Nice article and good points. I almost wish Nintendo would try harder to alienate the self-declared "hardcore" just so they move on and I don't have to hear them complain any more!
I have nothing really against the hardcore section of the gaming community, but I don't like the sweaty plamed, isolationalism SOME (not all) of them WANT from the rest of the gaming world.
That was a interesting read.
"They say video games are bad for you? That's what they said about rock n' roll."
That is a good article. I dont know how it was in your countries but here in germany there were no hardcore or casual games till the Wii. There were just good and entertaining games and bad ones.
I dont see any relation between games for "mature players" and games for "hardcore players", I dont see any single relation between blood, gore, sex, horror games with hardcore oriented games, IMO the article is 100% wrong.

That's always been the problem with "hardcore" - the definition varies on depending who you ask.

I always just though anybody who spent the better part of there free time playing video games is a hardcore gamer. it doesn't matter what video game......

Exactly. A casual game is one that can be picked up and played for twenty minutes here or thirty minutes there and the overall game wouldn't suffer for it. Examples of this would be a race or two on Mario Kart or a thirty-minute workout on EA Active. A hardcore game would be one that I would have to sit down and dedicate my full attention to for a few hours at a time, such as completing a quest in Fallout 3.
I define "gamers" similarly. Casual gamers tend to play games sporadically for a small amount of time in a day/week. A hardcore gamer would be immersed in games for a noticeably larger amount of time.
edit: (excerpt) ...Don't be fooled by the kiddy exterior -- Mario is more hardcore than a dozen Marcus Fenixes...
An interesting read, but I have trouble reading things like this. The definition of "hardcore" is so befuddled I find most of these types of articles pointless. Not only that, but I am so sick of reading the word "hardcore."

So, does that mean that I am hardcore for playing Dora The freak Explorer with my little brother?
I don't understand why people are starting to get confused over something that's been well known and widely established for decades - "hardcore gamer" = "NERD". Prain an seempoo, ahhhh.

That was a pretty interesting article, very well written and took a very unique perspective. I liked his points that most well-rounded adults can enjoy more than just sex, cursing and violence in their entertainment--there's a reason why Pixar has such a huge adult following. I wrote a similar-ish article for the site I write for about why these third party Wii games don't sell: http://www.gameobserver.com/features/inside/all-platforms/why... I'm not trying to plug myself or anything, but any point I might have made here is already there in that article.

Well, if now we consider any past, present or future Mario a harcore game ... It is interesting the fact that "hardcore player" definition debate exist only on Wii forums, seems that everywhere else the concept is quite quite clear and quite aligned with Magi's definition. Next you would do is to define some Flash-games as hardcore ones, and hardcore players these playing these Flash-mini games. Probably Windows Solitaire is also a hardcore game for many of you, right?
@Mandoble: You didn't seem to read the article. Nowhere does it say that hardcore games and mature games are mutually exclusive. Also you yourself seem to be confused at the use of "hardcore gamer" and it's debated on pretty much every gaming forum there is.
This is a great article. IGN posted a similar article too though they don't seem to have the same grasp on what a hardcore gamer truly is. I think much of the problem is the word hardcore just doesn't define what the term hardcore gamer truly is. A hardcore gamer isn't a gamer who only plays violent games much like a hardcore game doesn't need sex in it. The article clears it up. If gaming is something you do regularly, if you read gaming forums, if you play for hours at a time you are hardcore.
These so called "Mature" games are really more immature than anything else. Much like the kids I see everyday working towards their certificate in construction, welding, plumbing, etc use the work F&#&#N to describe every action they do. It's immature and uneducated. I don't have an issue with violence, swearing, or sex but it's just cheapened and used in games to appeal to the naive and impressionable youth. All these mature themes can be very powerful if used carefully and in moderation but when they spray them at you with a machine gun they lose all their power.
Give me more fun, challenging, epic games with great music, art, and control and I'll be happy forever.
I'd also like to add that the Wii is the only console that non-gaming adults take seriously. There is no shame in owning a Wii and while gaming acceptance has grown astronomically in the last five years there's still a somewhat downward look on PS3 & 360 gamers. Gaming when viewed as a hobby is usually considered a waste of time (and it kind of is) but the Wii being often viewed as casual has a less harsh reputation. It's comparable to having a bunch of board games you pull out to entertain friends. It's social gaming at it's finest and something severely lacking on the other consoles.
