I have never gone to Metacritic, so my basis for a game being underrated is what I see selling and what isn't selling in my area-
Opoona is just a fun, quirky RPG that can be had for less than the price of a NEO-GEO VC game at most places, sure you literally play it with one hand but then again Pac-Man was played that way too.
Geometry Wars Galaxies takes everything that was great about the 360 versions and makes them bigger and better. Just be sure to have a classic controller handy.
Deadly Creatures-think Madworld then replace the characters with insects and other animals, then throw in a story that is only told by what is going on around you and the sum total makes you wonder what really is the most Deadly Creature.

If anything NSMB Wii is overrated, IGN is on the money with their 8.9 review. Wario Land Shake it! deservs a freaking 10
Wario Land is great, but not 10-worthy. The pacing is bad, it's far too short, the shop is pointless, the music is awful, and the humor felt bland.
i thaught the music for the most part was fantastic, while some of it was bluh. The pacing was great, and no it wasn't too short. i have a feeling you skimmed right through it instead of trying to complete all of the objectives. because going for all of the objectives MAKES the game so much more enjoable and challenging. And humor bland? what the hell...so your saying Wario Land 1-4 had you laughing out of your seat?lol there was nothing there that was hilarious, and WLSI! ups it at least with Wario's ass shaking while looking into a telescope ;p Wario Land Shake it! is the best wario game to date easily and yes i do think it's a 10/10...hell i even had a better time with Super Paper Mario compared to New Super Mario Bros Wii....maybe because Super Paper Mario was actually creative, beautiful and had a different story. NSMBWii was nothing new, the graphics could of been much better, the worlds were so typical if you've played the DS version, it was too easy and they threw wayyyy too much one ups at you and even powerups. Negatives aside, i felt it was the best controlling mario, loved the motion controls, the level design was solid, it was great that the koopa kids made a come back and so on. But it felt all too familur and playing it safe especially if you've played the DS version.
Cursed Mountain. One of the better survival horror games I've played lately. Really, even if you don't like horror games I think you would like it, as it's really not that scary. More of an adventure game with some really great atmosphere.
Phantom Brave. Not even die hard NIS fans seem to know that this amazing game is on the Wii...

New Super Mario Bros. Wii- I think this game deserves to be better than rockband 2, GH5 or any of those terrible instrument-based rhythm games, but yet it only has a 87 on metacritic (I think) Most people are judging it on it's 1-player feature, in which most people who reviewed it played mostly 1-player. This game was born of greatness in multiplayer, always a blast to play co-op or against. I'm not saying it deserves all 10s, but a few points higher on metacritic would please me.
Little King's Story- Ok now this game is AMAZING. It proves that you can have a fun game on Wii without motion controls (not saying motion controls are bad, I support Wii motion controls.) Little King's Story also had a 87 on metacritic (correct me if I'm wrong please) but it deserves to be up there with Twilight Princess (a 95), it's even better! it's now among my favorite Wii games (and I have a lot of good Wii games) websites complaining about no motion controls should take a hard look at the fact that as of the game's release date all Xbox and (most) playstation games have no motion controls either. This game would get 9s and 10s from every website if they look at that fact.
Excite truck- Nintendo Power gave this game a 8.5 and they nailed it dead on. other sites and magazines, not so much. I'm not saying it's the best racing game in the world or it compares to Mario Kart 64 but it was a nice racing game. And remember this was a launch title.
Elebits/eledees- this game is so massively underrated it hurts. It had great first-person controls (unlike another launch title Red Steel which I've heard nightmares about but never played it) interesting concept and great gameplay, plus I had hours and hours of fun with the great level editor, which once you unlock the item sets it's a blast to make levels and then try them out. Ok so the voice acting is horrible, but that shouldn't take away from the game.
Trauma Center: New Blood- this game suffers from two types of awful reasons to give a bad review, but they give them bad reviews anyway because of them. 1) controls haven't changed and 2) It's ridiculously difficult. first, the controls couldn't get much easier to work with so why try something new? And two, difficulty isn't a bad thing. Just because you can't breeze through a game without failing isn't an excuse to give a bad review, which is why most games are too easy now-a-days.
There are my opinions. Flame if you want but i think I made some good points.

