I cant wait to get my hands on this game! I've been dying for a decent flight on Wii since the system came out, and I love the Ace Combat series. Hopefully I'll be able to get it tomorrow.
The one thing I will say ... there are a handful of "dog fight only" stages, but there are also several stages where you have to engage ground forces. I won't say anymore as to not reveal any spoilers.
Having played through the entire game now (even though I have not finished it), I think I'd rate this game an 8/10. There is a scoring/rating system (S,A,B,C) and a total number of points you've earned. The game does keep a surprising amount of stats (total number of air and ground kills, total number of kills done using the tactical maneuver command, number of times the game was played through, etc) and you can even win medals (though I have not seemed to earn any my first time through the game) ... so I think the replayability is definitely there.

Finally beat the game. 5 S ratings from the 17 missions on Easy. For the life of me, I can't get an S rating on the first mission (must be lacking a good enough time to completion).
My favorite plane so far is the Incident (orange paint scheme). I should have been a Lautern pilot. By my count, looks like there are 20 total planes.

Yup, there are 20 planes. I've now beaten the game on easy and normal, am on the last mission on hard, have unlocked all the planes, and gotten a few metals. I still have quite a few paint schemes and plane parts to get though. I also unlocked the extra mission thing I mentioned earlier. It is basically an endurance, pitting you against 100 enemy planes. My favorite plane is either the Skyly D or Sanka Mark B, but seeing as they are ridiculously overpowered I won't count them. So my favorite then is definitely the Sanka Mark ll.

Looking at the Nintendo channel, it shows that I beat the game on Easy in 5 sessions in 11.5 hours. That isn't a straight playthrough, as I redid several missions for higher ratings The last stage can take up to 40 minutes if you go the entire distance. The first stage, once you know what you have to do, and know the layout you can complete in under 2 minutes (my fastest time is around 100 seconds). However there is a lot of replayability. There are three initial difficulties with a supposed fourth unlockable difficulty. There is also a rating system (S/A/B/C) which unlocks planes, weapons, and plane modifications so if you want to complete the entire game, you'll run through the game at least once and use the Free Play to make an "S" ranking on all the missions. Plus, I'm not sure what it takes to open the Endurance mission, but I'm going to take a guess that you need to beat the game on two difficulty settings.
HH: What setup are you using to defeat the last portion of the final stage?

You are correct in that you unlock the endurance mission by beating it on two difficulties, there also is a fourth difficulty which I just unlocked. I also don't really have a favorite plane anymore, thanks to me unlocking different plane parts, a lot of them are really similar stat wise. So whichever one I happen to be using at the time is my favorite since a lot of them are cool.
And what do you mean by setup? If you mean control type, I use normal. If you mean plane, I think I've used a different one each time I've played through the story. I've used the Sanka Mark ll, Skyly D, and Sanka Mark B. As my secondary weapons I think I've used the shotgun once and the mini-gun twice.
HH, yeah I meant plane setup. I finally got the twirp using the Incident with a little extra added armor and a weapons upgrade. I was using the mini-gun as my secondary weapon.

I am a huge fan of this genre and WWII type planes the fact that this is fantasy planes just makes it all the better for me! I have all the planes unlocked and maxed out as best I get, I love how fluid the high end ones are! I love the story and Orishina she makes me hot even though she is crazee, felt terrible for killing Kaida but I did not hestitate even though he was right.
Some reviewers called it boring, but not to me, I love it. My only gripe is why not make the planes more colorful? The graphics are ok overall, nothing knock out, but the planes are kinda dull colored....oh well!

I used GC controllerr it is excellent never even tryed the wii one!
I wanted to shoot Maumi Oshina down the minute they introduced her into the storyline!
I have yet to get an S ranking on all the stages so I have not unlocked every feature for every plane yet. I would definitely give the WiiMote controls a try ... it's a pretty cool experience IMO. I hope other flight games in the future have similar controls.

I fell in love with this game when me and Oshina got to go on a date with our new hot experimental planes and shoot paintballs at each other - and she is so crazy she would rather shoot me than shoot down the enemy when we are attacked!
LOL!
If someone had an Oshina avatar on this site I would probably fall in love with them just kidding! But it did make the game fun!

LOL. Yah, she was a bit of a rube. It's really too bad you couldn't shoot down your squad mates and alter the storyline!

I have a while to go until I get all S ranks, at least on all the difficulties. Otherwise, I think I have only 1 to go, but I haven't played it in a while.
@Starscream: Glad you enjoyed the game. I really liked the planes. They were definitely WWII inspired, but they weren't restricted by history, and were thus very fresh and interesting. You should also really try the Wii controls. I tried the Classic Controller setup and I really didn't like it. It felt a lot more restricted and stiff.
