Yes, I believe that it is happening. I have seen the ads from Walmart, Target and Best Buy showing the price drop. In addition to this, a friend of mine who is a store manager at GameStop recently told me that the $50 Wii price drop is definitely coming.
I think its funny how companies deny stuff like this. Like when rumors of the PS3 Slim started several months ago, with photos, Sony was denying it for the longest time.

@WolfRamHeart: I haven't talked to my manager about it yet, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if he knows it's coming, too.
I read through some of the comments on the news posts linked in the OP, and I think the people saying Nintendo is making a mistake by dropping the price are a bunch of idiots. You can't just say that "Nintendo is going back into the red ocean" or something, because it's not that simple! Microsoft and Sony have been working their way out into Nintendo's blue ocean for a while now, and they're really competing over everybody now. So the Wii only being $50 less than the PS3 or high-end 360 just looks like a horrible value at retail! This $50 drop IS necessary, and it is NOT a mistake!
But yeah, it's obvious Nintendo will announce this at TGS next week. No worries, say I.

PS3's price cut makes everything look like a horrible value. Ever since they cut the price, I have even less incentive to buy a PSP (though I need one since I've already bought 3 games for it already)
Haha at Nintendo announcing it even though everyone already knows its coming. At least they probably won't lie like Microsoft and say that the PS3's price cut had nothing to do with their pricing.

Yeah...the way I hear it, the 360 price cut was GOING to be announced at TGS, but it had to be pulled up because of Sony's cut. Which makes sense, given the awkward timing of the 360 announcement.
You have a point...the PSP truly looks insanely overpriced with the PS3 so cheap...especially the PSP Go! Only $50 less than a PS3? Yuck!
Y'know...Sony announced the Slim and price cut even though it was already well known...and they made it KNOWN that they knew it was well-known! I haven't heard anything from Nintendo about these rumors at all...jerks are WAY better at being tight-lipped. Add in a larger percentage of prospective customers who wouldn't have heard about the leaks, and an official announcement from Nintendo makes perfect sense!

The reason they would deny a price cut up until it happens, is because they don't want people who would have purchased it at the original price to hold out and wait for the cut.
I am way too lazy to think of something clever. My Backloggery
To get region exclusive games, or buy them months earlier than you otherwise could, you might not see the need but I would love to get VC and wiiware games more quickly, and would pay to do so providing its cheap enough, plus some PAL VC games run in 50hz while NTSC runa at 60hz, so I'd rather a US system for that fact alone.
I agree with Stuffgamer1, the Wii really needs a price cut. With the system being far less powerful, a lot of shovelwares, and the fact that Nintendo never really dropped the price, unless Nintendo does a price cut, they'll start to lose the lead. The price cut is necessary.
I hope you all understand what this means... The very next full week after the price cut is in effect... My Aquarium will return to first place on the WiiWare chart...
