@CB Funny, i have the exact opposite feeling when it comes to the Metroid games -- i love the 2D games, but the Prime series didn't do much for me. Even though i can recognize that they are very good, personally they just gave me an overall "meh". I did quite enjoy the first one (probably mainly because of the new spin on a classic franchise), but after that i didn't really dig them much.
if you didn't like it at first then you probably never will. i feel sorry for those of you who don't like it, because you're bad people, and your lives are so much emptier for having such awful taste.
all complete seriousness aside, what makes it great is that every aspect of the game is not only perfectly crafted, but it all gels together so well. the floaty physics and overall controls are just right, the art direction in every environment is beautiful and unbelievably detailed, every single note of the soundtrack is pure genius, and the creepy, dramatic tension never gets old.
the atmosphere built out of all those things is the real core of the game, so if you didn't like it before, try paying more attention to the little details. listen to the music, watch the animals go about their business, look at every little pore and imperfection in the terrain. even after 16 years of playing it regularly, i still marvel at those things every time.

I definitely enjoy the little details you mentioned, and the soundtrack is great. Visually, the game encapsulates everything that was so wonderful about the SNES era...which is still my personal favorite console, as far as graphics are concerned. The artistry inherent in the design is certainly great stuff...it's the gameplay that leaves me cold. I love the little details, but the larger, more direct engagement that the game requires from me is where I fall down. It's not that I find it a bland experience...far from it. It's just an experience that isn't resonating with me the way so many other games (including later Metroid games) do.
You're right to point those things out as worthy of attention...but none of it was able to keep me interested in the core experience of the game, which just didn't feel engaging to me at all.

Just because I'm bad does not mean I have an awful taste

He's probably Joking. Granted, I just assume everything he says is a joke.
This topic is redundantly awesome, and I fully endorse it...
"Don't make enemies, they'll stab your heart; don't make friends, they'll stab your back. Including me, including you, all men are trash. Don't love; don't be loved. Have nothing to do with other; live in isolation."
@Chicken+Brutus: I'm curious, how far did you get before you gave up on it? When I first bought it I got to the beginning of Norfair (the lava place) and got bored with it. I even regretted the purchase at one point. A few months later I decided to push on and right after that is where the game really starts getting enjoyable. It's too bad that it starts so slowly, but once you get some of the bad-donkey powerups the game is super-amazingly-fun.
This and Super Castlevania IV are two of my ultimate comfort-food games. Played the heck outy of them when they first came out, and now I have to give them a play-through every year or two just so I can utterly dominate them. I don't even realize when I'm sequence breaking anymore—what, am I not supposed to wall jump up a sheer wall? Or bomb jump up to that ledge?
Although I never knew about the Machball technique until my play-through about two weeks ago. How did I ever survive without grabbing a super missile tank early? My memory in my old age is getting fuzzy, though; missed two or three pickups on that run, and didn't beat it in the best time category.
What is a man? A miserable little pile of secrets!
I agree it starts slow...very slow. That's the major flaw I see at this point. My personal favorite game of all time was influenced by SM, which is another reason I like the latter, but I'll take Cave Story's admittedly slow start over its overall OKness until right after Norfair (first time).
Also, I've enjoyed what I've played of Prime but got stuck in the snow place and have never touched it again. The graphics are sure something special, though. Easily better than almost any Wii game I've seen.
EDIT: And yeah, the insane lack of direction is initially off-putting, but I think it's the best part of the game in the long run. What I've seen of Prime so far isn't quite as good as this.
i think it's the best game ever made. one of the few i can think of that's absolutely perfect.

It's like, I just love a cowboy
You know
I'm just like, I just, I know, it's bad
But I'm just like
Can I just like, hang off the back of your horse
And can you go a little faster?!

It's been a while, so I can't remember for sure. I beat Kraid (he's the two-screens-tall tubby green guy, right?) and progressed to some extent after that. I remember there being a few wall-jump sections that were absurdly frustrating (I just could not get the timing for wall jumps down at all), but I don't know if they were before or after that boss, so that's probably not helpful.
But yeah. Beat Kraid, probably found a handful of powerups after that, and didn't bother going back.
I will replay it again, at some point, probably. Maybe. Perhaps...
