too, as a kid. I think I had to borrow an auto-fire controller to bomb jump out of there.

Of course, now that I know what to do, it couldn't be easier, and wall jumping really makes the game more fun.

Its quite funny but even now I find it easier to bomb jump then wall jump, after a while I get into this rhythm and it's actually fun But Wall jumping is quite fun too ( Its much easier to do in metroid zero mission )

Yeah, first time I got to that room (when the game was first released) it never occurred to me to do wall jumps. I did the ball bomb thing all the way to the top, took me a WHILE.

Awesome isn't even the word. They've yet to invent a word to describe this incredible game. I can't play 1st person games since they cause me nausea, so I had to skip on the Prime games. (I have the trilogy, and like an idiot keep trying to play the games since everyone says they are so awesome, but can't get past 20-30 minutes without the effects)

It's why I'm looking forward to Other M. If it can simply touch on Super Metroid's cape, it will be great.

Hahaha no, but believe me when I tell you that that shaft is etched into my nightmares. I did eventually make it up and out...but not without a lot of frustration. After that I played the game for at least a little while longer...I think I grabbed a few upgrades, found another wall-jump section, gave up on it when I didn't find it any easier than the first one, and that was that.

I'm absolutely 100% certain that I'm doing the wall jump "wrong," but I do wish the game would give me some feedback on how or why I'm screwing it up. It's either a control issue, or a simple training issue...but either way...ugh.

I don't want to make it sound like wall jumping made me lose interest in the game. That's definitely not true, though it was notably irritating. By the time I got to those sections I was already kind of second-guessing my enjoyment of the game, which made it all the more tempting to just give up.

One day I'll go back. One day...

If you need to do a wall jump and you're not at that area... you don't need to do a wall jump. It is an unnecessary technique (as is bomb jump) unless you're going for 100% completion. It is a confusing game to play the first time, so I could see why you might think you need it.

There may be a guide explaining the wall jump somewhere out there on "the internet," but I think what you do is jump at a wall, tap the D-pad away from it once (you'll see Samus poised to jump if you do it right), then jump right after. I do it naturally now, so I don't have to think about it, but it completely infuriated me the first time I had to do it and couldn't figure out how to consistently get it right.

If you know you saved right at the spot, you should boot it up if only to let us know what area you're at. There ought to be an easier if less obvious solution to your problem, if you're at the right place at all.

Speaking of which, how do you wall jump? I have 30 missiles right now while my walkthrough says I should have 40. The only place it seems they could be is up the long red shaft with the recharge station and entrance to Norfair/Kraid's lair at the bottom. There are those annoying things that fly from left to right that can be killed with super missiles, but even with high-jump boots I can't make it up to the first ledge. Any pointers?

See my previous post for an explanation of how to wall jump, though I'm not sure it's 100% correct.

As for your current position, I don't think there are missile containers up there. I have tried wall jumping all the way up to the top, but while you can wall jump to a few ledges before getting high jump boots (which you have now, so... not useful), going further requires ice beam (or perhaps "mad skills," not sure if it's actually possible since you have a lot of enemies to dodge, then you have to shoot a breakable floor mid-jump, which breaks your spin jump needed for the next wall jump).

If you're just at Kraid, 30 missiles should be good. You can easily shoot his fingernails or whatever those projectiles are for more missiles mid-fight, and you can hit him with a charge beam if you run out and that's too difficult.
