Wow, this thread became extremely depressing really fast. First we have Sakamoto, the director of Super Metroid, being bashed and labeled as a useless developer, and then Metroid Prime written off as a cash-in on the FPS craze. What the hell?
Super Metroid and Metroid Prime are both among the greatest games ever created. I think the thing I hate most about Other M is that it gives everyone too many excuses to be ignorant about the whole series.
To be clear, I'm excited for Other M and I've already preordered it.
I just started playing Prime Trilogy for the first time recently. I'm loving Prime even with all the getting stuck-itude. I need to finish those before I buy another Metroid. Also, since this game is a throwback to the older Metroids, I'll probably play them first (at least Super Metroid, then maybe Metroid Zero Mission instead of the original NES one, since I hear it's more user friendly). THEN I'll get Other: M, so it'll be a while. I'm not worried, I'm sure it will still be $49.99 by the time I get to it (grumble mumble, stupid Ninty, I miss price drops).
