Topic: SMG2 Gripes - I Love The Game, But...

I think SMG2 is amazing, but the Fluzzard and Super Monkey Ball galaxies are awful. I hate it when I have to stop using the nunchuk for control. Ugh, bad idea. It would have been way more fun to control Fluzzard and the ball with the nunchuk instead of awkwardly maneuvering the Wiimote.

Gobblegut - Bowser was way easier than him. I beat the final Bowser my first time meeting him without dying, but Gobblegut had me tearing my hair out.

I guess a game is only perfect in the eye of the beholder.

@V8 Ninja Spot on regarding 'eye of the beholder', because whilst I found the rolling ball to be lotsa fun and Fluzzard is one of my favourite levels in the entire game, it was Spring Mario which drove me nuts and made me cuss at my TV!

I am passionate about retro gaming, from antiquated consoles to the continuation of classics. Obviously I love PSone, and PS2 retro games. I blast my ears to breakneck melodic punk, gruff vocals and nimble alternative guitar hooks.

I really liked the rolling ball and Fluzzard levels, but I've always hated the damn spring!

Warning: This post contains spoilers

I loved the rolling ball, Fluzzard, I even liked the spring. I loved all the power-ups. The only thing I didn't like about this game is that with it's new 2-3 Stars per galaxy structure, it sometimes felt like some really cool ideas weren't being fully explored. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing - it speaks volumes of the game's scope if even after two 120-star games it still feels like there's avenues to be explored (I for one would not complain if we see a Super Mario Galaxy 3) - but there were several really cool galaxies that I'd've liked to have seen more of, even after collecting the Green Stars. Boo Mario's potential, for example, still remains firmly untapped after making very few appearances in the first game and then (iirc) just one or two appearances here. And as awesome as Throwback Galaxy was, I couldn't help but feel that it would've been even cooler (and perfectly feasible, given SM64's smaller stages) if it'd been a planetary hop through 3 to 4 of SM64's stages, rather than just Thwomp's Fortress (but again, not that I'm complaining)

I think that @Raylax was wise to include a spoiler warning with his comment, I extend that warning to my point in this comment right here. If you have not yet finished Super Mario Galaxy 2, then what we are discussing is my favourite surprise in the entire game and you will be better off discovering it for yourself.

I have completed it, albeit with a measly 79 stars gained and I agree completely with Raylax;
I would buy an entire game based upon the concept which he discusses in his final sentence (above). 'A Best of 3D Mario' game, with Galaxy's controls, physics and power-ups would be awesome!!!

I feel even with the new levels, it's too much like the original.

I miss having a chatroom that was always in beta.

Haha, Galaxy 2 is so packed with neat ideas that nearly anything you could say about it would be spoiler territory. So, spoiler warning again. I would've also loved to have seen more of the rhythm-based galaxies like Flash Black (one of my favourite galaxies in the game, coincidentally), to see what else they could do with the timed changes asides switching blocks/gravity and stage visibility. And more Dash Pepper/Bulb Fruit Yoshi stages please. Actually, it'd be nice to see Nintendo combine some of it's ideas, since each galaxy tends to focus on one feature and rarely mixes them together. For example, let's have Dash Pepper Yoshi attempt to speed through a stage where certain blocks switch in an out of existance to the beat of the music.
One other minor thing was the world map. Don't get me wrong, again I love it far more than Galaxy 1's hub, but because of the way they were laid out, you ended up visiting every single galaxy before the final boss at least once. I normally like to leave a few galaxies aside so I've still got completely new places to explore after the credits have rolled. World S remedied this someone, I'll admit, but they were more micro 'challenge' galaxies than the more explorable ones in Worlds 1 to 6.
Again, minor little 'gripes' that don't even come close to leaving a bad mark on the overall impression on this game, it's still the best thing I've played in a long time.

I'm personally a big fan of the fluzzard and rolling ball levels. I really can't imagine them being any fun without the motion controls

I loved the ball levels. I wish they kept that weird ray thing in instead of Fluzzard.
The things I hate most about the game is what all they took out. Why would you take out the Ice Flour, Ray thing, Flying Power, and put the rest of the power ups in like 2 levels which are barely ever used? But if they weren't there in the first place, I wouldn't have anything to get mad about. No game is perfect, and no game will ever be perfect.

Fluzzard looked great but analog controll would have been so much better. I personally find spring mario easy to control.

I like the rolling ball, although the stages could have been much harder. Fluzzard was not that great, because it felt strange that the only way to speed up was to go down.

Spoiler Warning

I disliked some of the green stars. They were the worst part of SMG2. Not because they were hard, but because the screen goes 2D while the star is in 3D. In that way, I couldn't see any depth, so sometimes I passed the star while I would have had it if everything was 2D. Examples: Flipsville 3rd green star and Yoshi Falls (don't know the exact name) the 2nd green star.
Star # 242 is challenging but daredevil feels cheap... very cheap.

Ha! thats funny! I would have liked to have seen more ball rolling action personally!

I really think the genius of the game is that they don't stick with any one idea for too long. So, if you don't like a concept, it wouldn't be long until you were out of it.

SPOILER WARNING

While I loved the main game, the game went from masterpiece to "OMG-Best-of-All-Time" when I got to the green stars. The whole green stars for me just took the game to another level.

Here's my take: Green Star challenge = awesome.
What they took out was fully explored in the first game, I mean what else could you do with the ice flower that wasn't done? or Ray? But I'd have to agree that the Boo Mushroom wasn't used fully, and I didn't care for the so called World Map, I much prefer the hub. And I have to agree with Raylax that some more Throwback levels would have been totally amazing. But otherwise, this game is still the best Mario, uh I mean LUIGI adventure yet.

It's a me, Luigi!

I personally think the green stars are the worst part of smg2. Mainly because 3/4 of them were easy and the depth problem. They should have made the main stars harder and hide the green stars 10x better e.g. not have the camera at the intro point where they were.
