I got Rubiks yesterday and have played it three times. Nintendo Channel lists it as one time.

Personally I don't see what all the fuss is over the redesign. I think it sucks - not only does it look ugly but much of the content is old, some of the release date information is erroneous and the video quality is crap. Oh and the user interface is god awful.

Overall, the new design doesn't offer much over the old channel other than some sort of self-gratification through often incorrect stats and the unnerving comfort that Nintendo is asking for user feedback when anyone in their right mind knows that they rarely make any real use of it anyway.

The only good thing about this channel is the redesign might have saved some people some space. As for me, it's lasted about the same length of time on my Wii as the original - 30 minutes - and will not be returning unless there are some really good DS demos to download. I'm not anally retentive enough to give a toss about how long I've played a game for as long as I've enjoyed it.

Now Europe has every wii channel NA has plus BBC iplayer and the Wii luck channel.... great.

What is America gonna do with the iPlayer? That's Britain only I think.
Wii Luck from what I hear is pretty lousy

You guys got Bbc Iplayer which is an exclusive to NOE and we don't have any. I'd sure like an exclusive Wii channel for NOA that is good.

I disagree.

The original design threw an outdated summary video at you every time you loaded the channel. Removing that alone makes this a worthwhile upgrade. The user interface itself moves a lot more which makes it marginally more difficult to control but in other ways the UI is significantly better. The main video screen shows you decent sized thumbnails of the videos rather than just a list which makes it a lot easier on the eyes. As well as that there is a "new content" section that shows you the newest videos which is really handy.

The local stats are useful for keeping track of what games you have neglected or what game your parents appear to play while you aren't home. It would be nice if there was a section that showed you the most popular games amongst your friends but I guess there is always next time. I think the most important thing about this data is the recommendation system and for research. Are you going to spend full retail on a game that people have only spent 3hours on average playing? This is invaluable data.

Yes, the video quality isn't improved which is a shame. Some people are having problems with their old data which is again a shame. You are also right in saying that this update isn't worth much because there isn't any new content yet. With all that said, this update is a significant improvement over the old channel.

I had no issue with my data, but that may be because my Wii is relatively new (bought summer 2008) and I downloaded the Nintendo Channel immediately upon purchase. I'm pretty sure they cataloged my play data through NC use even before the update, and only showed it to me after. So everything should be 100% accurate.

In all honesty, I've never needed any application to tell which games I've neglected to play. I know which games I don't play.
I agree about removing the out-dated starting video but in all honesty the rest of the application is a buster. Like I said, I doubt Nintendo will make much use of the user feedback and considering the quantity and quality already available on the service I wouldn't recommend it as a viable source of iinformation for end users except for the most obvious game choices.

I've been playing Revenge of Shinobi for the past three days - a fact that's been totally ignored by the channel. Maybe Nintendo should stick to making casual games and ports. It's what they're good at these days. Good being the operative word.

I use last.fm for music and it does the same thing the Nintendo Channel is starting to do with games. Looking at my data I remembered that I had almost completely neglected Bit Trip Core so I played it again and past the first level.

I am sure Nintendo use this information otherwise they wouldn't put any effort into getting it. Personally I think the recommendation section is handy (even if others don't) for discovering similar games (even if I find most of it on the internet already). There could be improvement, recommending games for friends is a huge omission IMO, but the foundations are there and have been improved with this update. Anything that moves people towards away from shovelware and towards better games is a good thing. The medal system is a step in that direction.

Its not listing Y's for me, and I've been playing for ages being able to rate DS games is a nice addition though, if a little fiddly, having to turn the DS on & off for each game.

I played around with the new channel last night and I think it is a huge improvement, much easier to navigate and a lot more accessible. Good for users, and good for marketing. Nice one Ninty.

My only complaints are the video quality (I've been spoiled by iPlayer), and the horrible new logo on the Wii Menu. It used to be blue, and nice, now its all grey and cheap looking. Blek!

I decided to keep the channel on for another day, but after four days and well over four hours of playing Revenge of Shinobi the channel still doesn't recognize my activity, even though it's recorded the 1/2 hour play on PoP from last night. Another quality Nintendo channel and for those who say it's an improvement on the original. Yes it is, and Nintendo have done a great job in polishing a turd. But a turd is still a turd no matter how shiny.

DidnĀ“t see (or take notice of) any bashing on the Nintendo Channel when it was released in US. Does it work better overthere?

This is the one MAJOR flaw with the Nintendo Channel: It usually doesn't get updated with VC games anymore. I have no idea why, but it's missing about 100 games at current. That's why it doesn't recognize your play time in Revenge of Shinobi, Twisted; it doesn't recognize the game at all!

repeated question from the second page.... has anyone managed to get the DS recommendations working?

I've done a couple of them...one of the Layton games and something else I don't really recall. They worked just fine. But I have about 40 DS games, and I'm in no hurry to go through that time-consuming process with ALL of them.

ok, I guess I'll try it again later. Maybe it was just a problem on the launch day

I don't see why NOA shouldn't get bbc iplayer. There is a bbc america channel isn't there? I don't know tbh.

Anyway, I'll check this update out before commenting.

Very cool. The main thing I like is the way the little preview window tells you new shows without having to launch it, so I booted the North American Wii the other day and immediately saw there was a new Nintendo Week (that show is starting to grow on me); likewise on the Japanese system I get to know when a new Game Centre CX is on.

Whew!

not impressed since the most interesting feature for me is broken.
all my play times are incorrect.

@skywake: That may or may not help. I'm in America, so it's possible the problem actually lies with the PAL version of the Nintendo Channel.

@LEGEND MARIOID: We do get PBS and DVD releases (and more recently some streaming on Netflix), but we don't even have access to the BBC streaming website. I find it HIGHLY unlikely we'll ever get our own version of that Wii Channel.

Same here. At first I thought it was because my machine got sent off for repair and got the main board and all the flash therein replaced, but it's beyond that. I suspect the problem is that the messages, which include your daily play time messages that the Nintendo Channel uses to compile your data, get cleared out periodically; so you'll find that older playtime information is being deleted over time and therefore skewing results to reflect the most recently played games more heavily.

It's nice as a guide and I'm sure it will be good for Nintendo as current (I'm guessing your messages will cover the past year) data will be more important to their marketing teams than lifetime.

I have to say I'm really disappointed we seem to be getting jacked on the lack of increased resolution (no option for hi-res; videos are just full-screen and the same resolution as before) and my favourite videos: We Are WiiWare, seem to have been removed -- glad I took the time to watch them before the update!
