I finally beat this game last night to complete the Operation Rainfall trilogy. I thought it was good, but definitely my least favorite of the three (with the rare opinion that The Last Story was my favorite). The masters were definitely the highlight, but I don't really see where everyone is coming from that the combat is great. I basically just mashed A over and over unless they were too pesky in which case I just chained them and yanked them to death. People complain about Zelda when you just get a new item in a dungeon and only used it in that dungeon and for that boss and then never use it again, and they want Zelda to take cues from this game. Well PT is basically like getting the hookshot in the first dungeon and then never getting another item again and using it on every boss. Anyway, I only got the B ending because I got tired of trying to remember what gifts I had already given Elena and gave up, but I think I will just watch a video on Youtube of the better endings. I basically wanted to finish it just to find out what happens. I can watch a video to see that and don't need to play again.
The combat is pretty plain when you are up against single enemies, but I thought it was really good once you had to face two. Then, you can't camp and charge your chain, and if you don't charge it and try to bind one enemy, it won't last long. So you had to be efficient in your timing, and use the throws and swinging attacks effectively.
The Oraclos chain is way more powerful than the hookshot in Zelda. It can restrain enemies, damage them, latch onto surfaces, grab objects, and solve puzzles. Not to mention the moveset you have access to in combat.

Yeah, the chain is obviously more powerful than the hookshot, I was just saying it would have been nice to have more items to make combat and puzzles a little more varied. And the combat wasn't entirely bad, I just don't understand the opinion that it was amazing like some people were saying (it definitely got more difficult with multiple enemies, but even then I often just had to throw in a periodic Z press to dodge and then continue to mash A). Not a bad game by any means, I think I was just expecting more variety. The worst offender was acting like there were 13 unique Towers, but practically there were only 6 (6-10 just copied the same motifs from 1-5, and 11 & 12 were basically just one big tower, and then 13 was only a boss fight).
So I just finished Shadow of the Colossus, and I beat Ico last year.
I have to say, at least in my experience, Pandora's Tower is a better experience. It delivers on the same implicit storytelling to give the player an emotional experience and a feeling of isolation, but it doesn't obsess itself with minimalism either. We are given plenty of story cues to frame the world around, and the mechanics are interesting enough to give us an enjoyment from the world, without interrupting the player experience.
Plz Ganbarion, make another one!

Blasphemy! No game is better than SOTC, except WW maybe..
IMO, it was just a bit TOO minimalist. I went through so much of the game without story that I sort of detached from it. The dream sequences in Pandora's tower kept me hooked onto what was going on every minute.
That said, the gameplay was great. I'm amazed how they managed to create 16 enjoyable boss fights in which only one required you to actually slash your sword.

i think the game is a masterpiece in terms of the plot. Elena is the one and only character I ever felt the need to protect in a video game. Most useless NPC in games makes me cringe but not Elena
I think it is safe to say I have the biggest Metroid collection

Wow. You, sir, have a terrible taste in games...
...Was that really called for? I mean, he mentioned two well-acclaimed games as ones he enjoys highly, and put them above an obscure Wii game everyone forgot about soon after it came out, and probably never would've cared about had it not been released in Europe a year or more before its North American release. Not to say it's bad, I haven't played it, I'm just saying that I don't think there's remotely enough evidence to judge a guy's tastes in games here.
@SoulReaper When the thread is specifically about a game, we usually let the users continue the discussion in the same thread, regardless of how old it is.
@Crow_Black Been a while since I played, but yeah, I really liked this game a lot. Kinda mixed Zelda dungeons with the atmosphere of Shadow of the Colossus, and then sprinkled a little dating sim on top. Was surprised it ended up being my favorite of the Operation Rainfall games.

Was glad to see this show up b/c I loved Pandora's Tower. Unraveling the story as you beat each tower and spending time with Elena just made for a great experience. And there's that one haunting scene where Elena seemed really out of it and was on the roof (implying she would jump), it stuck w/ me b/c that scene followed up a boss fight I had where I was cutting it REALLY close of her monster gauge running out and the screen had this pulsating effect that showed you were running out of time.