@Sean Aaron- I guess I need to give the default controls a go in Geometry Wars. It's just that I've been playing it for over two years on the 360 (almost daily) and just got used to the double analog control.
Also, has anyone tried Alien Syndrome? I saw it really cheap (less than a NES VC game) and wondered if it was even worth the time. The control sort of looks like the GWG default scheme.
I am the one you despise. I am he who says what you really deep down know but are affraid to admit. I am the Anti-Fanboy, the crusader of truth in a world built on your lies.
@RowdyRodimus, Sean I've got geometry wars and Alien syndrome, both underated (IMO). I started off playing GWG with the Classic Controller, but i found it too slow, I think the pointer controls work brilliantly and won't go back to the CC; a brilliant old school shooter. I quite enjoyed Alien Syndrome (i picked it up for £5), its only got an average of 48% on Metacritic, it's far better than that. If you can pick it up cheap it's a great blaster, especially with four players. The controls in it are excellent and do have similarities to the pointer controls in Geometry Wars, as long as you're using a sharpshooter character or build up ranged weapon stats. This gets a lot of unfair criticism, mainly because you start out as a really weak character, but you can build up and specialise however you want, there are loads of items and variations in stats to go for. The controls/reactions of your player visibly improve as you venture through the game, almost as if they are crap by design when you start out. No idea how many levels there are in the game, it's certainly a big game, but i;ve played it up to the end of the Kronos missions, and it seems like there's plenty more to come.
Also Mushroom Men, which I think was unfairly treated in the press and is a great game.
Agreed. Mushroom Men isn't perfect - especially the camera - but had tremendous style and was really enjoyable.
I think most "short" games are underrated by reviewers. They view an 8-10 hour adventure as a negative point, but that's more than enough gaming time for me. With less time for gaming now than in my youth, I'd much rather play a short game that is unique and creative than endure a 40+ hour title that doesn't change significantly past the first 10 hours.
JU On as well though im sure ill get slated for saying it.
Not by me. I think the problem with Ju On is that it's not a "proper" game. If you approach it expecting a Resident Evil game, then it fails massively, but as a fun little scare yourself and your friends adventure game it works a treat. I wouldn't pay full retail for it and I think there's things that could have been done better, but it's surprisingly not bad.
@Rowdy: I think what I like about the regular controls is the ease with which you can spread your shots using the remote. I never would have thought of the pointer as a replacement for an analogue knob, but Geometry Wars (and Block Breaker Deluxe, to Gameloft's credit, though I think that game is too easy and deleted it) really demonstrated it. Shame that Atari doesn't give a toss about its arcade heritage because Tempest would really play well that way.
@Davva: I've seen Alien Syndrome many times and suspected the game wasn't as bad as made out -- it's so cheap too that I might punt and pick it up next time I see it on the shelf going for pennies. If it included the original arcade game -- which I love -- I would probably have bought it long ago. Sega seems to be trickling VCA releases, so I'm hopeful Alien Syndrome will be coming in the next few months.
@ Sean Aaron One of the reasons i bought Alien Syndrome was because i also remember the original arcade game, although mainly by playing the Sega Master System and ZX Spectrum conversions back in the day. The core shoot-em up gameplay follows similar themes to the original game, but it also adds in role-playing/rogue type elements with the need to level-up characters and acquire new items and skills, i think its a good mix of styles and the challenge is well balanced throughout. Another game i think is often underrated, which I think you reviewed for this site, is Namco Museum re-mix. I really enjoyed the updated versions of the games and there was a good selection of Classic games to, although i would've preferred original Pacman to the lesser known Pacman (can't remember name) game they included. Most reviewers (not on this site) seemed to slate it because it is yet another Namco collection, rather than to properly review it.
