I'd say they do what they did with the GameCube to the Wii. Add some enhancements, reshape it, and say it's something new.

Although I'm mostly kidding, I'm doubting they'll actually do much other than make it HD, give it a hard drive, and improve the accuracy of the motion controls. Oh, and probably make the system itself physically smaller.
All I know is that they'll keep the Wii name. I'd say most of the "new audience" likely know about Wii and DS but not so much Nintendo.

Maybe the next one will actually do 3D. They just need to do it right this time. Some of the things that I believe didn't help the virtualboy are: Red screen (guess it could be hard on eyes), waay to many warnings (actually don't know if this really made things worse, but they shouldn't have put out something that needed so many warnings.), you had to set it on the table because it was too heavy, I guess, to just wear on your face, PLUS noone else could watch what you were playing. (I don't recall if you could play against others.)
I still think that 3d will make a comeback in the console market and eventually stay, just like the analog and rumble and more than likely the motion sensing.

By 2011 the cost of high performance memory, cpus and gpus will be way lower than today. If they want to release something for 250€ by 2011 it should be way way more powerfull than current PS3 in all and every aspect. Same rule would apply for potential 2011/12 new Sony or MS consoles. I would never expect just only HD for any new "Wii" in 2011, unless they sell it lower than 100€.

What ever Nintendo's next console will be, I bet it will be cool.

I think they reffer it is a sequel in heart to the Wii. Imagine Xbox live-ish capabilities, with many new features. Continuation of Virtual Console. Backwards capabilities, lotsa power. Better graphics. Still 250. Enhanced Wii Menu. Motion Plus Nunchuk. Not much bigger than the Wii. 6 controler capability. New pack-in. Comes with a set of peripherals (wii wheel, Zapper). Wireless Nunchuk. Free Nunchuk with Wii 2 Remote etc...

This is an ideal picture of the Wii 2/Wii HD/whatever it's gonna be called, but I seriously doubt it will still be $250.

If Sony can charge 300 for the PS3 Slim, Nintendo can make a new console 250 bucks

Both!
It's a new console that is an enhanced Wii!

Aren't we lucky?

Can't I get a real answer.....

That is a real answer. That is what we got with the Gamecube, what we are getting again.

But personally, I think this is a load of crap. Interweb liez

I don't believe Nintendo would do something like that, especially since the Wii still has a lot of life in it. I say the the next Nintendo console wont come out until somewhere between 2012-2013, judging on how well its doing, and the increase in 3rd party support.

as far as having great games in the pipeline, yes the wii has a lot of life left, but not when it comes to the competition with sony and microsoft. the only thing making the wii look attractive at it's current price is the motion control; you can get a PS3 with HD graphics, better online services, a hard drive, and the ability to play blue ray movies for $50 more; those features are absolutely worth the extra money. factor in that sony has ripped off the wii remote with their own forthcoming copy (complete with 1:1 accuracy), and soon the wii will be unable to compete. i don't like microsoft or sony, but even i would have a hard time justifying the purchase of a wii when the other systems can do everything it can, plus a whole lot of other stuff, for nearly the same price. the price drop coming up this week is a temporary way to stay competitive for a while longer, but the inevitable outcome is that eventually sony will eventually outsell the wii. in fact it's already happened in japan.

an HD system would finally stop all the talk about the wii being too weak and underpowered, while improving the remote would help nintendo remain at the forefront of motion controls. i've heard rumors of a new sensor bar with a camera like project natal's built in; that type of thing would give nintendo an edge over what either microsoft or sony are going to have. the wii will definitely remain the #1 console if nintendo can do these things.

then you have the fact that the lease on IBM's technology expires in 2011, so if they want a system that's backwards compatible with the current wii they have to release it by then, and of course it's got to be backwards compatible.

You've all missed the mark. It'll clearly be named "Wiii"

But seriously, I think the "Wii HD" would be the most logical name for it. Say it out loud. It flows! And it'll probably come with the additional functionality of the remote add-on built-in to Wii-mote. Wii plus or whatever that thingie is called.

