Did some research. In November 2007 HDTV penetration in the US was at 13% and in November 2008 it was at 23%. From memory when the Wii launched that number was closer to 5%. The 1 in 20 people who would see the benefits of a HD console has now grown to at least 1 in 4. Of course the next Nintendo console will be HD.

As for if it will come out in 2011 or not... I think by the time most people have HD capable sets it would make sense to release a HD capable revision but having said that.... 2/3 people with HD sets don't watch any HD content. The demand for a HD "Wii" isn't anywhere near as great as our small tech-loving part of the market wants to think and personally I think there is a lot more unused potential before a HD revision is absolutely 100% necessary. I also think that given level of detail current consoles can reach and the price of them the console revision cycles will have to be longer than they were previously. I don't expect the next gen to start tomorrow and I would think the gen after that will be even longer after that again.

Yea, emmm, I don't think this is the case. As it stands nintendo is in a tight spot. How do you re-sell something the casuals already have but shinier? I think it will be a DSi type move. As it stands, nintendo benefit far to much from staying with the wii.

Probably get software that is Wii2 enhanced.... Christ!

Count me amongst the "HD-capable-but-just-don't-care" crowd. If Nintendo releases a system with HDMI-out, that in-and-of itself just isn't a selling point for me.

I don't believe Nintendo would do something like that, especially since the Wii still has a lot of life in it. I say the the next Nintendo console wont come out until somewhere between 2012-2013, judging on how well its doing, and the increase in 3rd party support.

the only thing making the wii look attractive at it's current price is the motion control; you can get a PS3 with HD graphics, better online services, a hard drive, and the ability to play blue ray movies for $50 more; those features are absolutely worth the extra money. factor in that sony has ripped off the wii remote with their own forthcoming copy (complete with 1:1 accuracy), and soon the wii will be unable to compete.

Roughly 25% of the population of the U.S. own HD enabled televisions, now, that percent will increase dramatically in the coming years. However, how many of that do you think actually watch HD? Not very many. But seeing as how we're looking at the present, more than 75% will not care about the HD graphics or the Blu-Ray player. I personally hate Blu-Ray(!!!), it is just a small improvement that makes you pay $5-$15 more than a regular DVD. They are even re-releasing old movies for the price of a new movie! Ridiculousness!!
Furthermore, it is also a small percentage that bother to take their Wii online and so why would they care about improved online?? Or even the hard drive (which is old technology and will eventually be replaced by solid state or something like it) to download all of those downloadable games? Why have something that you're not even gonna use?
The point I'm trying to make is that you should look at the statistical stand-point which will eventually be the deciding factor in the what and when of the next Nintendo console. For those clever enough to notice, I did leave something out. The software is a large profit from a console so you will want to look at what part of the market will be buying the most games and do comparisons on whether it is more profitable to appeal to the larger market or the smaller one. As you can see, it gets quite complicated.
As for Sony's controller, we'll just have to wait and see.

I think the possibility of Wii HD sounds awesome. HDTV is amazing, I really have to enjoy a show now to watch it is standard definition. Really, the only show I watch now that isn't in HD is "The Soup", and that is because our cable company doesn't offer "E! HD" at the moment.

As long as it's backwards compatible with the Wii games and I can transfer my VC games onto it, I'm good!

you're right that there may not be many people who would take advantage of those features if the wii included them; i myself don't care about any of the PS3's fancy abilities. my point is that regardless of whether people really want the HD graphics, a blue ray player, or hard drive, the PS3 has them without costing much more than the wii. how can nintendo justify selling a system with so much less (from a purely technical standpoint) for nearly the same amount? it's just not a good value anymore. again, i agree with you that the wii has more than enough features to satisfy most, but that doesn't mean it's automatically justified at any price.

sony has always done a good job of ripping nintendo's controllers off in the past and i assume this new 'wand' remote will be no exception. it may even be better, since you won't have to deal with a loose wobbly motion plus attachment. whether it will actually wind up drawing casual customers away from the wii is something that remains to be seen, but again, it will take away the last unique feature of the wii and leave the system with no advantage over the competition other than it's games... and i don't know how much more mario, zelda, and metroid the system can rely on.

i'm no expert, but looking at the trends it seems that if nintendo continues down this path the end outcome will probably be that microsoft finishes third (i don't think project natal will help), nintendo comes in second after an extremely successful run, and sony takes the lead. i haven't heard anyone offer any ideas as to how nintendo will remain competitive for the next years down the road without a new system; they've already enhanced the controller, cut the price, and have as good a lineup of games over the next year or so as you could hope for.

You're wrong. Nintendo will take the lead. And it will be because of the Vitality Sensor!

damn, i forgot about that. it won't really take off until they release the vitality sensor plus, though.

I don't think that the vitality sensor will be that great unless it's for workout purposes. My reason is because I don't get over excited, or scared, or anything like that that would change my heart rate usually from a a video game. I used to but I got used to "really intense" games. I think the only game I ever got really freaked out with was the Silent Hill and Resident Evil games and that was like 4 or 5 years ago when I was in 7th grade and I got RE4 like a week after it came out bacause I saw it on the front of Nintendo Power and was like,"Oh ya I saw this somewhere", and I decided to get it with my dad not knowing what he was getting me but still decided to get it for me and I freaked out when I played it, but by the time I was at the castle which was like a week or so later, I loved the game and was having alot of fun with it. You don't know how hard that game was for me the first time through. Now it's like a cakewalk:) My friend ran through the whole thing in 12 seconds less to 3 hours of play time which is pretty crazy I guess, but then it's not that fun... sorry for my useless/boring post if you thought so but I could go on.

the motion sensors for sony and microsoft, IMO, will ultimately, fail. my explanation why is kinda vague, but i know they will

I just think they added the motion too late in the life cycle of the systems, but compared to the Wii the have alot of more years which will force Nintendo to make a new console that SHOULD still have some sort of control scheme that can either compete or just completely beat them out and STILL have a strong sytem that Should either Compete or completely beat them. Wouldn't it be nice if the console wars were over and someone just showed that they were better than everyone by completely beating everyone else? But then it depends on the audience also so I guess that once the wars are over the companies will cater to a croud and stop fighting with someone they cant compete with because of a different audience. It's all in what people want and what people create and not worring about what someone else creates and trying to get an audience they can't please.

Don't delude yourselves people HD is entirely worth the effort. There is a clear and noticeable difference between HD and non-HD content. The problem is that the end result is the same most of the time. Its nice but for most people its not a system seller. Case and point: look at how many people rip their music at 128kbps even though there is a clear difference between 128kbps and 320kbps and they have ample space

and @Ravage way to re-state what I said and then miss the point entirely

I'm one that demands HD for the Wii. I love HD, I've been using a SD TV for the past few months and I don't like it. Playing my favorite Wii games in HD would be awesome.

Yeah, I can't plug up my wii to my HDTV, it just doesn't work (the tv is also like 60 inches, so the sensor-bar has trouble with the IR pointer on the periphery). The graphics just look better on my SDTV too. I think it would be sweet to have HD, plus a sensor bar that can accommodate wider TVs.

I will sometimes hook it up and play NES games on the HDTV. That's always a good time.

I am way too lazy to think of something clever.

I don't get it, Couldn't they just make HDTV's with smaller pixels on the screen so it would be a smaller screen?

I just hope they don't do the NATAL thing. It's impressive, but I don't think I'd like to use it.
