Honestly, I will never understand where these bozos are coming from. For music, film and miscellaneous crap, The AV Club is awesome. When it comes to video games, though, I don't think I've agreed with them even once.
A somewhat annoying trend when a 'big' game comes out. Everybody and their grandmother hops on the internet to review it. But then you look around on a site like Metacritic, and see some games barely getting 5 reviews. It's irksome.

..."C+"? I do not trust the opinion of any reviewer who believes that a school grading system is a good system for review scores. And then uses an entire school scene throughout the first paragraph.
"Where are all the Koopas and Goombas?" ...Was he actually playing NSMBWii at all? There's more damn Koopas here than the 2009 International Koopa Convention in Koopatown, New Koopa. Or something. Um.
Pfft - "The Ice Flower is inferior to the Fire Flower", well that isn't true as the ice flower comes in useful for creating a sliding projectile to wipe out numerous enemies, which is very helpful at certain points in the game. Not to mention frozen enemies can be used as platforms to access out of reach places.
Pfft - "Where are all the Koopas and Goombas" - Are we playing the same game and do you really want the same enemy on every single level?
Pfft - Buzz! Quiz word = B NSMB:Wii = C-
Sometimes I think reviewers go into a game with a grudge and will slate it no matter what, luckily not here at Nintendo Life though.
Somebody at Metacritic HQ should remove garbage reviews like this from their listings, I know everyone is entitled to their opinion but this review is inane and insane.
Also, this translates to a 58 according to Metacritic... the lowest score yet.
AV Club ends up giving the lowest score--often by a wide margin--pretty frequently. Sad, really. Part of why I don't feel so bad about disregarding their reviews when it comes to games.
Well I got it last Friday, played the first two levels and won't touch it anymore...
... till Christmas that is . I absolutely loved the first two levels. I really don't understand why some reviewers keeps hammering on a game being innovative or new or BS like that. What about all that generic shooters that do nothing new. If a game is fun, it doesn't matter if it's innovative or not.

What's even more sad is that many of the comments on that review reflect the same attitude as the reviewer.

I don't consider this sad, I consider this useful. It means that all these like-minded people are all locked away in one little community where we can ignore their existence and occasionally laugh at their rubbish reviews. Just think, if AV Club closed down, they'd spread out across the rest of the internet

Excellent point. May the AV Club reviewers be cursed with writer's block, and may their readers never leave that site.

I like reading these sort of reviews but I guess I am a bit sadistic like that sometimes. Its like that RE4:Wii (or was it Metroid Prime 3?) review where the reviewer based his entire criticism of the game on the controls and gave it a 4/10 or something. When "dual analogue is better for shooters than the Wii Remote" or in this case the fact that its a 2D Mario are the best criticisms people can come up with then the game is a winner especially if the reviewer is from a no-name site.
I don't need this dude to give it a good score to make me happy with the game. The fact that he has written this review just confirms in my mind that I am not the most pathetic person on the planet.

An opinion is only respectable if it can be defended. Respect people, not opinions

Still...it's up for discussion.
I always agree with their music and movie reviews. Never even realized they did game reviews. Apparently I wasn't missing much.

They go by the system that an A = 100, C = 50, and F= 0, then spread the other grades around evenly. It wouldn't make sense for a game that gets an F to have the same score as "average" games on Metacritic.
At least this reviewer isn't the idiot at Game Revolution who gave TMNT: Smash-up an F (0 on Metacritic) when everyone else gave it a score between 50 and 83.
Ash: Professor Oak, how's your Bulbasaur?
Prof. Oak: Oh, it only hurts when I sit.
...
Prof. Oak: It's only Chansey if Krabby won't let go. Bye, now.
Ash: I don't think I'm going to call him anymore.
