On the 30th of October Nintendo filed a trademark for "Nintendo Zii".
No, that’s not a typo. Nintendo filed a trademark for “Zii” in Japan for use with video games and other electronic devices.
Paperwork for the trademark went through on October 30, 2009 and just released in the Japanese trademark database today. Seems kind of late to protect Wii typos since the console is three years old…
That's odd...not the fact that Nintendo would want to trademark the name itself, but the fact that it's already someone else's trademark. I should be VERY interested to see where this goes...
My Backloggery Updated sporadically. Got my important online ID's on there, anyway. :P
Could it have something to do with the Zii device itself? One of the quotes on the homepage for zii.com rather cryptically states "This endorsement from a videogames company looks like a good first step." Could that videogames company be the big N?
@NeoRausch: Apparantly StemCell Processors are called that because they're built in a similar way to actual stem cells. I thought it was just some stange scientific tool at first, but it seems not, it's just the name of the processor. http://ziirocks.wordpress.com/2009/08/11/what-is-a-stemcell-c... It sounds pretty damn funky, actually.
And, y'know, it could be a good step for Nintendo. This is a device targeted at open development. On the Wii and DS, Nintendo have done everything they can to stop open development altogether on those platforms, blocking the Homebrew Channel on Wii and flashcarts on the DSi. But they must see the popularity of homebrew in both these systems, and the popularity of Microsoft's XNA. This could be their first steps into open development available for a Nintendo console - endorse someone else, learn the ropes, and then next console generation... who knows?
If this has something to do with the Creative Zii/Zii Egg/Zii Trinity then that's pretty cool but, as always, until Nintendo confirm I am not convinced that's what this is. The Zii platform is designed to be an iPhone/iPod Touch competitor so if Nintendo are working with Creative on this then it would be a DS successor not a Wii successor. Why would they make a DS successor sound similar to the Wii?
It sounds a bit sus though. The last time Nintendo went joint into development with something like this the Playstation was the result.....
Wow.. It has been a long time since a TV type console was made from Nintendo.. How many DS systems were created in the time of the Wii? And it could be trying to compete with the XBox's new copy of Wii, progect Natal.
I don't follow. The DS has had 3 revisions, which is the same as the GBA had. And the Wii came out in 2006, so it's only been around for 3 years. By comparison, Gamecube ran for about 6 years and the N64 for 5. Wii hasn't been around long at all.
I have 2 guesses. Zelda ... To appeal to a new audience, if you just call it Z and put two ii's after it, then maybe a nongamer might be attracted to getting this game. OR, what if in the new Zelda game, you can play with Link saving Zelda or, you can play with your Mii and save Zii a princess that you create. Any thoughts?
