Wii Play cost $50 and $40 cost a Wii Mote so in theory the game cost $10 as much as Downloadable Wiiware game from my point of view is worthed thanks to 3 simple and yet addicting games Tanks!, Find Mii and Pose Mii, while the other 6 are just there to keep it more interesting, personally Tanks! alone is worth 10 bucks is one of those games i keep playing over and over and over again, while Find Mii simple yet addicting idea, Pose Mii was interesting till you master it, Laser Hockey great idea but bad Control, Fishing great concept but Broken, Table Tennis is an okay game but not that competitive as the the three games i mentioned early but better then the rest, Shooting Range a cheap Duck hunt version i prefer shooting Ducks in a Arcade style way not shooting random target's in a time limit, but it's an okay game just like table tennis, Charge! is awful peroid, Billiards is the the reason why Wii Play is consider a "BAD GAME".
Wow, my opinion is pretty much exactly the opposite. I loved Charge! and Billiards. Those are my two favorites. Pose Mii and Find Mii, are horrendously bad.
Contradictory to all that I've just said, I do think that including Wii Points with a Wii Remote would've been a very good idea. Like you said, it would've garnered much more attention to the Wii Shop Channel, and perhaps Nintendo would be having greater sales on the VC and Wiiware if they had done that instead.
It would not have sold as well then, as there is no savings in paying $50 for a $10 points card and a $40 WiiMote. Wii Play is marketed as a $40 WiiMote plus 10 games for $10 more. THAT is what drove the sales, and THAT is how it was marketed. I've seen enough salespeople throw that pitch at people looking at buying a Wii to know. To people buying the package, Wii Play is a bargain because those games have a nebulous value. They MAY be worth $0.10 but then again the gem you love and play constanly is worth the $10 price point.
Marketing it as an online download also would not IMO work. Then you're asking people to do too much. Simple and to the point works. It doesn't get much simpler than putting a disc into the Wii.
What would have been a much wiser decision, in my admittedly not-so-humble opinion, would have been to include a download ticket for WP via Wii-Ware rather than a disc, thus driving attach rates to that service and all the beneficial trappings that involves (awareness, customer reinforcement, incremental revenue, better margin, etc., etc.) but I undertand that the infrastructure may not have been fully in place to support it at the time.
I agree with this concept. Although I enjoy many of Wii Play's games (Tanks, Charge, ping pong, and laser hockey) and do not regret my decision for buying it (it did include a wiimote), if Nintendo were to produce a similar deal (a wiimote with a "demo" collection), a Wiiware download would be more appropriate and more practical. The packaging would be cheaper, and the Wii Shop Channel would get some much needed promotion. In addition, it makes the overall game better. Wii Play is fun (at least for me) but usually only in short spurts. Having it on a disc makes it tiresome to switch out disc games just to play it for thirty minutes. By making it a WiiWare channel, the game could be accessed anytime more easily than before, allowing its casual playing experience to be more readily enjoyed.
One thing I do hope Nintendo does in the near future is make larger WiiWare games out of the Wii Play games. I think a deeper version of Tanks would be incredibly fun (I know Frobot will be like Tanks, but so far, it really doesn't appeal to me).
It's okay as the $10 game it effectively is, but it's not very good compared to a lot of $40-$50 games or even quite a few WiiWare games. If it were a $10 WiiWare game, I'd give a 6/10.
The only really bad games are Pose Mii (the original Muscle March) and Find Mii, although Fishing and Charge are pretty mediocre, and Table Tennis has been surpassed by the version in Wii Sports Resort. Billiards can be frustrating for some, but if you figure out how to line up the angles and put backspin on the ball to avoid scratches, it's pretty good. Shooting, Laser Hockey, and Tanks are good and become even better in multiplayer. Am I forgetting anything?

@ThomasJoseph: I see what you mean. A non-gamer or a mother shopping for their child could be confused with a Wii Points card, if they don't know how the Wii Shop Channel works yet. One important thing I forgot to consider is the fact that some people can't connect their wii to the internet. I think Nintendo made a lot of money deciding to package Wii Play with the wii remote, and I think including a Wii Points card wouldn't have resulted in as much sales.
@KnuclesSonic8: I do enjoy find mii when I'm casually playing it, but when I'm shooting for a gold or platinum medal, find mii is incredibly frustrating, at least when it reaches the later stages. I hate investing a ton of time into it, running out of time, and coming up just short of a gold medal.
@Bulbasauras: I think you listed them all. Unless I'm forgetting something too....
@Virus: Yeah, having to switch out the disc when I'm only going to play it for a few minutes is kind of frustrating. If it had been a channel, I don't think that would've resulted in the amount of sales that it ended up getting, but it would be much more convenient. I do hope they release some Wii Play games in the future on Wiiware, with a little more content and depth.
If you think New Super Mario Bros. Wii is hard, try Super Mario Bros. 3.

