There's one line in the review that sums up my feelings toward this review:
"...makes New SMB Wii the least essential Mario title to date."
Just replace "New SMB Wii" with The AV Club and "Mario title" with game review website on the internet.

How? Other than "I don't agree" - that doesn't count. That's your own opinion.
I actually felt, from a certain perspective, it was a well-written and accurate review. Do I agree with it? No, I love the New Mario Brothers. Is it a flawed review? No.

"Dinosaur sidekick Yoshi shows up early but mostly disappears, the Chuck Cunningham of New SMB Wii."
"Where are all the Koopas and Goombas?"
"The vibe sometimes resembles Myst more than Mario."

I think "flawed" is a polite way of putting it...
Hyperbole aside (and any good critique will include hyperbole to get across a point), how is any of that factually incorrect? I warped through a few worlds, but I've only seen Yoshi three times so far, and I'm on world 8-3. Is that enough? Well, it's entirely possible for a reviewer to think its not. Same goes for the Goombas and Koopas - there were points when I felt the game was a bit light on those critters.
Overall, the reviewer is simply claiming the game is soulless. He's done it in an engaging and well-written way, but of course because he didn't give it glowing praise it must, BY DEFAULT, be flawed.
They made it pretty clear that they found the game to lack soul, I haven't played it yet but if it's much like NSMB then it's an entirely true statement.
Then from there you come to the obvious point that soulless games offer less than similar non-soulless games, which were that the case, it'd be a spot on review.

Edit: Dang beaten to the soulless card D:
See, that's the thing. I do agree that the new Mario Brothers games do not have the same type of charm that the older ones do. It's still a very charming game, but it's... different. I can see how some people would interperate it as soulless

See, that's where I'm taking issue actually. I don't find it engaging at all, and I think it's actually quite poorly written. The genuine point (Yoshi is underused) is smothered by a contrived, inappropriate, clumsy, and inaccurate metaphor (explain to me, please, anybody, how that relates to Chuck Cunningham).
When you need to work that hard to be entertaining, you're missing the point of reviewing.
I don't doubt that he has good points he'd like to make. But that review is just a series of graceless colliding metaphors that obfuscate whatever it is he's trying to say.
I definitely see it as a flawed review. It's also interesting how many of the comments on that article are along the lines of "What the heck are you talking about?" Even the ones that agree with him.
As I said...I genuinely do think "flawed" is a polite way of appraising writing like that.
this review is terrible! not because of the score, because whoever wrote it is a bad writer! i dont care about the score, but the review sucks 1. the review jumps all over the place. ok, hes talking about the new and old ideas, then all of a sudden he talks about Yoshi and power-ups? what? 2. the guy is finding flaw in every single thing he writes, hes insulting the multiplayer because people keep tripping over each other? 3. i've seen grocery lists more informative than this review. he keeps talking about how little life there is in the worlds or some new power-up. i dont care about that! myself, not knowing much about the game past that its Mario, was confused the entire review
Heisenberg says "relax!"
