Topic: Rechargable Batteries - What da most rewarding option?

I've gone too long replacing my Wiimote batteries with yer average, I need rechargeables. I'm guessing there's gotta be plenty of people here with something to say on what a reliable solution is. Should I go with a Wiimote Charge Dock dealy? Any experience with 15 minute rechargeables? I'd prefer the latter so I can use it in other stuff but... the Wiimote issue is the main focus.

Drop some knowledge, my dear.

I have heard to many negative story's about Wiimote docking stations frying remotes/not working etc. so I opted for the traditional rechargeable batteries and charger, I found this to not only be a cheaper option, but it works perfectly and I can charge a spare set of batteries whilst I use a set so I don't have to start scavanging around taking batteries from my TV remote controls anymore.

Incidentally did you know that a set of batteries that your Wiimote says are dead will power a TV/DVD/etc remote for over a year, Wiimotes are battery hogs.

the regular rechargable batteries might be a good thing to look into, since you'll get to keep your normal battery cover, but it will involve removing the remote from the sleeve and motion plus (if you use those things) and taking the battery cover off every time. also, i think nintendo warns against certain types of rechargable batteries, so you may check the manual before buying a set.

the nyko charger is the best selling so far for a reason; it's cheap, simple and works well, you just have to make sure the metal contacts of the battery pack don't get flattened and fail to make contact with the remote's contacts. this happened to me, and it made it seem like the battery was completely dead. it's easy to fix if you take a key or some other small object and bend the contacts outward again. the charger also has a habit of telling you the remote is done charging when it's obviously not, like 5 minutes after you set it into the cradle. all in all though, it works just fine. the battery cover is a little larger than the wii one and has a nice rubber grip, so if you play without the sleeve on it feels more comfortable. if you play with the sleeve on or want to use the wheel or zapper though, it's a pain since it makes the remote harder to fit.

i got the energizer flat pad charger recently, which uses induction charging so that you can leave the sleeves/motion plus on. i've used it for a week with absolutely no problems at all, it doesn't take too long to recharge, you get a battery cover similar to the original wii one (although it has a big stupid energizer logo on it), it hasn't once falsely told me the remote was charged. it's $10 more than the nyko, but it's worth it to be able to drop the remote down without having to fiddle with it. it's actually kind of fun to use

nyko has also made an induction charger which is very well regarded so far. i'd go for either that or the energizer, depending on which appeals to your taste more. be warned that the nyko induction charger uses the same oversized rubber battery covers.

@romulux Oh man that energizer-induction-charger looks sweet.I'm definetly getting one of those. I'm still using normal AA batteries and boy do I get through lot of those so this would probably pay for itself quickly, plus it looks cool as ..... Cheers for the link man.

What's this bit for again?

LzWinky

After an idiot I know broke one of my rechargable packs, I just stuck with regular rechargable AA batteries. They're about the same price as the (not so crappy) rechargable stations and they can be used in other devices (that use AA batteries of course) as well

I was going through a pair of batteries every other week, so I spent about $25 on a Duracell charger and five or six sets of batteries. (I have a bunch of remotes; one that I leave in the Wii Wheel.) That was eight months ago. Batteries are no longer an issue. I always have one charged set available, ready to swap in for a dying set, and I just recharge the dying ones overnight.

I have had the Nyko dock for almost 2 years (since i got my wii)with no issues whatsoever. haven't had to open the battery cover once since i put the rechargeable batteries in...i just place the wiimotes on the dock when i'm done with them and they're good to go.

I have a battery pack for my Wii that charges through USB. Got it about 6 months ago so I'm not sure who produced it; only cost me £5!

what's really cool is that it's only 1/4" thick, i was surprised how thin it was when i took it out of the box. you can't possibly get a more compact charger, if space is an issue.

I have the Nyko dock, and the batteries last a while. If I actually remembered to put them in the dock when I was done with my Wii, I don't think I'd ever have them die. They last a while though, so a lot of times I just say screw it until they die a week later. If you just let them charge overnight you're are fine.

I am way too lazy to think of something clever.

Don't get a Wii remote charger, just get battery chargers/ rechargeable batteries.. The Wii remote chargers break easily.

Is it after 9PM EST? You should probably ignore the above post.

You should defindently get the Nyko Charger. It's very reliable, plus you don't have to use a USB Port, which makes it even more handy. Plus it only cost $30.

I have a standard AA/AAA battery charger (also does the Sony gumstick variety from the brief time I had an MD player that used them) since I use those batteries for my remote controls, cordless phones, clocks, electric torches, etc. I'd rather that than some kind of proprietary system. Plus I can buy higher and higher capacity batteries. I normally use 2500maH batteries and they last me a few weeks for the remotes and months for the balance board.

I spent £12 on four Duracell 'Active Charge' rechargables, and they're really good. Battery life is excellent (about what you'd get from standard Duracell Ultra, which is a lot) and they'll charge in a normal charger, don't need a special Duracell one or anything.

I have one year with Duracell Active Charge too and they never failed.

Yep still sticking with my non-rechargeable Rayovacs.
Still on the same 36-pack for over 2 years now. $11

Don't buy the Nyko one, it doesn't last too long and there have been reports of some units catching fire. I had one that worked fine for about a year then all of a sudden it wouldn't fully charge the battery packs. Also the rubber-grip cover gets nasty after awhile. My brother also has a Nyko charger that isn't working right.

I recommend the Energizer Power & Play. I've had it for a few months and so far so good.

SilentJ

I bought a pack of rechargeable Energizer batteries which came with the charger. I've been using them with my Wii remotes for over a year now and they work great! I've pretty much replaced all the batteries in my home with the Energizer rechargeable batteries.

I do not own one but I would stay away from the Psyclone accessories one as they have had a few recalls on their Wii chargers overheating and causing fires as reported on the nightly news.