Actually, I think the system will be called Wiin. Because the new system will be full of Win!

They could also just mean by "we'll see it in 2011," that it will be revealed in 2011. Don't they usually reveal new technologies a while before they're actually released to build up press for them? I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't actually see it on shelves until 2012 or later. Then you also need to factor in the delays that will happen between now and then. Game companies start R&D on their next gen console as soon as, or even a before, their this gen console is released, so it should be no surprise that Ninty's been working on something.

I think by 2012 it would be easily possible to put together a Wii with HD capabilities, a pretty sizable hard drive, and a Wiimotion plus enabled remote (and possibly a motion plus wireless nunchuck) for under $250, given the current HD console's prices. As far as I know, there aren't any upgrades coming to actual HD technology, so really there's not a whole lot that can be done to advance beyond what the current HD consoles have now graphics wise. There is always making a bigger hard drive and a faster processor to drive games that are bigger and more complex in areas other than graphics.

Regarding the intel technology lease, wouldn't they need to maintain that as long as wiis are in production? I wouldn't think it would matter if they released it before it runs out, as long as they want to keep producing it after 2011 (I doubt they only want to make the console for a few months) wouldn't they have to renew the lease? I'm not sure on this one, so someone who has an actual knowledge of law here or their contract can feel free to correct me.

Bottom line: my vote is it will actually be released later than 2011 and that it will be really awesome.

I am way too lazy to think of something clever.

Yeah, I agree with Strofan - there are way too many Wiis out there that have been kitted out to the max with 'motes and 'chuks and wheels and boards and zappers and and and... for Nintendo to ignore.

I'd bet they make the controllers backwards compatible to appease the current owners, but will do so in a way that makes them feel a bit uncomfortable in doing so for too long. The accessory-based revenue is too vital to ignore, or leave in the previous "generation," if it can be called such in this instance. The new controls will surely feature built-in M+ functionality, and I'd bet a first-party wireless nunchuk. Perhaps slightly updated design, or different color - you know, something to make the older ones seem a bit, well, older, and compel owners to buy the new stuff - and they will. To push this along, they'll probably include some tech like motion tracking in the new controls that would be required for some games. That'll push even the laggards to finally update their controllers.

Bottom line, WiiHD buyers probably won't have to dump all their existing controllers on day one, but sooner or later, Nintendo's gonna get 'em.

Leave it to Yoichi Wada—president of final fantasizer Square Enix, the biggest Japanese game house—to break the news about the next generation Nintendo Wii. All while predicting that Microsoft and Sony motion efforts won't be "truly successful."

Wada says that the next-generation, high definition Wii will offer the same capabilities as the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, while adding a brand new motion controller. We will have to wait till 2011 to see it, like previous rumors pointed out.

Whoever reported that is an idiot. I read the original interview and he only speculated all of this.

He also speculated that the 360 and PS3 motion controls won't be popular because they are added peripherals to systems that already do too much to begin with.

Here is the original article that apparently every gaming website misread:

http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/486a3a6c-a602-11de-8c92-00144feabdc...

"Mr Wada expected Nintendo to release a new Wii by 2011, with functionality more like that of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 or Sony’s PlayStation 3, and possibly a different controller."

That's all it says about a possible new Wii.

This is great 'news' for me as my resolve has been tested of late (the chances of me buying a PS3 recently went from 0% to a hefty 2.5%), so to know I may have a console that makes the most out of HD without having to regress back to dual-analogue or sell my soul to the devil, fills me with happiness. I can wait till 2011, I'll just waste some more money on my pc between now and then to get my graphics fix. I think this rumour could end up being quite accurate, especially the name as previously stated, it takes two household terms and joins them in a union of sexy Nintendo shiny bits. Mmmmmm.

WiiHD ftw! I look forward to the first official snippets of info.

Wow, I like how many people misinterpreted his interview. Honestly we probably won't see it until 2012.
