You're overreacting. No Final Fantasy characters were ever "mascots" for Sony consoles. That honour goes to Crash Bandicoot and more recently Kratos.

yeah.. i think you fail to acknowledge the fact that FF7 had more of a cultural effect and impact (esp. for future RPGs but also gaming in general) than any of those games, therefore making him (Cloud) the most known protagonist within that respectable Sony console.

That has nothing to do with anything. Sony had 2 successful consoles with formats that fit their ambitions, and FF just goes where the money goes. FF has always been on the most successful consoles, regardless of who makes said console. Square-Enix is a third party, after all, and they own their own IPs. If S-E thought there was money in putting their characters in the next SSB and Nintendo was down with it, there'd be little to no problems license-wise. In other words, it's not impossible, still unlikely, but at least there's enough of a chance to hope.