Having these mini-games directly on the Wii-Memory would be brilliant. I had Wii Play, but sold it, since i need space in my shelf and I just have better alternatives of mini-game collections (Wii Sports, WSR, RRR), which led to Wii Play rarely seeing the inside of my drive. A download code would be something I'd really use.
But I can't see how anyone can complain about a mini-game collection for 10$. It a bit over a dollar per game! People pay the same price (and sometimes more) for crappy games on the iPhone or iPod Touch and Wii owners are complaining about this collection. Sure none of the games is brilliant, but everyone can find something he can enjoy for short periods of times. A game like this isn't ment to be played for hours, but the games offered can be fun. I personally liked the air hockey and the tank game and would buy them as WiiWare if available at a reasonable price.
Contrary to what a lot of people have been saying, I actually love Find Mii and Shooting. Find Mii is nice because the Miis you create actually play a big role in the gameplay, and your success in one stage carries over to the next stage. Also, I just like the searching component to it.
The Shooting game can get boring if you're just shooting randomly, but if you're actually trying to get everything wihtout missing (to preserve your combos), it becomes a highly entertaining game. I think you need 500 or 600 points to get a Platinum medal, but it really gets fun when you're strategizing and timing perfectly to get 700 to 800 points.
This is a Kid Icarus Wiki I created in late October. It has developed a lot in that time, but it still has a lot of room to grow. Any help you could provide (e.g. fixing typos) would be greatly appreciated!
I am very glad I investigated this site after looking for reviews for some WiiWare games. I gave my wife Wii for Christmas in 2008. It has gotten moderate use from my son. He is autistic, and he and his visiting helper bowl about three times a week. I did buy the Wii Play for the remote...of course! But I haven't had a game system since the original Atari! So I found Play to be an excellent introduction. I doubt very seriously if NES had the serious, hardcore gamer in mind. I personally think my age group (35-50+) is who they were going after. It worked. I just bought the new Sports Resort with the Motion Plus, and bought and extra motion plus immediately! I AM NOW SOOOOOO HOOOKED!! I've got my neighbor kids coming over and not going home! ARCHERY IS THE BOMB!!...that's another story. However, I wouldn't have gotten to Resort if I hadn't. started with Play. It's great marketing. You can lead a horse to water AND you can make him drink!! (BTW) - I haven't played Find Mii -- will do it this afternoon. Thanks

Wii play has some gems....the shooting game IS Super Duck hunt WII and is very fun!!!!! Laser Hockey is a blast and is fun to just look at. Tanks is a pretty neat game. For those 3 I'd say it's worth it. The nostalgia factor was there for the Shooting game(duck hunt)....was very fun indeed. I'm glad to have it in my collection.
If you don't like Wii Play it's probably because you're way too awesome at it and got all the gold medals far too quickly. Fortunately for you guys it takes a little mental and physical dexterity to be god at Wii Play. You can just waggle and twist to your heart's content to win this one. I kiss the ground RPG fans walk on. Ha ha. the jerk reply was absolutely unnecessary. watch it. -- TBD
I wouldn't say (like others), that Wii Play has any gems in it, but I will say it's worth buying because you get a Wii remote bundled with it and the games in it like that tank one and the Duck Hunt rip-off, are very enjoyable, and really it just depends on your tastes really, I mean come on everyone has different tastes lol.

@Luigi-la-bouncy: Hah, Gold medals. Not seen any Platinum ones yet, noooooob? lol joke
Wii Play is a fun game that does exactly what it sets out to and does it well. It's designed to get people playing together simultaneously after they've finished Wiimote-sharing with Wii Sports. It is, for most people, the second game they are likely to play after Wii Sports and manages to keep the Wii interesting. "Wii doesn't just do Wii Sports," for the more casual gamers. Certainly there's not masses of replay value in it (unless you like getting the Platinum medals, which'll keep you busy for some time), but it's still a good selection of games and fun to break out at parties if the people at the party aren't interested in (or can't play) Brawl or Mario Kart.
