Yeah, I think I heard on a Nintendo podcast (can't remember if it was GoNintendo or IGN NVC), but they were talking about Super Mario Galaxy 2 and how the first level was 2-D and then moved into 3-D. Seeing the castle in the background makes me think it is just the start of the game.

huh. actually what i find more interesting than the 2D aspect of it is that those strange mountains that have always been in the background are now revealed to be real mountains made of rock... just covered with... colorful... something. that just made the Mushroom Kingdom feel so much more real to me.

Wouldn't be surprised if that was the case. It makes sense why the game would start off like that; it would teach the player the basic techniques and then let them use those techniques in a 3D environment. In a sense, it's almost a genius strategy for teaching the player the basics since he/she doesn't have to worry about another dimension.
