Hey all you strategy game fans out there! I'm in the market for a good VC/Wiiware strategy title and was hoping for suggestions from the most helpful and knowledgable gaming community on the web. If you have a favorite or one that you think is a must play let me know and any reasons why are always helpful. I have been eyeing Military Maddness and Ogre Battle, but there is a decent selection out there that I know squat about. Any Help or opinions would be greatly appreciated!

Shining Force is quite good. Shining Force II is supposedly much better, although I've not played it.

Shining Force II is much better, and that would be my strategy game of choice at the moment for these services. I didn't like the original at all, personally.

If you're willing to wait indefinitely, Luc Benard's Mechowars (or whatever it's called) looks like it'll be even better, but no word on a release date for that yet, sadly. Reviews of the version for cell phones have been quite enthusiastic though.

Both Shining Force games are great as a long time Shining Force owner. I have to say Shining Force 2 is even better than the first one is though.

Wow, Lotta love for the Shining Force! Now I see it talked about as a rpg strategy game, so it's more along the lines of something like Fire Emblem, correct? The strategy fighting with the rpg leveling upness?

Yes, it's definitely Sega's answer to Fire Emblem. And to be fair, though I don't like the games as much as Fire Emblem, I also haven't played the early FE's, so the SF games may even be better than their contemporaries, despite being, to an extent, knock-offs (hey, it didn't stop Neutopia from rocking my socks, so I don't consider it an insult).

Military Madness is fun, has it's limitations, but it's pretty fun. But, as mentioned by longtimegamer, there is a WiiWare version coming out. Mecho Wars looks good, I just hope it's not another Eternity's Child.
I've only played the first Shining Force as I don't see enough of a difference to warrant buying the game again. I've heard 2 is better, don't get both.
Also, NL has reviews on all these games, just use the search function at the top of the page ^^

Get Shining Force and then Shining Force II. They are both amazing games but you have to play the first one first. Not because of story but because the sequal improves on it so much it makes the first one seem inferior.

I like the much better than FE games myself.

Shining Force is great but I think one of the most underrated games on VC is Genghis Khan 2. That was one of my favorites growing up. Some say the KOEI games were too menu heavy, but I understood the game just fine. Easy to find a guide anyway. One of my favorite things about this game is your leaders age and die, but one of your sons can become your successor. There are quite a few army units to choose from as well. Very good game.

Shining Force supposedly took inspiration from Fire Emblem Gaiden, which had some exploration scenes, and I believe it was possible to replay some scenes, so you could grind EXP.
But I got to the end of the first chapter and stopped after getting killed too many times in the same fight.

You can essentially grind in the game by killing all but one enemy and then use egress to warp back to town. once you go back to the battlefield, all the enemies will be back again.
